I was a naysayer in the lead up to this movie... and it turns out my suspicions were right. On the very same year that Illumination Entertainment had their biggest returns in the form of the Super Mario Bros Movie, THIS thing came out. Migration. A movie about... birds? In New York? Awkwafina's there. Like, bird movies are often an underdog, audiences just don't flock to them like they do cats and dogs. Add on to that the dodgy marketing campaign, a release window that clashes with the Christmas season and you get a new record - the worst box office results the studio has ever seen. I think after the enormous success of The Super Mario Bros. Movie, people were just expecting too much. It's honestly a shame that Migration is having such a rough time at the box office. It's actually one of the better movies Illumination has put out. Nothing amazing or groundbreaking, but still a fun, feel good, family road trip movie with some good jokes and good heartwarming moments. I hope Dazz still reviews it when it comes out in the UK.

I quite agree. My brother and I went to see it yesterday for New Years, and we had such a great time laughing. However, it always keeps us suspenseful with what is going to happen next. Also, I think they could've pushed the lesson of the movie a little deeper than it did. Overall, a good family movie, but could have been a little better.

I don't wish for the failure of Migration nor do I care about people liking or disliking it, but I honestly just wish Illumination gave more respect to the people who consume their products. You don't have to make a groundbreaking story or the next Into The Spiderverse, but at least TRY with your writing. Like, companies who are make MILLIONS and BILLIONS of dollars SHOULD be getting pressured into making something that at the very least is satisfactory, and I feel Illumination just kinda gets away with doing almost nothing writing wise. And it's not like I wanna hate them, but they're so clearly out to solely make money without any impact to people who love animation and it does kinda bother me tbh.

Disney is clearly the one that IS NOT trying at all. Also, Dreamworks did way worse with Ruby Gillman and I guess Trolls 3 as well. Illumination is actually the best animated studio right now. If you aren’t satisfied with the quality of animated movies coming out in recent times, then it’s time to make your own with ai animation. That’s what we should’ve been doing from the very start. Making our very own badass movies ourselves.

Elemental wasn't incredible, it just was better than StrangeWorld. Plus, it's also Disney so people know it'll be popular and they can easily find it online when they release it on Disneyplus. Migration on the other hand, it'll take longer for it to get released on digital and people don't have as much hype for Illumination as they do for Disney

It's so sad that this movie is doing this bad at the box office. I've seen it and BELIEVE ME, this is one of the best movies of the studio! It has great humor, fun plot, amazing soundtrack by John Powell, STUNNING ANIMATION and it actually FEELS LIKE A MOVIE instead of something you can make merchandise out. And the Vector short film at the beginning was just PEAK. Truely an underrated gem. 😥😓

A bunch of people told me they couldn't escape the marketing for this movie, and I had the same experience. Billboards, signs, and trailers everywhere. At least in America, in the two states I've been in recently, the marketing team went all out to the point that it was annoying. I was still going to see it though.

I really recommend Paw Patrol Mighty Movie if you actually want to see fun family friendly entertainment that actually feels believable instead of this ADHD fooling around with exaggerated expressions and out of character things for the sake of jokes.

Americans just can't write family animated movies. They try too hard to be funny and exaggerated. And the emotional moments don't feel genuine. Compare this movie to Paw Patrol Mighty Movie which actually feels genuine and fun family movie that makes you actually root for the characters to succeed.

Exactly! The humor was on point, even the survivor song in the salsa dance scene. Also, since you mentioned Gwen I'd like to say that for once, the baby was my favorite character. I thought at first that they were going to make her just the "cute sassy baby sidekick" character, but then she won me over at the end! Also, I love the character designs! And yeah I agree, they acted like an actul family but I especially love how Pam, the mom, was the most optimistic. I love it when they portray mothers as the "peace makers' of the family!

That's the problem. It's just a solid generic exaggerated ADHD jokes having movie. If you want to see something more grounded and genuine, watch Paw Patrol Mighty Movie. It's a really good movie that makes you want to root for the main character.

I had very little expectations for this movie when I saw this with my mom, but honestly, there is something about this movie that makes it pretty solid to watch ESPECIALLY the flying scenes and ofc the animation is very pretty. I recommend for anyone to watch this if they r looking for a nice cute film on ducks migrating.

I think it's premature to say this film is a flop. By the 2.5 multiplier, it needs $180M and has already made over $100M with more release dates still under its belt. Yes, it will underperform by Illumination movie standards since none of its films have made under $400M total since 2012's The Lorax. Migration was only recently released; give it time before calling it a flop.

The movie didn't flop. it grossed over 105.9 million dollars against a 72 million dollar budget. It returned at number 2 in its second weekend. I was going to expect it being the lowest grossing film the company made because of its original idea but that still doesn't mean it didn't succeed. Its actually doing really good at the box office right now. Edit: Now the movie has made over 117.3 million dollars at the box office it's doing even better than what you think.

"Im glad to be right" is kinda a nasty thing to say about a pretty harmless and good little film, especially from someone who hasn't even seen the damn thing. Shouldn't we be all for new characters and stories and their success rather than pre-existing mega IPs (as much as I loved the Mario Movie). The Illumination hate is so lame at this point and seems to be the entire backbone of your channel.

Went to see it based off; Family Friendly Fun (no agenda!) We love Illuminations and this did not disappoint. No agenda, nothing weird, just fun family entertainment. Better than the previews we all loved it. Thankful for companies that know sometimes people just want to go to a fun (and funny), feel-good family friendly movie.

Watched a early screening of Migration five days before its release in Australia, and I actually enjoyed it. It’s not a groundbreaking movie, it’s a really fun family adventure with lots humour and heart.

I think this film will probably leg out, given that it had a 34% increase at the US box office from weekend 1 to weekend 2. Family films don’t tend to open huge around Christmas, but they do tend to have massive staying power (look at 2017’s “Jumanji 2” and “The Greatest Showman” for further examples).

I mean I expectrd this to maybe be a modest success, heck there have been a lot of advertisements for it in Denmark where I'm from, but only quite briefly. It is seemingly already forgotten again. And honestly I do think these more traditional cinema release periods like holiday breaks ain't working for the movie theatres and studios anymore. Peoples time and money is tight and especially in these periods people want to spend their time and money on more important things than Movies. If anything they might find more success in the off periods like mid-January, September, or November, where other things aren't happening and people are bored anyway. Those times would be good for making a buzz, because in the traditional periods, people aren't gonna interrupt their other traditions or events for a movie unless it is BIG and notable like the Mario Movie. In the off period, people might be more open to spending some bucks on a trip to the movie theatre in the weekend without interrupting something else. But that of course also depends on peoples personal budgets and across the western world that hasnt been going super well on average.

Honestly, the movie is still good. The visuals are stunning, the characters are likeable and the music is nice. It's a fun time! If I had one complaint, the pacing is a bit too fast. But other than that, if I had to rate the movie, it would be a decent A.

People seem to like the movie though. It's not a very good box office opening, sure, but online reviews dont seem to indicate it's a bad movie. It's like 7/10 on IMD, from over 4K reviews! And from personal experience, I tend to rate 7/10 movies even higher once I've seen them. I hope this movie picks up a bit better. Puss In Boots The Last Wish had similar problems, but once word got around, it really boosted!

To be fair, this is the first real flop Illumination ever had, they kind of perfected the attention grabbing kids flicks that goes in one ear and out the other, but keeps the kids entertained and are utterly harmless. So they have been a money making machine for minimum budget... I am not sure what they were thinking with this movie. Why they thought it would earn money, up until now they have been REALLY good at coming up with attention grabbing concepts kids would want. So yeah... their first real miss fire. That's still fine, just look at Disney that had what? ... Five or six miss fires in a row and is just DROWNING. Illumination is gonna come back full blazing with Despicable me 4 next year, and then Mario Bro's 2.

@@lastmonarchistproduction_253 I think Despicable 4 will earn a ton of money, it's a safe movie for kids where adults feels more comfortable taking the kids, unlike... any Disney movie and most other kids flicks these days. That being said... The economy may just be so horrible bad that people are just penny pinching and can't afford cinema because they can barely afford food. That could happen too.

How did you get to 6 miss fires in a row for Disney in animated movies? Elemental came out this year and did ok. Much better than Migration. Encanto & Luca were the respective most watched movies on any streaming service in 2021 & 2022. They've had like 3 misfires out of their last 10 films.

@@kropianimation1774 Encanto didn't do well in Cinema at all... It was a Pandemic movie, so it has an excuse. But we only got Disney's WORD that it did well on streaming. Luca hasn't even been shown cinema! At all! It is finally GONNA be shown this year, but it didn't have a cinema run originally. Elemental looked like it was gonna flop at first, then BARELY broke even so... great.. The cinema releases have been... Lightyear, Strange World, Raya and the last Dragon... And I had to check Wikipedia just to see what else. Before Raya we had Frozen II, that's how far back we are now. They have not done well.

Kinda sad this movie's been flopping, bc ironically this doesn't feel like your typical silly kids Illumination film. I loved Migration. This movie has heart, it's an innocent and joyful ride with stunning visuals, and the humor actually hits. It's not perfect, but it's a ginormous good step on quality level. I just hope the flop doesn't affect on the studio being afraid of not trying more original ideas like this, bc they actually tried to do a great movie with Migration and they nailed it imo

I swear, advertising in general is very VERY odd. Like you experience a lot of ads for a certain thing, and then others are like "no I haven't heard of it." I dunno how the logistics of that works.

Just want to to point out that this "flop" has been out in the U.S. since December 22nd and has earned $12.6 million and $17 million in its first two weekends. Puss in Boots:The Last Wish made $12.7 million and $16.8 million in it's first two weekends but no one called it a flop.

It's not a flop yet. It had a slow start, but it bounced back in the second weekend, even Puss in Boots 2 had a rough start, we know the rest of the story. Migration cost $72 million, it needs to reach $180 million to make a profit, and it's currently at $105 million, it hasn't even been released in other major territories yet (UK, Japan, Brazil, South Korea ). So everything you say is false. 1) Universal is not going to lose money with this film, 2) because the film is going to make a profit. 3) Judging such a film on its first week is irrelevant. 4) The film received a positive reception from the public, with an audience score of 87% on RT.

Watched it today, i see why people love this now Love it, i gave it an 8/10, and then penguins showed up at the very end, which made me give it a 10/10 just for that. Still an overall 8/10 If you ask "how was mooned?" Not an enjoyable experience since my dad is the biggest despicable me hater your ever run into. Also don't come at me saying "THIS MOVIE SUCKS, ADHD JOKING, UNORIGINAL, GO WATCH THE PAW PATROL MIGHTY MOVIE INSTEAD, YOUR A NOBODY CAUSE YOU RESPECT SOMETHING YOU LOVE" I'm not in for that kind of bull.

i saw a trailer for this in like july last year and thought it was intriguing enough to watch the whole 3 minutes of it despite of it being a youtube ad, but i literally did not know the movie even came out until this video

As much as no one has heard much of it, over in Australia its ads were still showing up for a month now, as I saw much of it when Channel Seven took over partial promotional rights to the film’s premiere on Boxing Day.
