Something interesting to note, they re-adapted the book to fit the modern era. I only found this out after I bought it to read around Halloween last year. Turns out my copy was the 'modern' one. It's really sloppy. Any time a cell phone would come in handy they slap a line in about how 'There's no service' or 'My phone just died'. All the 70's lingo is still present despite the idea being that the plot now occurs in the 2010s. Also, any time the Vietnam war is mentioned, it's just blatantly replaced with 'Iraq'.

I read another book by Lois Duncan for a university class on YA lit, and they did the same thing there. To have them be wearing the same outfit, they could have been on a private school, or a camp, I don't know, some place where they wear uniforms.... or they could just be really close, instead of the completely different personality trope. So many ways they could written it better especially if this was a core mystery for the show to hinge on they should have been thinking about it from very early writing stages and planning other plot elements around it. The "opposite twins" trope is kind of lazily used here too like it would be more interesting to see twins who seem very similar and dress alike and then see throughout the course of the episode their core differences before one of them dies. We get invested as an audience in their individual personalities while being sold on the idea that one twin could be mistaken long term for the other.

The moment you said that the tv series had them kill a person in their friend group I audibly yelled 'What?!' because the point is that they are awful, but irresponsible teens who don't understand the seriousness of their actions (its easier for them to not get caught). They're prime suspects if its their friend. And I am very tired of writers writing unexpected twists. Even the basic rules of the genre have that the audience should be able to figure out who the killer is. And I've actually never been impressed by an unexpected killer reveal, the shocking and interesting part is when it adds new meaning to the story. It needs to cement the theme but make the audience realize they misunderstood the theme. Like Fight Club you think is about 2 guys but turns out it was just one guy, everything you thought the story about was wrong but it also told you sincr the beginning. Se7en, what's in the box isn't important, its who the Wrath sin is. Prisoners was completely character driven whoever the killer was didn't really matter because the damage had been done. Zodiac and Memories of Murder don't even have a killer reveal because murder mysteries are not actually good because of 'who dun it' but because they still follow good writing structure and you don't need to be surprised by who the killer is to have impact.

I have some suggestions for improving this show. 1. It’s a Halloween party and the party twin bullied her sister into matching costumes. All night, people are confusing them for each other which gives believability to why no one would know which twin they killed. Also set up mutual animosity between the two. 2. Friend group used to like both twins but it’s implied they now hate the one twin for a good reason which is revealed throughout the show. 3. Keep it ambiguous which twin died and whether or not hitting the dead twin was an accident. Is the alive twin who she says she is? Or is she pretending to be her sister?

This might just because I have a love of 90s fashion, but the costuming in the movie is miles better than the TV show. You’re right, the tv show’s costuming tells us absolutely nothing, to me it looks totally bland and uninteresting and like someone found a random Pinterest board from 2019 and used that as the entire moodboard for the show’s outfits. At least the movie’s clothes look good and feel like they add something.

So I went to a school where a handful of students were dealers, and they drank and partied etc. There were at least two teacher-student relationships that happened, one of which was an open secret. At first, I thought Lennon tricked Dylan into sleeping with her by pretending to be Allison. That would’ve actually made sense considering through flashbacks we see Dylan was reluctant to do anything with Riley, “saving himself for Allison” as Riley put it, and that kind of deception would have been a good reason to hold a grudge against Lennon. But the people behind this show have something against good writing.

That the murderer telling her instagram followers how she killed someone’s is interesting and shocking. The tiktok dances are just omg. Influencer characters in general are just ugh. I get it’s a remake of an adaptation and they wanna modernize it I don’t know why that just means throwing in a influencer. the show started out really good…i like the idea of a bunch of the characters (twins who are very different like that, but whose style isn’t super different coz they live on an island and just where shorts)…Dylan is the bare bones of an interesting character like he’s got OCD and his best friend is a drug dealer and whatever. Margot is the best character probably even though I hate what happens with her character (but it’s Alison who makes the ending so unbelievable). The whole mom stuff was a lot more important than it should have been, and the dynamic of their mother killing herself is way more interesting. I don’t think Lennon and Alison are supposed to act that similar at all but the actor makes Alison (acting like Lennon) just act like herself most of the time but it should have been a giveaway to everyone around her, especially her homies who have no idea she’s actually Alison.

I was holding out hope that the writers had at least one braincell to spare and made Allison the killer, but they didn't. Disappointed would be an understatement when I say that it was Margot. I still hate Dylan. His performance was so bad it was memorable. I still wished he had died but if they got a season 2 (god pls no) he'd be the killer for sure

To be fair, I have not actually seen this show but, if Margot is the killer, why would she go after everyone else and then let Allison live at the end while they just both keep each other's secret? Like, Allison was the only one of the friend group that knew it was Lennon who died so, even though it's obviously still character ruining-ly horrible and callous for them to cover up the hit and run and hide her body, it seems weird Margot wouldn't have just immediately been like "Hey, that's actually Lennon everyone!" or at least that the majority of her revenge should have been aimed toward Allison since no one else was purposefully covering *Lennon's* death. I agree that it would make much more sense/be much more interesting for Allison to be the killer since even the people she thought she had some amount of connection with were willing to toss her in a cave when it came down to it. The twins' dad or a not-actually-dead Lennon could have also worked, or even if they didn't reveal it was actually Allison that lived until the end and it was someone trying to avenge her for the way she was always treated as less important than Lennon and THEN it got revealed that she had been Allison the whole time, that could have added some more intrigue. It just seems like it was one of those "Yeah, we didn't see it coming but it's not because it was clever, it was because it literally makes no sense" kind of situations.

The problem with relying so heavily on TikTok as a motif is how poorly and quickly this will age years later. And I'm tired of shows not treating teens like actual teens - like yeah, they go through stuff and have issues, but not everything is gossip girl or PLL - more writers need to take a note out of Degrassi's book, there's a reason why that franchise has survived multiple decades and stayed relevant with audiences.

All of it feels so extra. Why couldn't they just do a more faithful adaptation of the book. It's different enough from the 1997 movie that it wouldn't feel like a standard shot for shot remake. It's so simplistic and more a thriller than straight up horror. Something in the vein of the Killing Mr. Griffin adaptation for lifetime.

Texas Chainsaw Massacre New Generation is one of the greatest postmodernist films ever created ( am not joking) - it is super meta - it literally has a film director appear at the end of the film, it satirizes the role of the villain (with sissification of Leatherface) and has apex Twin Peaks vibes. Strong rec. I really hope it appears on Criterion one day.

this is completely unrelated from this amazing video but my adhd sent me down at a rabbit hole at 21:02 lol i couldn't read the label of the ice cream but the packaging brought me so much nostalgia so i spent like an hour desperately googling 'green ice cream packaging with flower' in different variations to no avail haha eventually i rewatched and made out 'lani' and i found roselani ice cream! i grew up in hawaii but was poor so i'd always stare at this brand in the ice cream isle and just dream of one day trying it, the packaging is so cute and the flavors look so good! (i guess its in some parts of cali now, where i'm sure this mess of a show was filmed) anyways now i feel like the *only* good moment of the show--where the dad recognizes the twin who didnt take the SATs, (also omg mood i had such bad test anxiety i also skipped mine lol)--is made just a little better for me personally now because now theres also visual symbolization of what a good parent would do (or buy) for me.

16:30 I actually think the mystery would’ve worked if the costumer’s gave them really different outfits. Unless one of their styles has a really flashy difference (like one only wears designer brands with the logo plastered on it or holographic fabric) I think it’s pretty easy to forget what a person is wearing even if they’re very fashionable. Especially in a moment of panic like hitting someone with a vehicle. Like I’m aware that the girls in my class have a pattern of wearing specific things, but if you told me to describe what they were wearing yesterday I probably couldn’t remember. Even if you go ignore my point about flashiness and have one of their styles be very distinct then force them to swap clothes after the accident, 16:30 I actually think the mystery would’ve worked if the costumer’s gave them really different outfits. Thank you!!! I needed this more than you know 😂 Love your ideas on how it could have been improved, like the pool scene, and Allison being the killer because of how they treated her (in life and "death"). I wish Allison had been in love with Margot from the beginning, and hadn't had a crush on Dylan at all, with Margot still being in love with Lennon (and later Allison). Even if they went with the official ending, Margot could have set out with the intention to frame Dylan, and kill Lennon for betraying/abandoning her. It would have fit better with the only scene I liked (despite being terrible for the plot): when Margot gives her speech in the ambulance. The whole show was mind-numbingly boring but "I don't care what your name is - I have never loved anyone more in my life," gave me chills.

I watched it years ago when it was on Netflix and it always stuck with me and it’s one of my favorite films. The brother’s song from the movie is one of my most played in Spotify too. All around love the film and Justin Chon’s work in general!
