Be aware if the lock is too old and it has too many pens inside the force you have to put on the paperclip gets bigger than what it can withstand and it bends. In that case you should take those kind of of lock picks as shown at first.

Be careful everyone. You can seize up the core by picking most front door locks in Europe if you don't know what you are doing, and this makes getting into it a whole lot harder if not impossible without breaking the door or the frame.

As someone who had learned to pick locks, here's some suggestions I have if you want to: -Paperclips are a bad option. My first tools were 2 paper clips and while I could open some locks, it was extremely ineffective. Get real tools if you want to start picking. -Learn how the lock mechanism works. It's easier to know how to pick a lock if you know what you're dealing with. Search up some diagrams and explanations of lockpicking. -It's pretty easy to learn. Once I had my real tools, I was able to learn quickly. On an easy, transparent lock, I first got it in 2 minutes. After a few days I could unlock it in under a minute, and more difficult locks in under 3. After about 2 weeks I could unlock the transparent lock in about 10 seconds, and more difficult locks in under 30 seconds. Knowing to pick locks is a useful skill that can help if you or a friend gets locked out of somewhere. You will probably get some weird looks, though.

Along with paperclips bobby pins can be used. Also most locks are susceptible to low skill attacks such as bumping and don't even require picking in the first place. You can order a decent set of picks for around 45$ dollars and bypass 90% of the locks you come across with about 6 of the tools in the set. Low skill attacks aside from bumping (literally hitting the lock with a hammer whilst attempting to rotate it) include raking with a comb pick or shims which typically take a matter of seconds.

When I locked myself out, the locksmith just used a hard plastic sheet to put between the gap in the door behind the lock. You still have to know what you're doing but still scarily simple.
