Worked as a pro mechanic for a team with challenge tyres and you always wanna work down towards the valve!!! This allows you to push the tyre into the centre of the rim trough all the way round, and the difference is phenomenal. I end up putting them on by hand no stress 😎

Yes! Challenge tires are great tires, and can (!!!) be put on without tire levers, using the above method. Also, once they are on (1 ride), they stretch and are easy to change.

i have heard 50/50 on this but i am going to give this a try, I was taught young by mechanics before me and they all told me away from the valve because you have less material at the end and can work better to secure it, but they could be wrong and I might be working against myself all this time I will try next challenge tire your way :) thanks for the tip

Always towards the valve. It gives more slack in the bead and, if you're using tubes, the valve holds the tube in place so you don't pinch it when Getty Ng the tyre on l.

Was on a group ride a few weeks ago. Guy was trying to get a tire back on for several minutes (Conti GP5000 onto a Roval CLX rim) and was working towards the valve. Couldn't get that last few cm. I finally grabbed it, pulled it off, and started at the valve, like I always do. Went on in about 10 seconds. I've only tried doing it towards the valve once and couldn't get the tire seated at the valve - been going the other way ever since and never had an issue...

Nicely done. I was used with my Vittoria Mezcal on MTB wheels and they were super easy, but then I got a road bike with a Continental Ultra Sport 3 that was a nightmare, I even broke a tire lever when I was changing the regular tube for a TPU tube, but after a long battle I did it. By the way, have you tried the 'new' Ride Now ultralight tubes? They weight only 19g and I believe they're even cheaper

Suggestion, I had the same problem, You had the tire on the rim with a TBLS, stem installed. What I did was to inflate the tire to seat the beads, Then deflate the tire, remove the valve, and remove the tire on just one side. With the bead seated on the other side , it gives you more room in the wheel drop center to make it easier to install the tube and bead, Also I finished at the stem, to to give more room for the bead to drop all the way to the center , also the valve is plastic, it can break or deform. Worked for me.

i dont use my thumbs when putting on tyres, i use edge of my palms near my wrists to push. it takes getting used to but you can put out more force and less chance of getting painful blisters than using thumbs. that did look super tight though.

5 hours the other day spent trying to get hydraulic fluid bled through the hood and wouldn’t work. Disassembled each piece of the system to see where the blockage was. Turned out the older version of the red colored sram olives are a different size than the newer ones. Refused to give in and stubborn but that’s one more maintenance skill now I can say I’m comfortable with doing.

Hey Daddy, use some Pedros tire levers or Cushcore tire levers. Pedros also has a fantastic tire lever made for getting unlimited leverage. Also and finally, cushcore has the Bead Bro that acts like a third hand and physically holds the tire so easily. Just a few tips. I installed last week 2 Challenge Strada Bianca H TLR 36mm on Roval Terra C wheels with TPU inner tubes. I followed the challenge instruction video. 15-20 mins per wheel and ready. As I am a totaI noob on tyre fitting (really!!!) and scared to damage the TPU inner tube on my first attempts, I used first a butyl inner tube to seat the tyre a first time on the rim and check. Then unseated one side and swapped the butyl for the TPU. Needed only 1 tyre lever!

Yo GC, an old Italian bike mechanic in Taormina (Sicily), showed me his way of working with Challenge tires. Basically, he stretched the tires before mounting them with moderate force ... similar to tubulars. He used a screw clamp with a piece of wood and stretched the tire for 2-3 days at indoor temperature. ... shure this wouldn't work in a bike shop but for DIY mechanics pretty usefull.

Wasn’t boring but really does make me wonder why I gave up on tubular tires. When I got a flat with them I could rip off the junker tire, throw on a spare (carried a light weight Tufo track tire for that), throw some Co2 in, and be on my way again in 2-3 minutes. With these modern tubeless tires if you flat you call Uber, like Daddy said.

Did you try the bigger challenge tyres on the gravel elite wheels? It took me 20 minutes to get only 1 side of the tyre on my elite drive wheels. Second part made me chip my rim with the lever.. I couldn't get the tyre inflated once it was on there.. Couldn't get the tyre off my wheel after I gave up on the whole project. Went to my local bikeshop, and they needed 2 men for about 10 minutes to get the tyre off the rim. Lesson learned: spend some more money, and get the Rene herse tyres with actually better rolling resistance if you want to go the wider slick gravel tyre route.

Really entertaining video!! Challenge tires must ride and roll phenomenally. If they rode like every other tire on the market, they would go out of business because no one would buy these tires because of how hard they are to mount on a rim. But I will still stick with 28 mm conti 5000s with latex tubes on elite wheels. Best combo I've ridden ever. But I'm intrigued by Challenge tires. I got mine mounted the other day. What made it go on much easier was using dish soap on the bead of the tire and a coat around the rim. This helped to move the first installed bead over enough in the rim channel to get the second bead into the rim channel. I also used the Ride Now TPU tubes. I was one of those that commented on your earlier video saying it took me almost an hour to get the first tire mounted, my hands were so sore I had to wait until the next day to do the other wheel. After I thought about the soap trick the second tire mounted up in just a few minutes.

Yes, they are definitely the most difficult tires to install. Still, there is a way to install them withOUT a tire lever. I have done it several times on Farsports Hypers and DT Swiss ERC 1400 wheels. All you need is a bit of thick soapy water on the rim at the last final part of the tire to make it slip in the rim. And "pinch" them a bit differently to help the bids come in the center rim channel. BR, George.

Daddy few questions since you are the daddy. 1.I’m in Chicago windy and flats would you recommend Hyper R67 or R45? 2. I have 2015 tarmac Sworks their proprietary crank. I replaced the BB30 bearings with generic $65 wheels Manufacturing. However, I am not sure if those bearings are not good, but I don’t think that the crank rotates as easy as it shows. What do you think and what bearings will you recommend? Do you think that my current crank system is stiff enough, or should I switch the crack with Shimano dura-ace and press-for bottom bracket? Thank you daddy 😊
@GCPerformance18
@GCPerformance18 9 ай бұрын
so Chicago I would say is very similar to where i am, over 40 miles of riding we get like 220 feet of elevation so I always go d67 wheels, and we are right on the east coast so I am riding on the beach so all we get is wind non stop, I have no issue with the d67 in crosswinds, I just know if it is windy out just ot be mindful of it. but I think you would benefit from d67 the most for the flats..... and second I know those cranks very well, if you can I would recommend going to a bb30 to shimano spindle and get a shimano crank... a solid sleeve bb machined out of alloy will give you more stiffness and more support, but this is only if you have the free cash to do so, if not then get the bb30 bearings from ceramicspeed if you want the best least resistance.... but i have installed wheels manufacture and they work very well, just check crank install because I know sometimes with that lock nut on the non drive side if it is not done correctly it can cause drag

I mounted a new pair of 40mm on dt swiss gr 1600 wheels. Yes, they are tight but using the right technique I didnt really struggle that much. Start opposite the valve and put one bead over the rim working towards the valve, push and stretch down. Do the same for the other bead until its too tight to push any further. Go back to the side opposite the valve, hold and squeeze the tire between your fingers, wiggle it to move the beads more the center of the rim and work your way around the rim towards the valve. You should be able to get more of the tire on the rim - repeat until you have about 6-8 inches left to get on, use plastic tire levers to pop it on. For tubeless, spray a good amount of soapy water between the beads and the rim (spraying the outside wont do it) - i just use a simple window cleaner bottle filled with water with a bit of dishwashing detergent. Start pumping and keep pumping, the tire will start to seat.

The best tire irons I've found so far were the Lezyne Power XL levers, super strong levers. I broke 2 steel core levers and a Pedros lever trying to put Schwalbe Amotion tires on a bike, and then almost broke my VAR tire lever. So I put the project aside and ordered a pair of Power Lever XLs and a Kool Stop Tire Bead Jack. Once those came in the mail I then used 2 reusable zip ties, and soapy water. So as I was put on the bead on one end the other end would come out, so I used the zip ties to hold the bead against the rim on one side so I could work on the other. Once I got to the point where the Power Levers were simply not going to work due to there being no space to lift the bead up and away from the rim and up and over the rim edge I switched to the Kool Stop, that thing slid the bead along the side of the rim and into the rim. That tire literally made a loud snapping noise when it went in. I did all the stuff you did too, making sure the bead was in the center of the rim, etc. I know you're laughing and probably thinking you could have done it without tools, you probably could have, but I'm 70 years old with arthritis in my hands and thumbs, and they were aching like crazy doing that, so tools help me out a lot these days.

I tried installing those white wall R tires on my PCW 4550s.. they were impossible to get on. So I had to take them to my local shop. Nick said they were the hardest tire he’s ever installed. And he hopes that I never get a flat tire bcus I’d definitely be calling an Uber. Mine are tubeless setup. They leak sealant through the sidewalls. And if I don’t inflate them every 2 days they go flat. I’ll never buy another set of Challenge tires again.

yes they are for sure the hardest tires to install, once installed though they are easier to remove for flats its just the first initial put on..... as for the tubelss install, I have not had issues like that, maybe its just a one off, but i do not know

I was thinking the same. The front will hold air for a week.. the rear 2 days if I’m lucky. But I can say I don’t have any problems while riding. Just when they sit.

it's easy, after about 3 hours of my first installing these tires I found a trick. Just push the all the bead into the groove in the middle of the Rim bed. This works on all tubeless tires. But as for Challenge the tire tread folds into the rim so that's impossible to push the tire bead into the groove. I just squeeze the tire tread up, away from the rim bed, and leave enough space to push the tire tread into the tubeless groove of the rim bed. It works well. I have installed challenge tires with this trick many times. U Guys should know why there is a groove in the middle of the rim bed.

Yup. I run Challenge handmade tubeless road and cross tires on Bontrager Aeolus Elite 35 wheels and mounting new tires first time is a brute, but I've figured it out. I use multiple flat screw drivers with cotton padding to protect rim. And water mixed with dish soap to lubricate the rim/tire. I think my tubeless tire/rim combination is worse than yours too. They are handmade in Thailand not Italy.

Wow! I made a mistake buying the Challenge Getaway 40 mm wide foldable model together with TPU tubes as an upgrade to my gravel bike. I have aluminium rims 19 mm wide that came with the bike. They are not tubeless-ready, hence I wanted to ride the new tyres on TPUs. Oh my God - I wasn't even able to fit the tyre alone, not to mention put the tube in. I admit - I gave up. I installed just TPUs with my old tyres. ☹

@@GCPerformance18 I don't deny their performance - I bought them due to the good balance between the tread pattern I was looking for and low rolling resistance in independent tests. The tight-fitting probably makes them better sealed on the rim, even without sealant, when running tubeless. But... I knew tubeless tyres could be generally run with tubes, hence my idea. This doesn't apply to these tyres, though - not out of the box, and not on cheap narrow rims that are not tubeless-ready. As you've shown, installing the tube is possible for an experienced pro, but I guess for normal mortals this becomes possible after riding tubeless for some time - after the tyre stretches a little bit. These tyres (with tubes) would be also very problematic with punctures in the field. And I'm not so much about speed but more about efficiency. I ride casually for fun - I'm not racing. I guess I'll keep them - perhaps at some point I will change the wheels too, and then maybe I'll switch to tubeless.

A little trick I do to get a super tight tire on my wheels is to use a little soapy water on the remaining 6-8 inches of tire. Once it starts to go it slides right in place.

Yes, folding tires use a softer mixed synthetic bead that has a little more flex so it can be folded compared to tires that can't be folded that use metal wire beads. Not all, but most non folding tires use metal beads because it's cheaper. Folding tires therefore will have slightly more stretch available than metal bead tires.
