In today's LEGO city update, I continue moving our downtown core in order to better accommodate town hall and the central park. I also decided to move the beach back, which will give us much more room for the ocean.

I think the most important thing to understand is that you don't NEED to fill every space. leave some open for new builds/releases, new ideas, expansion. Utilize city vehicles to tell a story of expansion, overgrown lots where a building was torn down, etc. it doesn't have to be perfect.

I would remove the train and road in the front. You wouldn't want that to obstruct the nice waterfront view from the buildings. So the road and train should run on the backside of those buildings, cutting through the city and over the canal. It would also make a little room for a nice waterfront area, so cafe's etc. can have some good outdoor serving area, and a few small stands (newspaper, hotdogs, etc.) can be located there.

I think that makes a lot of sense, but there is also something very charming about a railway line right next to the sea. A lot of the south Devon coastline in England has the railway line right by the beach or even over the sea itself, check Starcross and Dawlish stations for some examples, it can look really great. Although the railway lines being installed did affect local fishing communities a lot back in the day, they can still look nice as part of a coastal environment.

That little space next to the construction site - You should put the Up house there. Currently you have it in the Residential Area, but in the movie, Carl’s house is in the middle of a huge construction area in the middle of a big city, so it actually makes more sense to have it in the city next to the construction site.

Friendly suggestion. I have never seen a boardwalk with a road or train track between it and the buildings. You could move the road and tracks behind that first row of buildings and have a train station . In front of buildings, have a wider walkway with a bridge for the cannel. I imagine lost of story happing there with ice cream cart, flower cart, your imagination could go wild. Love your work. My grandson and I watch you every day. Thanks for what you do.

Agree with this. Boardwalks are usually pedestrian only, sometimes allowing bicycles. A train next to it disrupts the scene. Have it run one block further back.

Use Duplo bricks to gain elevation. A Duplo brick can be connected to base plates or normal plates and on top a 2x4 standard brick can be connected to a Duplo brick. Duplo are cheaper than using standard bricks. If you use used bricks it is even cheaper and you won't see them.

Hey Bricksie, here's a few thoughts specific to realism and maximizing space: 1. I would 1000% elevate your city as you don't want the canal to be at level with the city, especially once you add boats, water tiles, etc. Raising it up only a couple of bricks is all you'd need for realism, like Venice! 2. One thing you see in the States alot with roads in the city is that they are one way. You could make an eastbound single lane road on one side of central park and westbound on the other, this would give you more sidewalk space and city space in general. 3. Think about how a city forms, everything of importance should be near town square, because historically your city would have "started" there. Fire department, police, library, etc. Not right next to but within proximity. Then build out from there with the modular. For example in New York, Midtown grew as big as it did because people capitalized on the space outside of the main portion of the city at the time which was downtown. No matter what you do it'll be awesome and breathtaking to look at, do you and hope all the best!

In most places the University is not right in the city but out a bit where they have room for gardens and sports fields. I would love to see the Uni moved maybe to other side of mountain range to be where the greenery is and have nice gardens and a pond and a sports field with people playing some match. Can have it near a train station for commute and maybe build some other buildings of similar style on grounds. Also, i hope you plan to build a ice hockey stadium (or at least the court) by the winter section (maybe with 1 team colored to match the Oilers). :)

I LOVE the idea of having the Town Hall behind Central Park. It would make a really cool sight line if you elevated the Town Hall maybe 5 or 6 bricks higher with a wraparound staircase leading up to it. Could then put the Bricklink Construction Site behind it to make the rear less awkward for bring so tall.

Thinner, one-way streets on either side of Central Park and Town Hall? Would better fit a “historic district” and give you more space for sidewalks and working with the canal.

Instead of focusing on every block just get going on one block until it’s perfect. eventually you will have a block or two that you aren’t super proud of but you could aways just make more custom modular buildings. So in a nutshell just put 100% of your attention on one block because you can aways expand.

How about changing your double roads around Central Park to one way streets around the City hall / Central park area? That way, you could use half a baseplate for sidewalks / streets and you would win back half a baseplate for other ideas. And I think it will make that part of your city less car centric. whatever you will make out of it, it will be awesome. Keep it up! 😀 I love your work Jordan. A wise man once said.." Work smarter. Not harder, " 😉 definitely use wood for the elevated sections. A nice lego finishing is all that's required. Even source out duplo for fast mountain building 👌 Have trains passing under and do a few caves with stories and Easter eggs that don't necessarily have to fit the theme of the city... Just some thoughts from a simple man. Hope this helps! 😁 Such a fun project! I'm loving the new city and the unlimited potential! Enjoy the process, my friend!! ❤

For the elevation, save on the lego and just get pieces of plywood/mdf/melamine (whichever is cheaper) and cut some to the size of a baseplate and others smaller by one brick on all sides. Makes it very easy to move around and you can use the smaller ones for where you would have an exposed elevation that can be covered by brickwork. Saves the lego pieces for above ground.

City Hall behind the Central Park looks phenomenal! I also love the idea of the central canal with buildings on either side! Moving the beach back a bit really adds dimension to the waterfront. I live in Savannah Georgia and we have a river running along our downtown historical district and it's lined with very old historical buildings and your city reminds me of Savannah in that regard. I think there should be a train station between the beach and the zoo to allow towns people to access both attractions. Would you consider moving the bowling alley and maybe the cinema near the beach? I think an entertainment district would be a fun destination. Just a thought lol I know we all live vicariously through your city and dream of what we would do if in your shoes. What you're doing is awesome and I hate when you get negative comments. I may not agree at first with all of your ideas but then in the end I'm amazed at how well it turns out lol. Keep up the great work, keep your head up, thank you for allowing us into your world and letting us enjoy the adventure!!!

Hey Bricksie, just a few suggestions. Police station and fire brigade beside each other. University asks for a parking lot and a green space. Hospital should go to the edge of town due to city noise, construction site could go in the residential area together with the up house. Downtown core is already packed up and fully built, no need for construction site. Jazz club beside the cinema, hotel by the canal. Hospital also needs a parking lot and a huge green space. Corner garage could go between the town center and the residential area due to the noise from the garage. Add greenery wherever you can. I'm sorry for a lengthy list, but it just makes sense more this way. Also, the lighthouse could occupy the deepest part of the sea/ocean.

You should have the building with the bridge go over the canal. Also when you do the mountain range in the middle you should intergrate the mountain view observatory on top and join the ski slopes to the mountain range to the back and have a tall peak as a focus point of the city. Also include a road that goes of the table to make it seem as though the city continues off the table.

I still think you should reduce the size of some or all of your double modular buildings. Like the jazz club doesn't need to be doubled, jazz clubs are just tiny in general 99% of the time. Your space issues now, as well as space issues you will have in the future as you run out of table space, will be greatly reduced by simply having fewer doubled buildings.

A suggestion about the elevation I would suggest that a small part of higher elevation would break through the raised platform slowly declining towards the raised platform. The modules by the beach look fine. However, push all of them back so the half base plat is now in front this prevents the back of the modulars from being visible, allowing parking, local street cars, and wherever you want. The rest of the city looks great, and I'm excited for the mountains.

What might help is maybe breaking down the area into smaller grids and having a “center piece” in each area to help bring your vision to fruition. For instance, look at the smaller area and see what building you want there and what you think fits next to it. Then with those small pieces , expand out and see what pieces fit next to eachother and keep expanding out from there.

Bricksie, if you turn the 2.5 baseplates to 2, then that means you can move that road by 0.5 baseplate and thus create a very long train station. One that could potentially, fit a whole train. If you can raise both the road bridge and the tracks (station), you could make the station part of the railbridge as well and make it a really big station. Say, do you need to move your lighthouse a bit more towards the table edge? Lets say, one baseplate forwards and to the left? That might work better, I think. And combined with the raising railway line (for that bridge), the boardwalk it's double high Mils plate, would then make more sense as well. The re-doing modular Mils plating to higher heights... Simple, Mill plating with a baseplate made from plates, then use flat tiles on top. There, a simple raising mill plate. By replacing the baseplate with plates, you account for the modulars their baseplate, making things easier for yourself. The question you might want to ask yourself, then, is this one, do you stay pure Lego or go for a baseplate sized plate of some other company? As for that double station, can you copy it? Say two or three times? It needs some room for trains to load & unload their passengers. Now as for your Amusement park haunted house (L shape villa) with it's open back......, what if you filled it up with your Disney Train Station? It has the same style and would let you go with it being the official entree trainstation on the other side of the park, for those that don't want to walk that far. I understand you want a railyard, yet you also want a harbour, do you think you can combine them? Sure, you might have to be able to let trains go both left & right, but... And do consider your future mountain, could contain a nice shadow station, there, train storage, solved. Remember your standing holes, who says you can't make a standing hole in the middle of a mountain??? Duplo is your friend, here. Strong support pillars, big & strong connection plates & more. And by mils plating it over, you get your normal lego studs, back. It doesn't matter if they are second hand, either, as long as you can still use them as support structures. Hey, does that then mean, you would then have some bins, your kids could then play with? lol Anyway, happy building Bricksie, you're getting there, one step at the time.

I feel putting modulars along the canal is a waste as those buildings are premium and deserve to be on a road where they can be seen and enjoyed. The Venice Canals seem more fitting for along the canal.

Adding parks sitting areas and little monuments like small pop art things like what a real city have would add some immersion to it to add realism. In the small spaces ! I've been keeping up with that genuinely to see the progress the city is looking great

@bricksie maybe try looking at your city like it evolved there rather than a puzzle. No city was made in a week, the city hall would have been placed YEARS ago because the city wanted to make a statement, later the Central Park was turned from the central market by some Mayor that wanted to leave their stamp. The university probably had a lot more land along the canal but sold a bunch off and now is unfortunately a corner building. I’m sure a reno would have been done to make the existing building a corner, but maybe it’s not perfect but all the local residents love it being across the canal from markets, and the city out in a pedestrian on bridge across to celebrate the area as a historic place in the city. What I’m getting at is, it looks awesome, but if you open up to the organic nature of a city evolving, you can use what you have and add to them to add to their stories. You mention this, but it feels like you are in puzzle mode finding a place for everything rather than creating.

Keep the sky scraper the way it is. It shows how far you’ve come. Put the fire brigade and police station next to each other. Put two business in place of the university and fire brigade.

Amazing job so far, Jordan. If I can make a suggestion, I’d swap the zoo with pop culture street. Thinking from the residential area perspective, I wouldn’t want to be looking at skyscrapers from my house. I would want a little space away from the actual city. Either that or built some tall trees between the city and the residential area.

I love the town hall by Central Park. It was a suggestion I wanted to make in the old layout but didn't realize you read all the comments. I think now that it is a standalone building, as it deserves to be, it makes more sense to swap out the nice MOC buildings to the side for a more thematic extension of the building itself. The MOC wings were great as a row building, but now they just stand out as 8 foot tall random buildings tacked onto the side of a government building, which is a bit odd for real life. For inspiration, perhaps look to Philadelphia's Independence Hall (no need for wings per se, just a couple 8-10 brick extensions that can make the windows wrap around the building. Also, it's definitely something you could come back to when you have time to devote a day or so to modifying a single building. Right now you're just roughing things out. Second, I know you just modified your hospital last year, but now that you've got more space, I feel like it deserves to be bigger but in the same style. 4 floors tall at ~20x20 ft per floor would make for a pretty odd building in real life. I wonder if that could be something you could use to solve the problem of the canal terminating road. Expand it into more of that space, give it some room to breathe and have a small hallway and rooms, and solve your road problem all at the same time.

Re: Angled roads: I would stick to the square-corner grid myself, at least in the downtown. I think you're making the right call keeping the odd angles to the countryside area. I'd love to see the roads lined up on either side of the canal (the space visible at 10:10 and other points in the video)... although an angled bridge across the canal would look amazing if you can make it work. I love your ideas for elevation changes. There are so many ways to do it, and it would be fun to use multiple methods depending on the specific elevation change being made. I still have yesterday's video and today's video to watch and comment on, so I'll see how the next couple of days go for you. 🙂

I know your space isn’t unlimited but you could dedicate an entire city block to one building. Like the university could occupy the front corner and then you could landscape around it. Might look nice and free up Modular’s for other city blocks. Coming along really nice. So happy to see the new space come along. 🎉

20:16 just have a small bit of road to accommodate the first building and then the rest of the street is closed to cars, having a pedestrian zone with maybe market stalls or a festival / street party.

If you have little/odd spaces you don't know what to put, think of a restaurant with a outdoor seating area to fill space or an amphitheater for small concerts. Both are a good way to have a lot of minifigs showing.

Hello! First off I just wanted to say I enjoy watching your videos. Your city is great and I love seeing the process you go through with designing it. A suggestion I have for you would be to move the train tracks and road from the front of your city. With the waterfront area you have leading into the canal, it may look nice to have a pedestrian area with the theatre, jazz club, some stores, the Parisian restaurant etc... with a park area along the water. You mentioned doing a walkway along the water, but having the train separating it may look a little weird (and certainly not safe for mini figs to cross 😂). The road with built in tracks could be moved back a block and may help you line up the roads on either side of the canal. Looking forward to your next video.

I’m loving the new space! Congrats! Excellent progress from start to now. Maybe put the older era buildings like the fire brigade near Townhall and Central Park? Two plates and a tile beneath an existing mils plate will raise it one brick, or equal a two brick tall mils plate.

Another great update - it's always cool seeing your creative process in real time! The way you were discussing lines of sight reminded my of 'thebrickinpanda' when he's designing his Lego city. I think it makes sense to focus angled tracks/roads on the 'countryside side'. I wonder whether factoring-in pedestrian/cycle-only bridges might help you to plan around the canal? For instance, with the layout in the video, a pedestrian bridge between the farmer's market and university block could work quite well.

Making the water 2-3 base plates back might be cool. You could have boats/ships in the ocean. And also do a diving underwater mock that you could build under the the table where you where thinking about having the subway

A suggestion, a lighthouse is in place to warn shipping. It needs to be into the sea or on a higher cliff. Maybe move it out to the edge of the boards to break up the linear effect of the waterline or raise it up

I would have a more back story approach to positioning the buildings, the changing over time or architecture, the original part of the city with things like Town Hall, Central Park, the Museum and growing outwards. Move the small petrol station out of the city either to the suburbs or the road to somewhere. There are some modular houses in the city could they all go together along the canal. Also need to plan how people are going to get to the beach, a road? Does the board walk cross the railway line. The parking lot at the beach is a good idea. I'm sure you will sort it out Rome wasn't build in a day.

Have you considered making the road that the corner garage is on a dead end road? The cars can drive out of the right hand side of the garage and turn right. A pedestrian area would/could look pretty good next to the park. You only need one baseplate of road for the cars exiting the garage to enable them to get back out on to the main street. Keep up the awesome work.

Incredible work! I love where it’s going. I’m curious to see how or if you’re going to be able to build sloped roads into the mountains. Suggestion for the short street next to the park. What about a single lane and some angled parking. Just thinking off the fly here. I’m not sure how the outlet would work but one lane plus some parking might look cool. You could create a spit for the lighthouse out into the water.

Maybe the road next to the central park that ends at the canal could just be replaced with a pedestrian-only paved area at the same height as the modular sidewalks? Could do something similar where the roads don't line up either side of the canal at the front too.

Hey Jordan. Re the road next to Central Park that leads to the canal - how about swapping out those Modulars and getting rid of the road. Then replace the Modulars with entertainment/cafe or uni options and have it as a dining/entertainment pedestrian area that leads into Central Park? Just an idea - it’s great to see you working on city again 😊

It would be cool if that access hole was like a lake that was part of the canal. Have a hinge door that you could close up that has Lego water on it. These holes are limiting you on what layout you can have.

I think the Town Hall would look so much better if it was by itself, and not flanked by the neighboring buildings. If you could rebuild the Town Hall so that all 4 sides of it were one style of architecture and it was situated a plot of land by itself, it would look much better. I love the new studio and how its allowed to you expand your love of LEGO.

For creating the inclines, you could make 5 mini platforms capped with studless pieces. That would allow you to create gradual inclines like in a model railroad set, and use minimal pieces.

Turn some of the empty spaces into parking lots. And the space near construction into raw materials for construction, maybe some heavy machinery that also fits that theme. Perhaps near the Train station also a parking lot for bike storage. And as for the roads not lining up at the canal is make a diagonal bridge.

Few things to say: Most important, well wishes for Mrs. Bricksie and a speedy recovery. Second thing congrats on the Oilers making the Stanley Cup Finals (not sure who I really rooting for) sort of want Florida to win, sorry. Third, I know you don't have carvana in Canada, but if you google it you will see what it looks like. It would be really cool to see a Bricksie car dealership like carvana which you could build to speed champion scale and you could host a car dealership in the city. They are basically a sky scraper that has an elevator inside and cars on each level. Last thing, since the city is going to take forever to move things around and get how you want, I miss the wall art, when you going to hang it? Love the progress!

Hey Jordan! I love how it’s turning out. I have a few things that I think would make the area feel more realistic. Try to base the city off of the water rather than the water off of the city. If you want to add some type of lore to the city, it would add more depth if the area closest to the water are necessary structures that have been there since the city was founded. Then from there add your roads that would make sense for the structures. Work your way out from the water. But hey it’s your city, just thought I’d add my thoughts. Keep up the great work! Excited to see how this turns out! Edit: also dead space isn’t always a bad thing!

Love the content on the Lego city more city, previews and reviews. What about shifting the track by the water and downtown a half baseplate into the water and gain the half baseplate you’re trying to allocate. Also, what if you surround the hospital by one half baseplate on each side of the drive through, then the driveway can reach both ends of the block and it becomes 2 baseplates. And lastly what if the canal goes further back towards the residential area and turns into the mountain back there and use the canal as your elevation gain and the bridges that cross it only slope up one side? It’s so nice watching city planning agin.

The new layout is continuously improving. I really like the waterfront perimeter, can't wait to see it detailed. I really hope you keep your grid format, angles may look unique but the grid is so neat and tidy it's visually satisfying. I find there is a sense of peace and tranquility when layouts are neat and tidy.

I never comment on videos but I just wanted to say that this layout is looking great. If I may, I think the university on the canal is great and moving the fire brigade and swapping it with the double book shop makes a lot of sense. The university right next to the book store and close to the hotel just seems right to me. That way students can access the bookstore and say family members visiting students can stay at the hotel

It’s looking awesome Jordan! The university is sort of smaller than the other modules - almost like forced perspective getting smaller with each floor. It would look great on its own on a higher elevation to make that perspective shine, vs getting buried in the downtown IMO. Thanks for the great content!
