Also from a technical point of view as a skater... He has a looooooooooong wiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiide floor to be able to play on, the MGM backlot which they made look like regular streets, and they could've kept them all clean without a SINGLE little stone on the floor, I've had enough experience to know that it only takes one single little stone to completely throw off one's skating game! Plus that space allowed him to build up more momentum and carry him further with each stride movement of the legs, whereas if you tried to perform this act on a stage, you'd be lucky if you could get 8 metres of space free to do that! Conditions had to be as perfect as possible for Kelly to do this number!

@@Ignauhak : You're absolutely correct: a long, wide, SMOOTH, FLAT, PREPARED skating surface, NOT a concrete sidewalk. I had skates like this as a kid, and trust me, you can't go 2 feet in real-world conditions -- Gene Kelly or not. His glide up to the letterbox is slick. Talent, yes -- with a million bucks of hidden production support! Anyone who thinks movies are real is a rube!

This movie had just started when I turned on my TV. Didn’t seem like my kind of flick - I was a 1980s kid - and I planned to switch channels. But I got sucked into the plot and ended up watching, and enjoying, the entire movie, and this scene was a pretty nice payoff for sticking with the flick.

As a tap dancer of almost 9 years, I can tell you how complicated this routine is. The move at 3:41 when Gene Kelly clicks his heels together is one of the most notoriously difficult steps in tap to master. I still cannot do it fully, and to do it twice on one leg like Gene Kelly did is even harder. Absolutely incredible hard work and talent!

Magnificent dancer, amazing skater (it was 1955, they didn't have the techinques or the skates we do now), wonderful singer and great actor. I could go on praising him all day! Well technically, Astaire and Rogers did it in Shall We Dance, years earlier. But this is a lot more elaborate. I like the early portion best, where the character isn't even aware he's on skates. The second segment is more self-conscious, less seemingly effortless. And who doesn't think he's one of the best dancers ever? No dancer I ever met. Not that I can dance worth a lick. My sister studied ballet. She'd talk your ear off, you let her. ;)

Open your own eyes. As Nina Foch told her friends, "Gene Kelly was one of the good guys." There are several videos right here on KZfaq in which some of the biggest names in old Hollywood talk about working with Gene and how they loved him. The group includes Frank Sinatra, Leslie Caron and Cyd Charisse. for my personal opinion, I think we can not compare Fred Astaire and Gene Kelly. They had a different style and an incredible mastery of their art. They both revolutionized dance and musical comedy. Fred Astaire embodies all the elegance of an era. Gene Kelly embodies the freshness of a new genre. Gene is more acrobatic than Fred who is more graceful to him. Personally, I prefer Fred Astaire but it's only a matter of taste. I really love Gene Kelly and just have to see this performance to see that he was an outstanding artist.

He talks of his brother act starting out in local Pittsburgh clubs, and that they cooked up a dance bit on skates using acrobatics. Then he remarks that this later filmed number was easy, since those were simple steps compared with what he'd do with his brother, doing full back flips on skates and a lot more. Which raises the issue....HE COULD TAP DANCE AND DO BACK FLIPS ON ROLLER SKATES!! Never thought I'd watch this number and ever think "Boy, I wish he hadn't held back with what he did here!"

Yes, and he doesn't get enough credit for being a wonderful human, adored by his children and beloved by most of Hollywood. When his wife died in 1973, he turned down all offers of work outside of Hollywood, to raise their two young kids as both father and mother.

Can we take a moment to not only appreciate the beautiful voice but dancing skills of the late great Gene Kelly. This man is an icon he’s one of my all time heroes and I’m so sad that he isn’t alive anymore for me to meet him. I genuinely love him so much. I am only 17 years old but some day I hope that I can aim to be like him. He was truly impressive the fact he tap dances in Roller skates and makes it look like a walk in the park is true talent. He always had a very Radiant smile that made you happy. RIP 🪦 Gene Kelly an iconic legend until the very end love you so much xx

That is true. It made his rapid decline in the Sixties, into a chunky old guy in a toupee, more dispiriting. By the time of 'Xanadu' he was a museum piece. But in the 15 years between 'From Me and My Gal' and 'Les Girls' he seemed timeless.

I know that both Fred Astaire and Donald O'Connor performed dances with roller skates before Gene, but his performance in "I Like Myself" truly stands out to me. Not only does he dance for the whole sequence in unlocked roller skates, but he does so many things; he tap dances, he performs risky jumps and movements, he speeds. He even clicks his heels together. All on roller skates! This is true craftmanship and is an ample example of why Gene Kelly was one of the best dancers of all time.
