On this edition of #thedailydoug, I'm listening to music from The Carpenters for the first time on the channel. Although, I have heard Bless the Beasts and the Children on my Patreon. With mom spending time with us at home...and this song earning high votes in our recent Fan Favorites series, I decided to take Superstar out for a spin. Come along as I share some interesting backstory to the song and enjoy a listen to Superstar with the Carpenters with all of you!

Hey, Donna! So much Carpenters in my life, too, as it happened, on 8-track throughout the 1970's. They came through Kentucky once that I know of, one of the first shows in Rupp Arena in Lexington, promoting the just released "Now and Then" album. And the General Manager was a family friend, so we had tickets and backstage passes! Guess who got strep throat the day before the show? So I never sam them live, either. I feel your pain, girl.

Karen had one of the greatest voices of all time. Not only did she have perfect pitch, she was pitch perfect. She was known as "one take Karen" in the studio because of that. And that was at least 20 years before auto tune would make average singers sound good. Her passing at such a young age from anorexia was truly a tragedy.

Actually Richard says they toured too much which contributed to Karen's illness and demise and Richard's prescription drug addiction. They did overdub all their backing vocals! I was so very fortunate to meet them several times and have some lovely notes from Karen. She had a three octave range, and perfect pitch!

The Carpenters toured excessively in the United States, in Europe and Japan where they were enormously popular. I was lucky enough to see them perform in concert 3 times. Karen possessed an especially warm, natural, resonant alto - that no other female singer has come close to sounding like.

Karen's main vocal is just her, no overdubbing or doubling. The small amount of background vocals in the second verse are both Karen and Richard, doubled. When they were both in college, Karen drummed for, and sang in, the choir. Richard accompanied and did much arranging for the choir. Sound familiar, Doug?

I didn't see it on your Patreon channel, but if you haven't reviewed it yet, I think you would appreciate the song "Hummingbird" by Seals & Crofts, from 1972. Mrs. Doug. I was surprised to hear you say that the Carpenters didn't tour much so you never saw them live. I guess I was more lucky than than I realized at the time because I did get to see them in Abilene, Texas. In fact, the first time I ever heard both Superstar and Rainy Days and Mondays was at this concert. They were performing the songs before the records were released. They were a five piece group, and Karen was on drums. It's been so long ago that I don't remember many of the details, but one I do remember is they flubbed the beginning of their very first song. They stopped, Karen laughed and they started again. There were no other hiccups. I also remember how much they sounded like their record despite being only a five piece band.

Welcome to the channel Doug's mum, I hope this is the first of many more appearances. All I can thank my own mother for is an introduction to Beethoven - I'm speaking musically of course - and some might say that was a gift beyond price. As for this song, something about it doesn't quite work. Karen's voice isn't the problem, she absolutely nails the complex, conflicted protagonist. But I think the arrangement makes her sound too comfortable, it doesn't give her the chance to suggest that although she'll probably grow out of this phase things might take a somewhat darker turn one day...

Very interesting! Your mom's reference to Michael Jackson being a fan of Karen's reminded me of something. In the late 1970's, Karen worked with legendary producer, Phil Ramone recording a solo album. Prolific songwriter Rod Temperton wrote a few songs for that album, of which Karen chose two, "Lovelines" and "When We Try." She turned down a couple of songs that were then offered to Michael Jackson: "Off The Wall" and "Rock With You." Another interesting song had been written for the Carpenters years earlier - but rejected (their mother disapproved of the reference to a sleeping pill and forbid her children to record it). "Last Night I Didn't Get to Sleep at All" then became a top 10 hit for The 5th Dimension.

Hosting your Mom was a lot of fun. Karen Carpenter's smooth and mellow voice was like no other. She died way before her time. The physical and mental stress of being a recording artist would be too much for me. I have read that their mother doted on Richard more than Karen. She must have felt like she never measured up to Richard. How tragic that her life ended like it did.

They very likely just doubled her vocals in the choruses. That's how it was done. It takes no time. On analog tape, shifting one vocal track a few milliseconds wasn't easy like it is now with digital workstations. Again, all they needed to do to get that chorus effect was rewind the tape, patch to a new track on the analog machine, and hit record. Karen would just nail it. There were delay devices that could have achieved that chorus effect, but why bother when you can just have Karen sing it again?
