One thing I never see mentioned in Rage reaction videos: the liner notes of their albums always mention that all sounds on the album were made by guitar, bass, vocals, and drums. They don't sample stuff, use synths, etc. and usually have minimal overdubs. It's all very punk rock - just the band playing the song with an organic live sound.

Now you know! Rage is like foundational to me. One of my most treasured bands. Back when woke used to actually mean something. Please react to all of it. Wake Up, Down Rodeo, Testify, Killing in the Name. Plus they have a few songs with Run the Jewels that are FIRE. JU$T, Close Your Eyes and Count to Fuck, and Zack (the lead singer) has a cameo in the RTJ track Oh La La. Don’t underestimate the impact and influence that RATM had in the 90s, on society and the culture. Commercial success is only numbers. The reason that Kid Rock & Limp Bizkit come to mind is because those guys are massive RATM biters. Without Rage, there is no Limp Bizkit, Korn, Kid Rock, or any of the late 90a/early 2000s rap/metal hybrids. the "pick-ups" are those things between the body & the strings of an electric guitar or bass. oval shaped, size of a thumb, usually with three silver dots. they "pick up" magnetic resonance from the strings & transfer them to the amplifier. the thin vertical protrusions along the neck of the guitar or bass are the "frets", basically little stop signs for the fingers on your non-strumming hand. many jazz bassists play fretless basses, either upright or electric, which completely blows my mind. isn't real music a trip? can't live without it.

I was never dismissive of them, but I couldn't handle lots of their music at once, it came out when I was past the angry music stage, and to the depressing music. But I appreciate the message so much, and I LOVE watching this younger generation discover them. The messages that they are conveying, and the emotion, are definitely things that can and should resonate with the passion the younger millennials and Gen Z are bringing to the table. I feel like music like this can send them all in the right direction, get this country back on track.

So many of the RATM "fans" I knew just liked the "F you, I won't do what you tell me!" vibe of the band, but these guys knew and cared absolutely nothing for the broader social critique or political message. That's what turned me off (what's that line from Sloan? "It's not the band I hate, it's their fans") I didn't feel like hanging out with a bunch of angry dumb suburban dudes.

I saw them a couple shows later, that is the hardest I have ever seen someone go while stuck in a chair. You could see how pissed he was he couldn't bounce around the stage like a madman like he usually does and that fed into his performance. Wild ass show.

Commercial success typically means 'radio success'. Radio success typically means that the music created by the artist has been produced under structure, or formula, that is used to create that 'radio sound'. This leads people to typically say that an artist has 'sold out'.... meaning that their earlier music seemed to be more reflective of who they are as an artist, while their later material, produced by the large record companies for the radio, tends to stick to a certain formula that many commercial songs use. Rage has done their own thing since they came out, and while there is nothing wrong with a band evolving their sound to be more commercial, I really do appreciate when a band sticks to their guns and refuses to alter their vision for radio airplay standards.

They honestly don’t have a bad song. Check out ”Down Rodeo”, “testify”, “Know your Enemy”, “Sleep Now in the Fire”, “Guerrilla Radio”, “Bullet in the Head”, there are so many…

The scratch effect is an interesting one. There's a toggle on the guitar to switch between different pickups and on certain guitars you can control the volume of each pickup so if you have one turned all the way down, you can basically use the toggle as a kill switch the same way that you'd use a crossfader with a really sharp transition on a mixer for scratching.

I used to be a genre snob, then I became an underground junky and liked finding cool new bands that no one heard of because most of my friends knew more about the more popular bands, and I didn't want to feel like I had to "catch up with my friends". Now I say most if not all music is valid in some way, especially if I can't appreciate it. Never stop trying to broaden your appreciation and understanding. It's why I like music reactions videos, seeing someone's eyes light up with a new appreciation of something they didn't know about refreshes me after the dark stuff I have to see and read at my job.

The thing I love about RAGTM and Limp Bizkit is that when everybody hears them for the first time, the beat of their music just takes over the listener’s bodies leaving their heads banging exactly the same way to the beat. Watching the listeners just lose complete control as their head just starts banging in time to the beat brings joy to my soul every time! 🤘😎🤘
