Thanks for covering this! This particular remix of "I'll Face Myself" plays during a special boss battle near the end of the game that does indeed have a cutscene lead-in. This is a tune that means a lot to me and that I love quite dearly, and thank you for taking it on as a project! I really love the original versions of the song, but the extra string notes that get layered onto this version really make it for me. It *is* a very melancholy fight after a very melancholy dungeon. Facing doppelgangers is a major theme throughout the game, though it's not *quite* what happens in this fight. It's related enough though that the theme stays on-brand, and it ties in well to the game's theme.

The original I’ll Face Myself is a great track, but the strings in this version really elevate it over the original and make it a lot more emotional. Especially when the melody of Never More kicks in at the end.

Part of what makes it brilliant is that it's about the tussle inside, back and forth, values, moods, and trying to piece it back together and overcome. Characters do sorta face themself in Persona 4, their Shadow. The part willing to say all the things the real person would never be comfortable with saying, including the meanest and nastiest judgements on people they know around them. It goes well to the point of them uncovering what's truly under these images of these people they put on. The other side fact is, Persona users embrace this other self, awakening their true power. "I am thou, thou art I". Everyone's awakened Persona power manifests as what their new sense of resolve looks like in who they are.

Persona 4 is one of my favourite games, and while this is not my favourite song, it is one of the best to do a breakdown since this song is full juicy stuff to analyse.

Thought I'd share some interesting tidbits about this song, as it's origins and how it's played ingame are pretty interesting. The official title of this song is "I'll Face Myself -Battle- Reincarnation". When Persona 4 was originally released in 2008, it had two similar songs, "I'll Face Myself" and "I'll Face Myself -Battle-". The battle version was the main boss theme of the game, with the normal version being used in cutscenes, typically post-boss ones. The battle version is a high energy rock track while the normal version is a soft piano piece, which is reused in many other songs as the main leitmotif of Persona 4. In 2011, ATLUS released an album containing remixes of popular songs from P4 called Persona 4 Reincarnation. This song is one of the new remixes. It combines the piano and strings of the regular song with the guitar riffs and drums of the battle version. When Persona 4 was rereleased in 2012 for the Vita, this song was used for a newly added battle near the end of the game. This battle has 2 phases, separated by a cutscene. The first phase starts with the piano intro of the song and the intro is timed such that the boss powers up just has the metal riffs kick in. For the first phase, only the first part of the song is used, skipping the violin solo. After the cutscene, the second phase skips the piano intro and starts right with the metal riff. And for this phase, the violin solo is included. The piano outro is skipped in both phases.

Atlas reviewing another one of Atlus's works, how fitting. Anyway, I'd like to thank Elengale for specifically picking THIS version of I'll Face Myself. It's most certainly the best and most hype shadow boss theme in this game. It never fails to give me goosebumps, holy cow. I'd really like to see more of him reviewing Atlus games in the future. Persona 4 may not be my all time favourite MegaTen game however its soundtrack holds a special place in my heart

Insanely good track. It was in my daily playlists for years. I'm an avid persona fan son it was a matter of time I could enjoy this being in your channel! This is the anime version by the way, the original one from the game is full metal. Also there's a special one in game as well which is in retro chiptune style ;)

For the final thought, you're quite spot on. You are literally facing your doppelganger inner demons (well at least others inner demons since the player doesn't have an inner demon to face). Although, in the context of this version of the song, I say it's used for something grander.

Your two guesses for the representation of this song in play are correct. This is the boss theme song and represents facing your worst self literally incarnated in physical form and accepting yourself. Persona is a term from Jung's analytical psychology for a social mask that would be your shadow that is everything negative about you tamed and accept transformed and masked into something positive what you do in the game. This specific version of the song is a variation of the main bosses that are the shadows of the characters but a unique variation of Persona 4 Golden of a secret boss that I suppose is more melancholy because she is in a technically depressed state of denial and self-destruction, both that in the game this is the only boss that denies everything you attack and also damages itself gradually self-destructing.

Firstly, this music only appears in the golden section of persona 4, wich is the "remake" The the end section is a part also present in the game's title screen theme : "corner of memories" and is the main theme of the ending song "never more".

Day 77 of requesting House of Sacred Remains from Castlevania: Lament of Innocence. Beautifully atmospheric track and one of my fave's from video games in general. It'd be awesome to hear what you think of it. It's the theme of a level set starting from a cathedral and ending in the crypts through lots of library areas, it's not a particularly significant or infamous level at all but I think the track really reflects the hallowed grounds housing sacred relics beautifully. The 4 minute upload from the Castlevania Sound Team is the one to listen to.
