Such a great video! I’m going to send over some recipes today that I found to make mahonia syrup to be used in a mocktail called ‘Only the Mahonia’. Might be fun to try when you get a big crop of berries! 🍸 Apparently the syrup is reminiscent of honey...it would be interesting at least!

I adore your sense of humor. The hat! the shirt! The sticker! I'm dead. I seem to have an affinity for lesser known plants, I stumble across them online all the time and then spend far too much time and money sourcing them. The last one was cherry fluff echinacea, which I finally tracked down as bare roots...they never grew. Sigh.

Hahaha..ok, Laura Ingram. Garden Answer. I moved into my house 3 years ago to an already started garden. One plant I couldn't identify, turned out was a Mahonia. It is probably one of my most interesting plants. It's pretty big about 4feet wide and more than 5 feet tall. It is still growing. Every season it has a special interest. My leaves are big and shiny. Multiple colors green, red and yellow. Flowers turn into a group of purple berries and feed the birds all winter. I should keep a diary of pictures each season. I hope yours turns out as well as this one. Oh and the deer stay away from it😉

Laura from Garden Answer! I happen to love the Oregon grape. It does tend to look shabby, but I believe it is because it isn’t well taken care of because it is such a tough plant. With tlc, I think it could be a garden gem. Each leaflet reminds me of a holly. I’ve seen it along running trails and in the Fall, some of those leaflets are stunning, not to mention the vibrant blue berries are a great source of food for song birds. So, if you want more bird songs in your garden... And in Spring, those glorious yellow blossoms attract pollinators! I think a bit of prudent pruning/lifting the skirt (removing the lower branches and leaves) to reveal multi-trunks would allow this plant to sing melodies of wonder.

I was cracking up looking at the sticker on the plant from the beginning... then at the very end I FINALLY realized "Oh! The hat!" And then "Oh! The shirt!" The icing on the cake was how to pronounce Or-a-gen... What a fun way to start the day! Now I need to go research Oregon grape...🤣😂🤣🤣🤣❤❤❤❤

That was a fun video! I live in eastern Washington but have lived in Oregon (OR’-i-gun) before. You can come and dig all of the mahonia you like! I’ve spent countless hours and money for paid help to dig those thugs out of my bed. They have a really long root that runs along and doesn’t want to let loose. Maybe they won’t run rampant in your area. 🤞

I have 3 Oregon Grapes planted in my garden in Spain (zone 6 mountain) . The birds love it. The grapes appear just as the Starlings arrive from Africa and they strip it bare. But I love the plant, prickles and all. You and Laura make a great team!

As a lifelong oregon gardener I have seen this and many types throughout our state. Just today I was doing some bonsai and thought, "huh i wonder if anyone has used Oregon grape as a bonsai" so i went out my front door , walked across the street to the ditch and pulled one out and brought it home to bonsai. They are great plants.
