The Enthusiastic Gardener

3 жыл бұрын

It’s a big change for me as I’ve just left my job as the Headteacher’s Personal Assistant at my school after 13 years and I thought it would be symbolic to give my beautiful Mahonia a new lease of life as well.
I planted my Mahonia about 8 years ago and it’s been one of my favourite plants in the garden as it has so much year round interest with beautiful yellow flowers from November round to February, followed by dark purple black berries (which the birds love) in the summertime.
But my Mahonia has grown very tall and leggy and the middle section has turned yellow so it’s obviously unhappy, and so I thought it would be time to prune it right down which is what I am doing in today’s video. I have cut off around 4 feet and now it looks beautiful, fresh and revitalised. Ready for a new start, which is just how I’m feeling too 😊
If you’d like to join my Facebook page, also called The Enthusiastic Gardener, you can find it by clicking this link:

I am also on Instagram @the_enthusiastic_gardener
Have fun in your gardens!

Hello. I live in USDA Hardiness Zone 7b in Yorktown, Virginia. I have two outdoor potted mahonias, one small and one large, which have done quite well for several years. However, this year they have both taken on a rough appearance. The smaller one has lost a lot of leaves, and the larger one has quite a bit of discoloration. I don't think I'm overwatering the plants. They get plenty of sun. Do you have any suggestions? Thank you.
@TheEnthusiasticGardener
@TheEnthusiasticGardener Жыл бұрын
Hello there John and thanks for watching!! Mahonias actually prefer full or part shade, so I think morning sun is fine (east facing) but I’m wondering if that’s why yours are discolouring? I think you should try moving them out of the sun, if they are in pots, and I think that should help them. I think also if the tips of the leaves are turning brown then this is often a sign of overwatering. They actually tolerate neglect quite well because their nutrient requirements are very low so I think maybe move them into a more shady area and stop giving them quite so much water. I do hope that helps. Do let me know. Have a really happy weekend 🥰

@@TheEnthusiasticGardener Update: Hello once more. I moved the plants to a shadier spot behind a crape myrtle located on the east side of our home as well as I stopped watering them, and now I am noticing some improvement. I might even move them to the north side of the home instead. Should I prune the brown leaves off the plants though? Do I prune just the individual leaves or the whole stems? Thanks again.
@TheEnthusiasticGardener
@TheEnthusiasticGardener Жыл бұрын
@@urbanlegendsandtrivia2023 hello John! I’m so pleased to hear this and thanks for the update 😊 I think I would cut off the brown leaves because they’re dead now and not going to recover. If there are any green shoots further back then I’d probably cut down to there, but if it’s the whole stem which is brown then you might as well cut that off. So pleased I could help! As you probably saw in my video, I really cut loads off mine and it really rejuvenated it, although I didn’t get flowers (or so many) for the following year. But then I think I did mine summertime (trying to remember) so that’s probably why, but if you prune yours now, then it will have a ton of time to grow flowers, so this is probably the best time to do it. Happy Spring to you 😊
