All Barrett-Jackson Auctions are no reserve.
They require a $1500 entry fee. They charge the seller 8% and the buyer 10%.
My hopes were to sell the replica of the "Afterlife" Ghostbusters car before Halloween
to try to make the most money, I have sold several "ECTO" replicas in the past and they averaged about $150K each. There were two, nicer versions that sold at auction for over $200K in recent years, so I figured the car would do over $100K. This auction was a slaughter for sellers, bad economy or bad execution, it didn't do well. I was further slighted when in the middle of my auction the television show transitioned from the FYI network to History, with a commercial, so people watching on TV didn't get to see the whole auction. I was also told my potential phone bidders who wanted to bid that they could not get through on the phone. Everything that could go wrong did and someone ended up with a great deal on a great car.

Remember, auctioneers have been known, in the past, to have straw buyers. When it goes too cheap and people are saying they were having trouble getting bids through I would suspect more than a snafu. But that's just me.

@@thomaskauser8978 Parts? We took a car that hadn't run for 20 years, fully restored the engine, the entire brake system, all the electrical, new fuel tank, fabricated all the props, custom roof rack, light bars, sound system and a pull out rack with two $4000 Proton Packs into a replica of the Afterlife car. How is this "parts"? We have sold 3 other ECTO replicas in the past and they all sold for more than $100K each, the last one we sold last year sold for $150K. @@johntyson but you also claim is was the worst movie when it really wasn't. Afterlife was very good follow up/sequel to the original two movies. It honored the legacy as well as introduced new characters/elements to the universe Afterlife made a total of $204 million worldwide and $129 million domestically on a budget of like $70-$75 million, so while it wasn't a Marvel, Star Wars or DC total, it still made money. Enough money that Sony was happy with it and greenlit the sequel along with some other projects in the Ghostbusters universe. I don't think anyone is arguing that had the same cultural impact of at least the 1st movie. The core fanbase is just happy that we finally got another Ghostbusters movie with the original cast and are excited for the future including the next movie

@Spike16 sure it did/does. There's so many possibilities with the concept of a group of people who catch ghosts. Unfortunately this is the chance you take with a no reserve auction. Blaming the auction company is not the answer. I totally understand your frustration, it's quite obvious you had more invested than you received. There are lots of things that need to happen to make a successful sale. First is exposure for the car, people have to know about it, hoping the proper bidder is present at auction, also, the economy didn't help. The economy has no effect on guys who spend two and three hundred thousand at auction. But most of those buyers aren't looking for a ghost buster car. Sorry it went bad for you

That’s a hard loss to take, especially with all the hard work put into that car. I would not do anymore car auctions, Bob. You have a group of car collectors and a group of movie car collectors. The discovery was just made that the two just don’t occupy the same space. That car easily would go for at least double among movie car collectors (that probably don’t follow Barrett-Jackson). That’s a fantastic Ecto, but like you said - people see it on the stage with patina and are like “?????”. It’s a great build. Don’t let this keep you down.

Try this, go find one, restore it to full running and driving condition, then get all the props fabricated and wired up and see how long that takes, see how much it costs, also, do it in a professional shop full of guys making $30-$50 an hour for about months. Add all that up, then pay $1500 to enter and 8% selling fee. Let me know what that costs. This is my 4th ECTO, last one I sold went for $150K, one before that a few years ago was $125K, but the last one BJ sold was $220K. Mecum sold one for $220K. Like I said, go find one.

Where as the fin and the rest of the stranger things cast were *WAY TOO YOUNG* to be on a late night show and asides from the amount of sexualization the cast faced, especially millie with her stylists dressing her in outfits that were not appropriate for a 15 year old🤢

Think of how few people there are out there that would actually want to own a car like this. I’m sure the community that does want one of these was aware that it was available prior to the auction..why did it not sell then..56k plus tax and title is a crazy price to pay for a replica of such a specific car

I feel bad for you getting hosed but you took a gamble on a movie that was as movies go a flop.

Sorry the car didn't do better Bob. But, that's an auction for you. The car is worth what someone is willing to pay that day for. I had a cool rat rod I built that took me 6 years to complete and I took it to the auction expecting big numbers. I ended up getting half of what I had into it. I swore off auctions after that!

I did well selling an Italian classic at Monterey with RM in 2015 just before that bubble crashed and burned. Trick I learned is that I had RM take the car from me in April, had it in their showroom for months, and up on their website, advertised, etc. so that by the time the sale eventually came in Aug my car was well known. It only lasted a minute and a half on the block, but thats all it needed, the heavy selling work had all been done in the months leading up to the event.

With specialty cars like that you can't set a reserve that needs to be met?

And I was thinking about selling my 64 Corvair Monza coupe on Barret, going by your you tube video, maybe I will stick with the other selling sites.

You should try renting some of your cars out when you get to Vegas>. I think you'd do very well with that.

Unfortunately the decades I Bern to auctions and took stuff to auction. That's the only problem with auctions you never know unless you put a reserve on it. Extra expense but sometimes worth it. It's a risk just like gambling at Vegas.
