In one of the most in-depth expansions in Cities: Skylines history, Industry becomes a larger and more meaningful part of the game with this expansion. Players can customize their industrial areas with supply chains for the four different resource types and unique factories. Well managed industry areas will level up and become more efficient. I spent many years driving semi all over the US. One thing you learn is trucks are banned in many places for many reasons. I found in game the heavy traffic ban really didn't work all that well. Then I subbed TMPE a couple years ago. I ban trucks similar to that in real life. I ban all different types of traffic depending the need. I keep trucks mostly to main arteries which is where they really have business and not in residential for the most part. Nothing is set in stone and it is a whole lot of micromanagement. The hard part is like you said when adding something new it changes traffic flow. If I run into a snare and feel my blood pressure rise I walk away for a little while sometimes for days.

Are there any "quick fix" solutions you can share? Protective parking /planting (especially in aid of Lane management) appears to be urban only.

@@salmjak in the early days of the city you can put them not in the middle of the buildings and more towards the outskirts. Then as the game progresses you can get treatment facilities. But the biggest thing is to avoid having it run off next to the intakes

@@salmjak You can also use eco friendly if you have the green dlc and place them apart and all downriver to lessen water pollution concentration. Doing so also increases aesthetic because your river will have a washed out brown and not chocolate milk if not a dirty blue.

9:45 What I usually do with these kinds of road is I change the left-side lane to go straight. This way, if they do want to go left, they go straight on until the roundabout, go all the way around, and take the lane now on the right. It results in a much better flow, as your traffic is not waiting for a path to clear.

Tip: I discovered the other day that turning the speed limits down on roundabouts lets the cars pull out closer together giving better flow. This works really well on "highway" roundabouts where the default is 100Kph!

Rena Kunisaki depends on the connecting roads, I try and match them, and then I also might change the speed on the connecting roads if there are big differences. You can also use the two lane one way road if you need a slower speed and there are only small roads connected. But the best way is to try and see.

Neat, indeed. The problem is, there is plenty of highway, but only one service interchange, aka the big roundabout the incoming highway is hitting onto. To add to it, everyone from the other highway has to pass through the system intechange to get onto the roundabout, too. Third thing, the industrial area is not connected well to this roundabout, when it should have its own highway connection in the first place. If the city wants to grow, it will need more connections.

I have a feeling this whole mess could have been fixed by adding a couple of exists from the city onto the highway. The big roundabout is the only exit, all the traffic issues happened due to it. You fixed all the traffic coming in by adding more entrances but there is still only one exit. all the work put into the side roads to smooth the traffic onto the main roundabouts will cause issues later unless additional exits will be added.

I worked on this same city.. got 80%+ with 26k people, no mass transit, and no additional highway on ramps/slip lanes. Did put two exit slip lanes inside of the city (rather than what I think is kinda cheating by putting them all over the non-constructed parts of the city)

he turned the main heavy traffic exit of the city into a U-turn facing a one way in road. It kinda worked but it would have been better if he installed an exit slipway in the same location, to let the trucks exit without entering the main Roundabout route in the first place.

This is a good example of why spreading highway traffic around a city with multiple access points > piling it onto one big interchange that criss-crosses the city Spreading it in a ring-road-ish manner works similarly

Suddenly i want to try to build an entire city of roundabouts........ no connecting roads except 4 motorway links, everything one way. The traffic management will be easy because every ring will only have 4 links tops.

Couple of vids now lately junctions - people need to be more careful about adding vehicles to major roads before removing them. Off-ramp then on-ramp not on-ramp then off-ramp. Also if you have a large road between two large roundabouts - turning left is haram (in RHD). No seriously ban right turns so you don't have so many cars crossing over each other, if they're desperate to turn off then just have to run down to roundabout. Works much better than a one-way.

so your ultimate traffic fix is to turn your roading network into a series of roundabouts? Interesting idea. Probably might want to turn 'u-turns' on at some intersections to complete the effect

@@glenmcgillivray4707 Not at all but like the road at 8:45 shouldn't have crossing traffic or at minimum most junctions on it shouldn't. There's a roundabout at each end if they need to come back.

That's only working fine if the roundabout can handle the turning traffic. I did this for an industry area, which became completely clogged due to this. Adding dedicated left turn lanes, however, gave the traffic more efficient options and reduced the traffic in my roundabouts going in and out of the area effectively.

Its a pleasant change to see such a well built city with small traffic problems get fixed compared to cities which leave you saying "Whyyy!!??" Also, you should try and to a revisit to a city that you previously fixed and see how well it's grown and if your traffic changes are still implemented

If you have two 6-lane roads crossing each other you can setup timed traffic lights with free (in this case) right turn. Then you always have one lane for right one for straight and one for left. That works quite nice. Then the right lane almost always is empty and that’s good for emergency vehicles

you can also bridge the smaller roads over the main road, so that they have to take the roundabout

I feel like your intro music should be Yes - Roundabout. From when the bass kicks in to just before the first line "I'll be the roundabout." A nice upbeat tempo 13 seconds long. Asking politely you could probably get permission to use it royalty free.

I feel like the main issue in this city was indeed that there was basically one giant junction and everybody entering the city had to use it. You added a bunch of slip lanes for people to get into the city, but no slip lanes to get back out again! This probably why all the trucks suddenly had to through the main roundabout when leaving, good epsiode! 👍

something i've noticed about roundabouts, if there are a lot of left turners, it's usually a good idea to add in a bypass just for them. They always want to grab the inside most lane in the roundabout and back everything up because they have to wait for all 3 lanes to be clear to move.

Awesome as usual. One idea that I've used in my city (and seems to work) Instead of one waying the 6 lane roads at 19.30 perhaps force them to take a right and follow traffic to the nearest roundabout. It stops the cross over delays and leaves it all nice and flowy, and would make use of that second roundabout too :D * Aaaaaaand, give them a dedicated lane to enter. There'll be plenty of room to change lanes *

Biffa! You let people come into the town cause it was congested with everyone only have one spot to get in, but you didn't give anyone any other options for getting out of the city. Which is why you still had bad traffic after fixing the incoming highway. Love your stuff though. Keep it up!

I don't know if you did this intentionally Biffa but at the end, the comparison shot. I really like the sync with the beat but it would be a bit easier to process (imho) if the camera heights wouldn't be that different between the versions. I guess you wanted to separate the two versions with that? Anyways nice video :)

Tip for this kind of situation: what you wanna do is set up the roundabouts as a big 'ovalabout'. So no crossing on that main street, only go straight and one lane for turning right. If they wanna go left they can use the roundabout and turn around that way.

The thing I would do differently to fix the area in the last part of the video is to make it so people can't turn left on to the on-coming lanes on the main road. Basically making it so that people can only go straight or right, while people joining that road can only take right as well. That way, if someone decides to go to the other side of the city, either build bridges to the other side or they take the roundabout. I feel like with the current solution, when the city grows larger, its gonna see a lot more traffic and the problem will surely come back.

@biffa @6:35 there is a simple solution for this... if you check WHICH vehicles need to go where (trucks/industrial zone) etc i always prefer to set the road atleast 5 sections before the roundabout to select busses and trucks on the right side and block them on the other 2 lanes use the other 2 lanes for everything else. then at the roundabout let them decide to switch lanes... this way, the vehicles wont even switch lanes yet they will use ALL lanes and because of the laneswitch lines you put for cars coming OFF other roads onto that part before the roundabout they still stick to their lane regardless of being allowed to be there or not.

21:00 I'm pretty sure about IF you do "one way exit only" on ALLLLLL the roads attached on a roundabout, the roundabout will be green trafficed very quickly!

At 10:17, I wouldn't consider timed traffic lights. Instead just take away the left turns. With roundabouts at either side, it isn't that hard to just go around, or take a different exit on the roundabout on the left.

Very cool city setup. Everyone (or almost everyone) enters the city through that massive underground enter change The zones are segregate and the city works well And Biffa, again the before/after split screen at then end is amazing. I just realized, you didn’t add a single roundabout, so sad. #roundabouted

@ 25:14, the cars are stopped on the main blvd bc of the pedestrian traffic. I would create pedestrian bridges along the main blvd and ban pedestrians from crossing.

I thought you were going to eliminate left hand turns on the major roads between roundabouts. Thus eliminating cross traffic causing oncoming traffic to stop. Just a thought.

Yeah that would have solved those traffic issues between the 2 large roundabouts. No problems accessing each side (because of the roundabouts) and no left hand turns. It would have been brilliant.

After learning so much about traffic management from you, as you were doing lane management on the major road between roundabouts I expected that you would eliminate all right hand turns. Effectively making a mega roundabout/“dog bone” type thing to keep everyone going left.

I love the idea of train tracks between the highways, however there seems to be a lot of dead ends.

It's better in the roundabout 2 FOR GOING OFF so that the people who wants to turn don't go in only 1 lane:the people that goes around the roundabout has the first lane, the people that wants to only turn right in the first exit has the other lane. (It's like a slip lane) With only one lane, the people that wants to go to the first exit and the people that goes around the roundabout are funnel in only one lane.

6:50 In reality, drivers priorise the more right lane before a roundabout, because they can enter in the roundabout then ONLY the right lane have "open window" (enought empty space before the next vehicule in the roundabout). If they come from left lane, they need to wait ALL lanes (if roundabout have as much lanes as the entering road) of the roundabout have "open window" to go in... and that is clearly not optimise. I hope to be clear enought... In the game, they seams to priorise the left lane. Maybe that's why the traffic is slow here. Maybe lane math on the roundabout node can solve the problem.

When you said, you can't make it a two lane because then the other lane would be four lane, at 14:55, you could have made the lane coming straight from the other side a one lane, because the lane mathematics would have been correct when you would have done it on the entire junction.

Was hoping for a built-in traffic route tool, would help seeing where the problem was immediately Also, make main roads priority roads (just click on the road, the button's there), traffic will stop using the side roads

This is another case of a neatly sorted city with too few crossings between the sorted areas and unnecessary use of what should be arterial roadways (6-lane) for local traffic. A boulevard between the residential zones beyond those two central rotaries would probably ease traffic, too. (Perhaps instead of throwing in the huge one-way roads??) Is this city also making trucks go through residential sections on the way to Commercial/highways? Yeah, that's a bad bit of planning, too.

With regards to the left-center-right for 3-lane roads... I always find that a better way to handle these is to do left/straight/straight-right. This allows for two lanes going straight so cars turning have a better chance of getting into the lane! :)

i hope someday you will fix 100k or maybe 150k city population traffic. I have 100k population city, but the traffic seems very fine with 80% traffic flow.

When your doing the lanes on the main roads and there 3 lanes u make one right, one strait, one left. You can make it stay in lane and then the roads coming from the right use the right lane turn on only. If that makes any sence

Yet another city where the core problem seemed to be the lack of highway connections and road options for traffic to take. Roundabouts or no, traffic all crammed into taking only a few roads will always cause a mess. I'd really like to see a video from Biffa where he fixes the cause of the traffic first. Only problem I could see with that is that often it would require a redesign of the road system which he said he doesn't want to do.

7:15 half and half........ The top half goes down a lane in the first and down a lane in the second.... (here is the other half part) The bottom lane goes half up in the first, and half up in the second..... That gives you a more even approach, instead of all down in the first one, and all up in the second...

Could be just me, but I got a feeling that this fix could have been much easier. you added all those slip lanes for traffic to get of the highways. But traffic that wants to get onto the highway still gets funneled into that one single roundabout. Adding slip lanes to get back onto the highway where they already get off might have been easier then shepherding them all the way through the city.

19:58 I think instead of those one-way pieces, setting the two side roads to only go right (i.e. to one of the roundabouts instead of crossing the main road), possibly with a smaller road than the 2×3-lanes, should be enough here, and still allow some traffic to go where they want, instead of routing through the rest of the city. 25:15 You didn't miss the lane management, it changed when you introduced the one-way roads.

shoulda installed a slip lane to EXIT the city on the main industrial link at 20 minutes. Didn't. Opportunity missed.

In all the time I've been playing C:S I've never had any issues with traffic. And I played vanilla on console for a while. I always used smooth intersections. Lane mathematics only started being a factor with a recent update too the game. Worst I've gotten my traffic to was around 69%
