I really wish the horror genre was more respected in the film and award industry. It really pisses me off that Mia, Rebecca Hall, Lupita N’yongo, and Toni Collette were not recognized by the awards industry just because the films that they thrived in were horror films.

@e9ari

@@devonmunn5728 i agree. i mean obviously it would be better if those actors were recognised with awards, but i recently read an interview that Toni Collette did and she said (paraphrasing) that seeing so many people outraged over her being snubbed for “Hereditary” was a form of recognition equal to an award, which i thought was quite a novel way of thinking about it. Like, if the snubbery becomes so obvious to the point of widespread discussion then it shows how many people truly value the work of the actors. I hope i worded that in a way that makes sense 😅😅

21:59 i actually think that the scene of the mom sobbing was to show how deeply unhappy she was with her life that she was sobbing in secret, and i thought the implication was that this was regular for her - that she often/nightly cries out of regret for what has become of her life, but since pearl is normally asleep at the time, pearly never witnessed it before. it's to humanize the mother and kind of start the audience's empathizing with the mom because she clearly has been dealt difficult cards in life and is not at all happy about it but she sucks it up and represses it and does her duty anyways

Mia Goth is the granddaughter of a great Brazilian actress, and it's uncanny how much she looks like her. Also, the movies Mia stars in are reminiscent of her grandma's legacy. Her grandma is the Queen of Marginalized Cinema, a counterculture movement in Brazil that was greatly repressed during the Brazilian Military Dictatorship. The movement criticized the very polished commercial films at the time, and it brought up indie films with plots on the grotesque side, that pictured the horrors lived by the marginalized populations. It had a grunge, explicit aspect to it, with sex scenes and all. They never intended to be underground cinema, but the censorship during the Dictatorship made them be.

I usually hate horror movies, but this one really was interesting in that it was more about the horrors of what the effects of emotional neglect and forced servitude from parental figures can do to a person. Pearl was unique in that she has the ability to feel, she is not a psychopath -- she does feel things very deeply. To me, this was a mentally ill womans struggle with wanting to feel validated and loved by as many people as possible to make up for the countless years of emotional neglect she had at home. She hyperfixated on her dream, and because of mental deterioration from years of nobody believing in her... She had finally had enough and snapped at anyone who told her she couldn't achieve her dreams. By the end of the film, when she wasn't chosen it was like watching someone finally give up on their dreams and accept they're never going to amount to anything. The movie was a tragedy at its core, despite the horror themes.
@sarah-zv8ld

maybe you just haven't seen the right horror movies then! in my personal opinion, what you described is what the genre does best. yes a lot of horror movies are shock fests that lack depth, but the best ones are the ones that reflect the unsavory aspects in real life. if you liked pearl, id recommend rosemary's baby. its one of my favorites and it explores the lack of autonomy that rosemary has in her own life and pregnancy. the horror in that movie comes the most from how rosemary is treated by those around her. its very psychological so id highly recommend it!

I think one of the more fascinating elements of the movie to me is that pearl does seem to actually love her parents. Like she seems genuinely horrified at what happened to her mother and speaks to her father with an element of tenderness. Like pearl strikes me in many ways as more tragic than outright villainous. And I think a lot of that depth can be attributed to Mia Goth and what an absolutely amazing job she did in this roll. That monolog hit me so hard. Also I was genuinely sad that Mitzy didn't survive. She seemed very sweet and genuine and likely she truly wanted to help Pearl. Also I'm not sure if mitzy actually got the part. I'm not sure if you're supposed to know for sure but it could be read either as she did get the part and tried to lie to protect Pearl's feelings, or that she was being honest when she said she didn't get it but didn't want to set Pearl off so just went along with it when Pearl insisted.

I really do love the cut to Mitzy where she's all: O_O after listening to Pearl wax on about how messed up she is, reminds me of the end scene in Amadeus where an aging Salieri describes to a priest how he believes he was responsible for the death of Mozart and the priest looks absolutely horrified

I went into the Pearl movie knowing nothing except for the "I'm a star" clip, and I absolutely loved it, mia goth really turns it, I was just full of dread thinking about what was going to happen next and the decision to go full Technicolor makes a nice contrast between the color and horror/gore shown. I do agree that it made X more likable (though it wasn't as good as its prequel), Pearl is one crazy bitch but I did feel bad for her at times, she made a really good villain

Fun fact(s): Mia Goth also played the elderly version of Pearl in X, just in makeup. She also plays Maxine, the protagonist of X (they're played by the same actress for symbolic reasons, as they're meant to mirror each other). X and Pearl were also shot simultaneously (or at least within the same window of time). So, Mia goth, over the course of a few months, starred in two different movies, in one of which she played two different leading characters. Damn impressive

Idk if you’ve talked to a physiatrist but when I first realized I had adhd mine said that adhd in adults usually looks like anxiety. And treating adhd with meds will actually help the anxiety and that’s what happened to me after I started my meds (I got a non-stimulant that works thankfully)
@ernie39

Seconded! One of the reasons my diagnosis took so long was because my therapist put the cart before the horse trying to make sure "it wasn't just anxiety/depression," instead of recognizing that having unrecognized/undiagnosed ADHD can be very anxiety- and hopelessness-inducing. Since I've gotten medication and accommodation for my ADHD, my anxiety (especially related to productivity/remembering things) has gotten a lot better!! I'm also Much less prone to depressive episodes lmao. Sometimes my increased lucidity while I'm medicated can cause me anxiety, but overall it's helped me feel a lot better :-)

I just want to gently? Push back on that. Because ADHD often comes along with anxiety and depression (wether developed because of issues with ADHD, or also passed down the fun gene line) and ADHD meds can trigger anxiety. It's happened to me, and it's why my psychiatrist started me on antidepressants before I got on ADHD meds. Obviously it's different for everyone, I just wouldn't want someone who has both of them to make their anxiety worse from the ADHD meds. Edit: rereading and saw you didn't go on a stimulant! Which could definitely explain it, because it's the stimulants that can trigger anxiety. I'm super curious, if you're okay with sharing what meds are you on? I've never heard of ADHD treatment that isn't stimulant based.

I always thought the mom was crying because of the overall stress and regret she feels everyday, especially since during the dinner scene she basically projects onto Pearl her own resentments and regrets regarding her having to take care of her husband like she was his mother rather than his wife. Also I’ve never believed mitzy got the part because 1. we never see her audition because she switched places in line with pearl, to which I think that was on purpose and 2. she genuinely seemed like she didn’t know what pearl was talking about when she congratulated her.

The only thing I disagree with is that I genuinely believed Mitsy when she said she didn't get the part - I think when Mia 'called her out', she only swapped to 'oh...well...I hope you can come see the show sometime...' because she was trying to play along with whatever the clearly deranged Pearl wanted, so she could leave safely. Clearly she bet wrong, but Pearl was extremely set in her victim mindset and 'justifying' murder in her head because 'Mitsy always gets everything' - Pearl INSISTED that Mitsy got the part, even if it's not true, because otherwise her worldview justifying 'revenge' wouldn't make sense. Pearl was either going to kill her for lying, or kill her for 'getting everything' - Mitsy was in an impossible situation.
