I'm a big fan of Andy Timmons' tones and playing, and so when this Halo pedal came out a few months back, I wanted to check it out, but the price was a bit prohibitive. The price in the UK at the time was around £319, though I think they can be found for about £285 now. The key question though - can the Helix do that? I'm not sure, but here's a try.
Please leave a comment if you want me to drop this preset into the folder "HaloThief"

I thought they both sounded good, and quite similar. Thanks John for consistently rising to the challenge of seeing if the Line 6 Helix Modelers can emulate such of wide variety of Pedals and specialty tones. We should remember that none of those pedals can come close to emulating the variety of what Modelers can do. As far as which sound in the comparison was which, I can't say. Device B sounded a bit more compressed, so I'll guess it was the Helix, and the compressed sound was due to trying to even out the volume of the first repeat in the delay.

John thanks for doing the hard yards on this one, was keen to see if you could get there, and it is close. The Halo has been the only delay or modulation type pedal that’s really tempted me since getting the HX Stomp. My holy grail would be Polymoon I think. I got LVX and after playing around and being amazed at all it can do I settled on just a simple diffused Poly structure that is just the best stereo experience I've had, period. I might end up selling LVX and getting the Polymoon as it's the only one I'm using.

One interesting thing I've battled with is my "always on" delay. It's the kind of delay you want on especially for clean, to just give that little bit of spatial tone without being an obnoxious repeat trail. I have a Strymon El Capistan which I still use. However honestly the Transistor Tape Delay in the Stomp, does a better job of the "always on" delay.

Fascinating video. I’m agreeing with most of the people commenting on this, which is to say that both sound absolutely great. Yes, I hear a little difference in the Halo, but that difference doesn’t so much sound “better” as just a little different. Btw, if you recorded the guitar dry and then ran that through both the Halo and the Helix, maybe the differences would be more specific?

The Halo is Device B! The sound is fantastic, more natural than the Helix can! I think the band structure will then clearly show what the halo can do, it shouldn't cover the sound but make an audible ECHO! Better than El Capistan and Dig from Strymon? We will hear! I think you can make an extremely good sound with all the pedals mentioned, but the Halo takes up much less space on the pedalboard. In addition, you not only have a tape echo but several useful ones in one pedal and you can save 8 sounds. Actually, the case is clear the Halo is a hit!

I think you did a great job with the Helix, but the sound is too down the center. The Halo immediately sounds way wider, which is largely coming from phase reversing one of the delay lines. Not sure if the Helix can do that? In the Fractal, if you want to get someone close without completely driving yourself bonkers, use the standard Delay block and use the Dual Delay type, which has cross feedback. Set the feedback of the second delay negative, which reverses the phase. You can dial in some modulation, drive and diffusion to taste in the advanced tabs. Look at one of the tape delay types and copy over parameters from there for things like EQ and modulation.
@johnnathancordy
@johnnathancordy Жыл бұрын
I'm not sure if it's definitely much wider? I can get it wider in the Helix, but I specifically brought it in from the 100% panning - but yeh in the Fractal I think some other more creative things would be possible too like you suggest!
@jessenicholson1777
@jessenicholson1777 Жыл бұрын
@@johnnathancordy it makes no logical sense but when you phase reverse a signal, you get a "wider than 100%" width, which is referred to as a phychoacoustic effect. You may notice in some blocks in the fractal, you can go to 200% spread, which is 100% with one side phase reversed. A good example of this principle is a TC2290, which is technically a mono delay unit, but has the right output phase reversed 180 degrees. Try a TC2290 after a cab and toggle the phase reverse on and off to see what this does. On the Halo, especially in the trails you hear them as being way off to the sides. I think that even gets at why they called it a halo.

@@johnnathancordy The Aurora model in the MultiTap Block is supposed to be a halo.
