If a parent can afford to pay for a child’s undergraduate education, then that’s great, but you don’t pretend that you can by taking out a parent plus loan and then live in severe debt so that you can pretend you paid for your kids education.

Caller better hope the kid really appreciates the parent plus loan and pays it back with interest. Or he and his wife will be spending retirement in a tent.

Why is this dad paying for everything?? His kid is NOT debt-free. The kid ought to be helping. The wife can do some adjunct teaching on the side to make more money too.

If they are working in education, they should both already have retirement plans. Also, do they have a house? If so, it must be paid off since he didn't list it as a debt. I would have asked a few more questions before giving advice.

Like this guy thought that Dave was going to change his plan to be debt free just for him for this one time, so he could start on his retirement money, instead of getting out of debt? That's almost funny.

WOW... I completely disagree with Dave. My philosophy is the very first thing you need to do when you get a job is put 15% in retirement funds. After that you live below your means and invest your savings wisely, you can also pay off your debts with this money but never... NEVER EVER, stop investing in your retirement. Investing in your retirement is more important then owning a home or paying off student debt. The problem is people like to spend and they get loans for everything... this is the problem. So... no car loans, no computer loans, stay away from apple and embrace Chromebooks or PCs, shop for insurance using insurance brokers, cut your cable bill (only pay for internet). Like Dave says, live like no other and work on your student loans but again, never... NEVER EVER stop investing in your retirement and invest a minimum of 15%.

My advice to this gentleman and his wife is save as much money as possible and then pay what you can toward those debts. At 56, time is wasting. They need to save at least 40% of their income. If he and his wife were younger, then they could probably afford to put a little less, but right now is crunch time, baby. Good luck!!!
