personally i feel drug addicts should be sent to rehabs or mental facility’s instead of jail or prison unless theres an actual crime involved. jail/prison most likely isn’t going to help just make it worse.

Depending on your state you can get sent to rehabilitation but there’s still jail time

And implement rehabs in the jail. Criminals also deserve an opportunity to get clean and treat their addictions.

if there is a crime involved, they should either go through rehab or mental treatments while they’re IN the facility, or they should be recommended to rehab facilities after they’re released from jail or prison on a probation contract for like…3-6 weeks or something. even if they don’t want it, i think it would be really beneficial for them. at least they would be hearing it so they can think back to what they learned while they went through the treatment if they ever feel like quitting. or maybe if they haven’t started again already, they could think about what they learned if they have feelings of wanting to relapse. i really don’t know how to go about it but i just wish they could all get the help they all truly deserve.

A lot of addicts are really self aware. I would say it’s a bell curve. A lot of us are on the low end of the curve, a lot of us on the high end. It hurts to exist for many people and drugs help in a way. But it really destroys you.

@@riggymarzofficial I’m 22, newly sober.. great video! I appreciate you Giving us addicts a voice.. I know you weren’t trying to speak for all of us but those of us that relate to your story appreciate it. Being an addict is hard… I also got arrested and am currently on probation myself.. it gives me accountability but I really worry when it’s done, will I go back? I’m also duel diagnosed with Bipolar 1, BPD, & of course depression & anxiety. I do notice when I’m not seeing a therapist the intrusive thoughts to use are more prominent. I’m on Suboxone and it helps but I know it’s not a forever thing I can stay on so I guess I’m at a crossroads. Staying sober for the rest of my life really upsets me.. like “one day at a time” seems important for me bc forever seems impossible. But I can stay sober today.

There is a very harmful stereotype that addicts are shady/liars and have no self control just impulsive. but every addict I’ve ever known is very self-aware and very transparent.

yea as a high schooler i always seen memes about weed online, or in shows or movies thats what made me want to try it. Now 2 years later, i havent had 1 day without weed and its rlly hard to stop

the movie scene wasn't the start. The predisposition to substance addiction and the mental health issues without adequate support systems was the start of this. The addiction would have occured regardless of the Leo scene, lets not stigmatize addiction further with misinformation.

I'm the same age as him, and I've had addiction issues for around 20 years. It's a crazy hard process. I recently quit drinking. I find myself wondering who I even am without the substances. I'm completely rewiring my brain. This is the stage where a lot of people relapse because you feel lost and apathetic...grumpy. My brother passed away recently from his addictions, and I just need to live differently now, and no going back.

thank u for sharing with us. no matter what happens, the fact that you are able to recognize your position and try to work towards being better is a huge step. if you fall on your journey, that’s fine, but try your best to get back up and keep going. you will thank yourself in the long run. have patience with urself too cus i know you know that this healing process will take a lot longer than you think. you got this :) 🤍

Same. Ive been clean for 18 years. Its a process and you will have cravings, and irs definitely not easy. But if you want to stay clean bad enough, you will. Don't think of having to go through life without it, think of it as finally being able to live life without it.

@@sirdoosh5935 i agree, at the end of the video as well he was cooling himself off with his hat when he was seeing everyone. Of course could be just nervers but i assume that whatever he took started to wear off and he started to get cold sweats or anxiety

I lost both my parents in October and December of 2021 to their addictions. My mother overdosed on heroin laced with fentanyl and my father drank himself to death...I appreciated the story of the girl whose mother is an addict, I understand her. I held a lot of resentment for my mother’s addiction and father’s drinking while I was alive, but now I realize that I wish I was just more supportive of her and her attempts at finding peace in a world where death is imminent. You should do “I’m a child of an addict, ask me anything”

first of all i wanted to say thank you for sharing your story. second of all you did what you could, it’s not easy growing up watching someone you love slowly destroy themselves. it was not your responsibility as their child to take care of them. don’t blame yourself for not being more supportive you are also a human being, just like they were. i’m sending my love and prayers to you and i hope you and your family heal❤️

That is such a great idea for a video. My mom just went to jail for the 4th time in the last few years because of her addiction to drugs. She's been an addict off and on since I was 4 and I'm currently 13. That video idea would most likely make such a great support mechanism for other kids going through the same thing. Btw I'd just like to say we have the same name 😄. And sorry for your loss!

My parents were addicts. My father died from a heart attack when I was 4 and my mom took her life when I was 5. My heart is with everyone who is battling addiction or recovering

I lost my boyfriend of 8 years in February, 2.12.22 I found him dead on our couch due to a fetnayl overdose. This has just crushed my entire existence, I was so in love and admired him so deeply. I fought so hard to let know I’m here for him, to get him help, to just be a loving ear for him, a warm embrace when he wanted it, I never gave up on him, and although I lost him I am so glad I stood by him so he died knowing he was so loved :( I can’t imagine so many addicts having not much support from famlily feeling so unloved or unwanted or like a burden. Addiction is so hard n it essentially turns our love ones into strangers, people who no longer recognize, but they need all the love we can give. Please don’t give up on them. He used to tell me I was his only reason to live, that broke me, I wanted him to have many reasons to want to live :( I miss him so much every single day. My best friend my soulmate, I love you with all my heart Tj, not a day goes by that I don’t miss you. Forever & always. Yours truly. My sweet Angel.

Sorry but no you can choose to be their for an addict if you want but don't guilt other people into it. People please remember you can't set yourself on fire to keep someone else warm. By all means give up on them if that's what you need to do. You can love an addict from a far but you don't have to be there for them you don't need to help or support them. Addiction is selfish I speak as a smoker a heavy drinker an ex drug user. We are being selfish. So you need to be selfish to to protect yourself.

I've been addicted to heroin for a little over 10 years now. I've tried multiple times to get clean and I can never get it to stick. I hope one day I'm able to beat it but to be honest sometimes I feel like ending my life because I don't think I'll ever be able to beat it and it's a miserable existence

Don’t give up. I’ve been sober off herion for over five years. It gets easier with time. Stick to it, it can feel so impossible in the beginning but I promise you it gets better and it’s so worth it. We only have one life and think how you would like to spend the rest of it. I’ve lost too many friends and it’s not worth it. Don’t let this drug take any more from you.

Addiction needs to be de-stigmatised, and also drugs in general. But as long as we're criminalising drug use in most if the world still, addiction is gonna be tied to a stigma and seeking help and getting clean is hard, like the bar is higher than it needs to be. Most of the times it seems like there's an underlying mental health problem that's fueling the desire to get high and continuous arrests don't help that problem. Sometimes we need to protect others from some addicts if they get violent but most addicts aren't even visible to the outside world. It's really sad how this is still something we're dealing with in a way that needs miles of improvement

@@belivuk2526 correct me if I'm wrong, but de-criminalising often doesn't mean that the behaviour becomes legal - lemme explain. Where I live, they recently decriminalized prostitution to promote people stuck in those cycles reaching out to authorities, but pimping is still illegal. It's only for the people doing the job, but providing them with that in the first place is still a crime (and frankly, the part that causes the problem). So decriminalizing addicts doesn't mean decriminalizing drug dealing. It just helps people reach out.

Absolutely. Jailing addicts simply for use, does not solve the problem. Or no one would be addicts. Addiction is a mental and emotional health issue.

@@belivuk2526 getting help is not as easy and available as you think. Especially depending on where you live. While doing drugs is a choice, no one chooses to be a drug addict. Sometimes self medicating with drugs is felt by some ppl as the only other option to ending ones life.

Is it just me that found the part where he started because he saw it in movies utterly heartbreaking? Maybe it could’ve been a book or a passing conversation but it really shows the impact that media can have in peoples’ lives!! So YES it is a big deal the way things are portrayed

He spent the entire video listing off reasons why he was addicted and why he wasn't getting better, and none of those reasons were because he saw it in a movie. Most people who try drugs don't end up addicted. People get addicted because of upbringing, mental health, and genetics. Silencing the media wouldn't stop kids from getting addicted. De-criminalization is so much more important to recovery and safe experimentation.

@@xylek9483how does decriminalization help someone experiment with huffing WD40 more safely? Or make fentanyl safer or prevent cocaine from being laced with other stuff? Maybe full legalization where you buy your heroin, coke, and fentanyl directly from the government prevents some of it from being tainted - but does it really make it safer to experiment with crack, meth, or fent?

I get why being alone would be a big fear, drug addicts get hugely isolated from friends family and society which is the opposite of what they need. I’m not saying feed into their addictions but be there as an emotional support during hard times and let them know that they aren’t alone, isolation can eat people up even without drugs.

When the drugs wear off you still have to deal with the issues you have ,,the biggest thing I learn ,,, it’s just putting a bandaid over your problems, the more you do it the more of a rabbit hole you dig your self…. We grow by facing our problems instead of running away from it ..

As an addict in recovery many of us have suffered trauma as children such as myself. Mine was abandonment as an infant and again at 11 and then at 17.

@@angelaveale3615 I did too .. if knew my childhood history .. stats would say I should be a addicted .. we was abused , misled , violent childhood … I got tired turn to drugs, I will admit I never became a full blown addict because I realized it messing me up worse so I stayed sober and went to therapy for my trauma

Speaking as someone who has overcome depression. At 1st through the use of drugs then on my own. The answer is not criminalization. I wish our country would realize addicts need help. Real long term care. That’s the move forward. Now those who refuse help and commit crimes to support their habit are not the people I speak of. This video made me tear up thinking about how far I’ve come. How it is possible to get your life together and move pass such an ugly disease. Wow.

So both of my parents are drug addicts and my mother used it while pregnant with me. So with that said, I think I may have a “predisposition” to drugs.. but I never ever touched in any drugs until 2 years ago. I met a guy and had a very very abusive relationship with him. He introduced me to cocaine and i got so addicted to it. But I couldn’t use it without him if I did he’d get mad and I’d get afraid he’d break up with me. It was a very bad relationship.. to this day I want to take drugs but I control myself. I think people shouldn’t encourage others to drugs like he did to me…

I am a recovering addict, unfortunately recently I relapsed after being almost one year sober. I despise the fact that addiction is a crime. I didn't choose to be an addict, they way my life unfolded and the situations I was put in caused my addiction. It really is a very hard battle and it's really hard to know how many people don't see us as deserving of respect.

Thank you for bringing awareness to this, and to him for being so vulnerable. Getting clean is legit the hardest thing I've ever done in my life, and I totally relate to how he talks about his son. My daughter is almost the age I was when I started using, and my kids following in my footsteps is my worst fear. Nobody deserves to live like that, we need more opportunities to have conversations like this to break down the stigma associated with addiction.

Is he high now? Reminds me of my first husband. What a lot of people don't understand is that BEFORE they were addicts, many of these people have a mild preexisting mental condition, that went undiagnosed, and they began "self medicating" at a young age, and instantly got addicted to a substance which provided an alternative mental state, to give them comfort. Then it grows out of control. At least that's how it was for me. I still drink, moderately, but I'm nowhere near as bad as I used to be. My ex-husband introduced me to most of it, as we both suffered Asperger's and the drugs were a mental retreat. I'm just happy that I'm able to be happy again and experience motivation and joy without having to get high 24/7.

I’ve had opioid addiction issues for like 6 years. It all started when I took a Percocet because of my back pain. It went from one and taking the pain away, to escalating to 7 a day to 10. All I can say is I loved the way it took every bit of pain I had away. It’s so easy for them to take over you. Now I use methadone, but at least I’m able to have a normal life.

Hey Jubilee! I would like to potentially be apart of a future video about drug addiction. My mother died in January from drugs, and my whole life i had to deal with the pain of that and throughout my life i learned a lot. I have the gene and became an alcoholic and I’m now 2 years sober, so i think being in one of these videos would be a great opportunity for me because the drug problem/mental health crisis is the biggest thing that needs advocating for in my opinion!! I believe that America needs to step it up and start caring for their people and stop criminalizing humans for being subjected to very thing that was caused by the system in the first place.

@@angelaveale3615 I hear people say well they should just stop. It’s not something that can just be dropped cold turkey. I tell people imagine trying to stop breathing. That’s what addiction is like to them. It takes a village to try to keep them clean. And it is a lifetime battle.

Getting to the point of *wanting* to be clean was always the kicker. I wanted to want sobriety, or just to not be dependent on anything to function, but getting there was impossible. I didn't distinguish between those two feelings, (wanting to change and hoping I'd ever 'want' to change) until I had a few years clean. It still feels like a random paradigm shift that I was just "lucky" to have. Once I actually wanted to change things, it was possible. Whereas before, it was going through the motions out of guilt or my responsibility to others. When it came down to it, for me, I had to be selfish and do it for 'me'.

This conversation needs to happen more between humans. I see addicted person and I want not to just help them, but also to understand them. One of my brothers started using around the same age, a little bit younger. He’s in his 40s now and there’s no end in sight. I pray this guy doesn’t end up the same way my brother did. I wait for a phone call everyday to tell me he’s either in the ICU or dead.

I am loosing and have recently lost family to different forms and I remember having to nail in my mind that they have given up but never thought that they never cared or liked themself to begin. I am a doctor in my country, dual diagnostic of mental health diseases is an important topic to raise awareness and start community education, also the fact that health workers have +30% risk of mental diseases and substance abuse disorders. We have to start with ourselves to raise awareness in our communities.

Amazing video ❤️ It’s so important to talk about and destigmatize addiction. I’ve struggled with drug and alcohol addiction for 10+ years, relapsing occasionally. My family has addiction problems also. We can’t hold anger towards our significant others who are addicts when all they need is support.

I appreciate his honesty. People talking as people, no title as a police officer no title as a drug addict no title as a this or that. It's nice to see them try to answer each other's questions. The cop seems like he genuinely wants to know how he can approach those situations differently. The law is the law and you signed up to enforce it, yes. But try to remember that everyone is a person. Not all cops are bad. Systems are broken.

I’ve been addicted to opiates for about 8 years now. Definitely from past trauma but now my addiction is just a residual part of all that. I feel him on the feeling like it’s a mountain that you can never get over. Things feel so hopeless sometimes. Like why me ya know ? I keep reminding myself even now I’m still luckier than most people. Just gotta cowboy up and make it happen I guess.

basketball dairies is a movie based on a real addict and the point of the movie was to show how horrible it is and what he went through because of it. for this guy it did the opposite and goes to show how careful you have to be when producing these type of subjects to the media

Harm reduction doesn't get discussed as it should. It's not always possible to *quit* but look for safer substances. I know for me, Kratom saved my life.... Literally. 100%✓

Honestly I've kind of given up hope on life. It's no wonder with all my physical health issues (which I'm working hard on fixing) and mental health issues which are extremely treatment resistent, along with having a completely dysfunctional life due to growing up in a weird way. Anyhow what I'm doing is I suppose my own version of when people go on subutex or some such to still be on something but not be addicted. I've been on Oxy for years but I'm restricting my dosages to 10mg, never really gone above it. I honestly cannot cope with existing completely sober because of (very likely) untreated and undigagnosed adhd which I can't evaluate due to drug use (queue time is 10 months and I can't stay clean that long). What a fun catch 22.
