I was recently interviewed by Alisa Childers and I've taken that interview and broken it down into topical videos dealing with the 23 different claims made by the "progressive Christian" Ragamuffin TV. You'll see a new video EVERY DAY until the whole series is uploaded.
0:00 intro
0:18 to SKIP intro
Today's meme is about whether it is a sin to cuss or not. But because this is the first video in the series we will take some time to explain what this is about. I'd like to add that I know there are plenty of believers who disagree with me on this issue. I consider them my brothers and sister and I'm open to changing my mind but I have yet to hear an intelligent and biblical case that cussing is generally permissible
Here's a link where you can see EVERY video in this series (as they go up) • Answering Progressive ...
Here are the links to the long form interviews which are on Alisa's channel

I’ve noticed a number of comments below seeming to imply (mostly they don’t come out and say it) that because words are a shared convention cussing is not really a thing. Or that because many words are debatable no words are clearly problematic. Both of these views seem wrong to me. After all, they are using words with agreed upon meaning to communicate the idea that words with agreed upon meanings have no value content. That seems wrong. What else is off about this is that a person who holds this “words are just meaningless sounds” position wouldn’t ever be able to affirm that a statement like “Jesus is Lord” is morally good or that a blasphemous statement is inherently wrong. Sure, these words sound different in different cultures but I am not suggesting certain sounds are always bad. I’m saying that in a given culture, if there are cuss words, those ought not be casually used by followers of Christ.

Im speaking from the perspective of a Christian who does swear and i believe its not sinful nit because im progressive but because this is just what i derive from the bible from what ive read though i could be completely wrong and if so i should and will correct that. I also disagree with the kind of argumentation that all words are meaningless for the very reasons you listed however i disagree that words only have 1 universally agreed upon meaning so this is my argument. Because words have different meanings depending on the situation in which they are used and what cultures theyre used in. For this reason i believe a person should be held accountable for what they say, weather a cuss word or not by the meaning in which they use it. When people use replacement words the meaning is exactly the same as if they were to be swearing so if this is ok then swearing should be also. Now this doesn't mean that its ok in all circumstances. I think it can be used as an exclimation or emphasis but if its being used to demean or degrade or insult or curse... it is wrong just as any ordinary word would be if used in those contexts

I listened to a lot of Rock and Hip Hop growing up. I've been cussing like a sailor since I was 13; I'm 31 now. When I received the gift of the Spirit, I knew I had to control what came of my mouth. It's a hard habit to break. Thanks to the Lord, my speech has improved tremendously. I still slip up from time to time, but God willing, I will tame my tongue!!

I know we all have/had different conversion/born-again experiences, but I can honestly share that 2 things that immediately disappeared from my life straight after I got saved: lying and swearing/cussing. True story. I did not even try to deal with those things and I was surprised when I realized that those things were suddenly gone. It was truly miraculous. (ps - I have cussed A LOT since those early years in my backslidden state and cussing is WRONG! But now, our Merciful God has called me back to Him and I'm living for Jesus Christ again!! That sure seems to be the case, doesn't it? Jesus never told us, "you do you." He calls us to be different from.the world by being more like him. Very nice saying until Jesus was asked to explain it. Then he ruined it by showing his ingorance about the digestive system, virology and bacteriology. The pasage is one of the best evidence that jesus was not omniscient but ignorant. Errant like a human of this time. 15Peter said to Him, “Explain this parable to us.” 16“Do you still not understand?” Jesus asked. 17“Do you not yet realize that whatever enters the mouth goes into the stomach and then is eliminated?
@morlewen7218

@CDTV The problem is if Jesus is the biblical god then he is omniscient and told intentionally the untruth. Is it a sin to tell intentionally tell the untruth? It it a sin to endanger the life and health of another person by telling the untruth? Would a loving god endanger the life of people? Should parents tell their children to stop washing their hands despite their knowledge about the danger that unwashed hands can display? A loving omniscient god would have told that the washing of hand is not a pure ritual but a protection for body and soul. A fact that the pharisees forgot. It sems I would be more loving and caring than Jesus.
@dubsmith1969
@dubsmith1969 3 жыл бұрын
@@morlewen7218 He also said that he feeds the fowls of the air and sees a sparrow when it falls. Why should we be anxious about such things when our Father in heaven cares for us? As CDTV says, 21st century science wouldn’t apply to the people he talked to. They wouldn’t understand it. Jesus also didn’t come to tell us how the science of the world worked, but to Seek and to save that which was lost. I’m not sure what your argument is or how him not addressing 21st century science somehow changes the validity of his message or Jesus himself.

@@dubsmith1969 You are describing a not caring god. If a certain person in contrast to you is not aware of a danger then you should should not try to protect him? An omniscient being would know a way how to protect people. Parents try their best to protect their children from dangers they do ot understand. What would be the alternative? Let the kids die by drowning, electrcution, collissions with cars or intoxination? Let one child die so the others can learn a lesson? When the judge asked the parents why they did not try to protect the child would they answer that they loved their child so much but it could not understand the danger and therefore it is not their fault. Would any judge accept it? Christians are trying all the time to protect me from a danger I am not aware of. They are really passionate to save me. It seems they are showing more compassion and empathy than the biblical god.

Again Jesus called the crowd to him and said, “Listen to me, everyone, and understand this. Nothing outside a man can make him ‘unclean' by going into him. Rather, it is what comes out of a man that makes him ‘unclean.'” After he had left the crowd and entered the house, his disciples asked him about this parable. “Are you so dull?” he asked. “Don't you see that nothing that enters a man from the outside can make him ‘unclean'? For it doesn't go into his heart but into his stomach, and then out of his body.” (In saying this, Jesus declared all foods “clean.”) He went on: “What comes out of a man is what makes him ‘unclean.' For from within, out of men's hearts, come evil thoughts, sexual immorality, theft, murder, adultery, greed, malice, deceit, lewdness, envy, slander, arrogance and folly. All these evils come from inside and make a man ‘unclean.'” - Mk 7:14-23

This is an area I struggle a lot with. When I gave my life to Christ, my language was curbed quite a bit but then as life goes on and garbage happens that is tough to deal with, my language started to shift more like the worlds. Pretty soon I was unable to tell the difference between me and the world. I still struggle with this. I find that the more time you DON'T spend in the Word, the more you become like the world. The more time in the Word you are, the more like Christ you become and that is the only representation of Christ the world is going to see. So if you don't look, act and SPEAK different than they do, they don't see what the draw to Christianity is. As a church we then resort to these kinds of teaching that support our bad habits and we offer "fun" and "programs" to manipulate people into coming to church. This will ultimately hurt Christianity and give people a false sense of eternal security. Those are my two cents.

@@jourdinthedragon i wouldn't consider cursing progressive, it's not how Christians are called to behave, and the bible is very clear on that, also the bible is clear that it IS OK to drink, but not get drunk, and as far as smoking goes, it's addictive, and does nothing but cause serious lasting damage to your body, so yes, it is indeed a sin, it's easier statistically for people to quit heroin, than it is smoking. @@jourdinthedragon For some reason my reply didn't post, but someone else addressed most of your points. Cursing is not just about the intended audience, although we are always surrounded by witnesses. Does God want to hear your foul language? No. Besides, it defiles you. Foul language has an unclean spiritual source. As for progressivism, it is a political ideology that has tainted the Church. It is anti-God and seeks to portray the Bible as a book of fables and allegories. If you support progressives, you are partaking in the evil practices they seek to or have already institutionalized.
@jourdinthedragon
@jourdinthedragon 3 жыл бұрын
@@danstewart3319 that's why I asked. I do not consider myself someone who is progressive. In fact, I'm very strictly against progressivism as it's so tightly tied to postmodernist falsehoods. However, I do not believe cursing to be a sin, much for the same reason I do not believe in postmodernism: the conclusion is the premise. If you push the societal ethics (specifically since they are tied to western Christians) of cursing onto scripture, you might assume scripture is referencing cursing, but this is not likely as this concept, definitionally, didn't exist. Though, the definition of cursing could easily be applied to some language we see in the Bible: John using the term "dogs" and Jesus using the phrase "brood of vipers" seem to very much fit our definition of cursing. I also don't think drinking or cigar/pipe smoking on occasion to be sinful either (less health detriments than other things such as cigarettes or even sugar and pipe smokers who smoke less frequently actually statistically may live longer than non smokers).

Yet, Paul showed evidence that when needed to starkly contrast and awaken others, it is ok to get a little colorful, as when he was berating the circumcisers: "As for those agitators, I wish they would go the whole way and emasculate themselves!" - Galatians 5:12 Now that is a pretty darn stern and colorful way to wake people up!

And he said that what he had lost for the sake of Jesus was dung/excrement! The word he used was probably a more matter-of-fact word than it is for us, especially since they didn't have flush toilets (except in Rome?). They had to deal with it, cover it, or remove it, so they probably mentioned it more than we have to. But it was still probably something you'd rather not say, an unpleasant thing, and Paul said the things he had to give up for serving Jesus were counted dung to him. So that's another case of Paul departing from _polite speech,_ to say something he thought was very serious. It is attention getting.

In your intro at the 17 second mark, the narrative is “some ugly” and it appears simultaneously with the question “is it a sin to be gay?” I wonder how time consuming would it be to change the timing on that so that someone who is gay watching this would not interpret the coincidence as intentional and assume the two things are meant to correspond? I know this sounds critical and I absolutely do not intend for it to be so, just trying to be extra sensitive to those with whom I might like to share this with. “Is it OK to cuss?” is perhaps a bit too broad a question. How about the more direct, “Is it ever OK to say ?” Generally, I think Mike’s response tends to conflate issues and fails to properly parse nuances. Intent, context and the attitude of the heart all matter more than simply sounds produce by the vocal apparatus. It f I stub my toe, run into my bedroom, close the door and scream, "Oh that hurt!" have I committed a sin? Nobody but God heard me. Whether the words, " Oh, my God" are taking the Lord’s name in vain depends on whether I’m beginning a prayer or a movie review. And I would have far less problem with calling the canine excrement in my front yard "a piece of " than calling my neighbor "a piece of garbage". The former is just uncouth. The latter is a transgression against the law of love. And yet Christians tend to react more viscerally to the former than the latter.

The tongue of man is given much warning through out The Holy Bible. Jesus in essence teaches it's a reflection of the evil in the heart based on what comes out of the mouth. It also displays one's level self of control. I mean think about it. The thought goes into every word we use. So you can't tell me it was a slip-up or mistake. It had to be done with intentionality. @@AcidAdventurer the problem, as always, is that most of his theology has a heavy dose of western culture in it, if for nothing else than by virtue of being based off Roman cultural ideas passed down once the Church became the state church. There's not really any getting away from that as long as it's comfortable: people have to REALLY be pushed by the Holy Spirit to a breaking point before they usually are ready to dig in to actual (I'll say, 'tough') truths. I've see it a lot. Kind of comes down to what soil people are. Most people in the west are rocky soil, and tend to break/scatter when the hurricane comes. I've met very few Christians who have gone through actual, terrible tests and not come out with a deeper perspective of grace and a more accurate understanding of God's Word. Most don't, of course, come through them. They retreat or drift away from the Faith because the pain and ego death is too intense. But the few, very few who DO make it through tend to be some of the wisest and most loving people REALLY shining the light of Christ to those around them.

But again it doesn't matter whether you said it because Sugar has now replaced that bad word so does that mean sugar is now the bad word??.. But anyways.. Its all down to the individuals heart.. Another note about this: -Words are conveyer belts: they are how thoughts are not only moved around in your head, but also how they're moved from your head through your mouth to others. They are vessels for thought. (something I noticed: when I began to learn more of the complexities of language: more of root words, noticing more commonalities between suffixes and origins, etc.: not only was I better able to understand English and start to 'root out' meanings of phrases in other languages that I don't fully know, but also I was able to begin to think faster and better. Words matter!) -"For as he thinketh in his heart, so is he: Eat and drink, saith he to thee; but his heart is not with thee." (Prov 23:7)

Since my conversion I've stopped blaspheming just because the words God and Jesus have a meaning now and it seems not just bad, but even absurd to use them in that way. Using less swearing in general has flown from that naturally. I don't think swearing is bad in itself, but it's a symptom of an anger or pride that should not even be there in the first place.

What about instead of “gosh” we say “garsh” kinda like how Goofy does it?

My cousins shamed me for using those words when we were children, but it had never occurred to me that they had anything to do with "God" or "Jesus". I felt they were condemning me unfairly. I thought they were important, necessary words: interjections which expressed emotion or surprise, the same way "Wow!" or "keen!" worked. They were like comic book, Archie and Jughead words. I still think I was unfairly shamed, that I used the words innocently, but I see now that the history of those words is as they said it was. So I'm kind of in between opinions on them. However, "Jeez" really bothers me deeply, and I have had people use it as if they were trying to loosen me up and "help" me "get over" my problem with Jesus's name being "stretched" and disrespected so carelessly. That one is a more northern word, and I have lived in the cultural south most of my life, which I guess is why I didn't hear it as a child, although we lived in a place with a more northern culture, then. One alternative way to handle these words, is to try to avoid using them, but to realize that not all who use them, probably mean disrespect towards God, although others definitely do. In fact, we should probably realize that some people use them _instead of_ the words "God" and "Jesus", precisely because they are NOT those words, and they feel like they are innocent of offense. Because they are once or twice removed from those words, they function as the useful, casual interjections which express interest, surprise, and emotion. The fact that they are historically derived from them, may be true, but at least some people feel like they have used them to avoid sacrilege, and others are clueless about that aspect. We would probably do well to avoid using them, but I admit that sometimes the innocent "gosh" or "golly" seem to be the words that are needed. I avoid using them, but it is time-consuming to find another way of saying something.

@@kellygreen3943 Not making excuses. If we do, you are right; God does know our hearts. He knows the difference between an excuse and an examination of the problem, too. Not really in the mood to be condemned as if I was making excuses, sister. It has been a difficult night and day.

This was so well-explained. The poignant message was that we will account for every careless word uttered! I agree that we are called to do so much more than just not "cussing."

I was thinking the same thing, but I think the issue is more about what is currently considered by the masses as swear words. A day will come when current cuss words will be just normal words, but that day isn't here yet.

@Mike Winger You do understand that angels and demons (Elohim) are gods/demi gods, do you not? The Godhead is a title, it is not actually God's personal name? In fact, the average Jew or Gentile in the 1st century really didn't know the pronunciation of God's personal name? Only the Jewish high priest knew the name and spoke it once a year back in the 1st Century. Why is that? It is so that Man could NOT use it vainly which would be a sin. This is why it says in the OT that man will be judged by every idle, careless word that is spoken using His name. I equate the use of His personal name in vain to what God said about animals giving an account in the OT when they kill a human being. Not everything in Mans eyes is a sin in God's eyes. Is cussing in everyday conversation, idle, careless talk if you use it in every sentence coming out of your mouth? Yes, then I would agree that that type of behavior reflects poorly of that person. The occasional use of cuss words, I have no problem with because it gets the listeners attention and sometimes that's the only thing that will get a persons attention. Some people can be downright idiots so-to-speak and need a darn good thrashing around verbally on occasion, in my opinion, especially if they have an annoying habit that you've warned them about previously, yet keep doing the behavior. Sometimes a verbal thrashing IS love. The definition of obscenity is this: (of the portrayal or description of sexual matters) offensive or disgusting by accepted standards of morality, i.e. obscene jokes and decency or offensive to moral principles; repugnant. i.e. "using animals' skins for fur coats is obscene." in dictionary terms. I grew up with a legalizing parent and any time I used certain words that were close to cuss words, I would be condemned as it was a "form of swearing." I didn't like the legalizing then, still don't like it now, and I'm 55 years old. The other parent cusses, but does not use the words "goddamn it." I didn't know who/what to believe then, and it is difficult now. I do swear, but try to curb its use. And for someone in a teaching position to say the words, "Whatever that is," does not give enough credence to actually what idle, careless speech is in God's eyes to the listener--that in itself is bothersome to me, as it leaves things open ended, "to be determined later" and by then, it's too late to fix a bad habit. What I do know is that cussing does NOT affect my salvation, but it MAY determine what my duties are in heaven. Notice I said the word MAY here, because not everything Man considers SIN is actually SIN in God's eyes. Yes, agreed, we definitely should be giving thanks more often than we do. I am guilty of this along with many others.

I think this is more personal conviction. I’m very conservative and love the word but to add this as a rule or guideline seems legalistic. Sometimes you need a strong word to drive home your point. Or to express anger. This is not wrong (now using the Lords name in vain obviously is a sin because the Bible says so) Then it would turn into words like darn and shoot are prohibited as well. Then eventually you’ll have nothing left to express emotion or make a point.

Profanity is not necessary to express emotion or make a point. Tone as well as facial and audible expression and carefully chosen words are more than adequate to facilitate this. Profanity displays loss of control when angry (be angry and sin not), ignorance and a general lack of self control. You will give account for EVERY idle (lazy, useless, undisciplined) word (Matthew 12:36)… that is, unless you are calling Jesus a liar and are suggesting his words, warnings and commands should not be followed? If you do not intend to call Jesus a liar and are not suggesting his words, warnings and commands be dismissed and not followed, then you should change your mind (repent) leave that falsehood behind and THINK before you speak. (Read the book of James). Thinking then speaking is far more powerful and potent than emotionally charged bloviation!
