Matt, first up, apologies that I have missed this vlog. I knew you were on a break but assumed you were still travelling. I think you have recognised the issues affecting you and are taking the right steps to get back into the photography game. Whilst my circumstances are different from you in that I don't operate as a business, I think when you start creating work for others to see, the risk is you create for creation sake becoming a hostage to what ever algorithm/SM platform you are sharing your work on. I have found myself teetering in that area, so my approach is to stop, step back and concentrate on photographing what it is that makes me tick or to go and learn something else about photography that I haven't devoted time to and sooner or later the mojo is back and the creative juices begin flowing again. Look forward to seeing the van project progress and to see you hit the road around Oz

welcome back brother. I can relate. The one thing that seems to bring the joy back, is two things. Community and isolation. Being uplifted by others who have the same passion and not so much the technical side of photography but the artistic side, and then taking that passion alone into nature to meditate ESPESCIALLY when the camera is turned OFF. Blessings your way for a wonderful 2023.

Hi Matt, Working too hard can steal your passion. Taking the time away and finding joy in friends and family probably gave you a needed perspective on life that it sounds like you really needed. And, that time gave you a chance to reevaluate how to evolve your photography. Looking forward to seeing where it takes you.

So glad you have "turned yourself around" with a much needed break. Last time I contacted you, you were sounding really down so I am glad to hear your positivity is back. I am very much looking forward to your 2023 content Matthew. If I had to give you some advice, I would say go out with your camera, take some images without worrying about the technical side of it and just enjoy having a camera in your hand ! I guess that's what you were doing with that little Fuji in Thailand. Good luck for 2023 mate !

Good on ya mate. Do what makes ya happy and that will translate. I recently went to Madeira. Wasn't happy with the shots i got while there. I know buying new gear doesn't make things better. But picked up an x-t4 at a bargain price used with the sigma zoom. Got into London for street photography and fell in love again. I think what I realised is after a few years of photography now is that I love being out in nature, lakes, hills, mountains. But I think my photography love is street.

If the `great outdoors' becomes the end point, the `thing' itself then sure it might get tired every now and then. I think there's one higher thing. Why do you like being out in it and why do you photograph it. I mean the `collective you,' myself included because I'm always asking myself this question. Why are we inspired by it? What is it telling us?

Great to get your update, Matthew. Good on ya. I liked Kevin Nordstrom's comment about "then taking that passion alone into nature to meditate ESPECIALLY when the camera is turned OFF." Why? Rainer Maria Rilke said, "The only journey is the one within." In all our endless external pursuits, including all the exciting journeys "out there" (or even to the camera store), we are looking for enduring happiness and genuine well-being where it ISN'T. Then we wonder why in pursuing subscribers, sponsors, like button hits, or whatever, our soul feels sucked dry. Rilke had the answer long ago. As soon as we think happiness and well-being are out THERE somewhere and that is our sole or even our predominant pursuit, we are screwed. Which isn't to say don't go out there. But, when we do, don't lose the focus, the knowing, that the most important thing we can take with us is AWARENESS of which journey is which and how they relate to one another. Then we don't wander down some path -- as society and algorithms will have us do -- that takes us away from the inner journey. And we live excitement after excitement only to return to the same feelings of emptiness and lack of fulfillment, and maybe even disappointment in ourselves.
