This is another way of voting as a blind person but again, in order to vote in secret you need to request this from your local electoral authority 💔 if you need to do this the ‪@rnibuk‬ have template letters on their website. See the video I uploaded earlier today to see another device you can use that in my opinion would be the best way to do it but this is a close second. It’s so sad that these devices are not at polling stations by default. If you’re going to request it you have to do it sooner rather than later and at least a week before the election. This is quite a detailed video for anyone who votes like me ❤️

I'm glad this accessibility exists now - it should be available by default and not something you have to request in advance, but it being available on request is much better than nothing! For accessibility of this video, it would be better to have the captions show more than one word at a time. It's okay to have the current word highlighted, but just showing each word for less than a second as it's being said isn't actually very helpful for people who need captions.

According to the electoral commission website it is available by default. The list of required equipment at a polling place includes "a voting device for use by blind and partially sighted voters"

@@FoxDren according to the electoral commission website they have to have /something/ for blind people. There's no guarantee of this specific device, there are multiple potential ones. She made a different video showing a different design. So if you have a preference, you would need to ask which one they have and request the one you prefer. It's good that the electoral commission does require accessible voting for blind people, but I wouldn't rely on that. Things that are legally required to be accessible for disabled people are often not accessible in reality because people just assume no disabled people will actually show up. The RNIB recommends that blind people check in advance and request accessibility to be sure it will be there at their polling station on the day. Lucy works with the RNIB and is sharing their advice for other blind and partially sighted people. It's safer to check in advance to confirm that you'll be able to vote at your polling station, rather than turn up on the day and find the accessibility wasn't in place and miss out on voting or have your vote not be secret.

Why? We even have a better accessible systems in the Netherlands for people to use while voting if you’re blind

This presupposes that all polling stations have the necessary equipment. I've tried far more times than I care to remember to take my blind daughter to vote but not once has the equipment worked... and that's just the tactile voting itself. Upshot has been that she's never been able to vote in secret, I've always had to do it for her, just as well she trusts me to record her vote accurately.

I think Lucy said in her last video that all councils are required to provide this but unfortunately you have to request them in advance so the polling station has them. Really sorry your daughter hasn’t been able to vote in secret, hopefully some day she will be able to!

Was confused why anyone would need to request this so decided to go do some digging. Found a list of items a polling place is required to have on the electoral commission website which includes "a voting device to be used by blind or partially sighted voters". Given the legal requirement to ensure the vote is secret I am curious what these are and why you think they are not sufficient and must request additional equipment to vote in secret.
