Ps the masks were from the beginning of the band. In the beginning no one knew their names or what they looked like. They literally went by numbers only. It wasn't until after their 3rd album that they took off their masks. So from '99 to '04 it was all about the music not them. So they just continue with the masks and come up with new masks now and again.

This song was if memory serves written to deal with the feelings they had after Paul Grey passed away. Every death in the video is tied to a fear each member has and this video also Segway's into their new masks. The masks also allow the band members to give themselves to their music.

its both paul dying and joey leaving. (at the time) the 2 red "specters" are paul and joey and the video serves as a metaphor of alessandro and jay taking their lumps and their initiation into the band so they can earn the right to wear those masks for slipknot

@@IvyDoomsday the number 2 pops up frequently on TGC if you pay close attention. It was more due to Paul being #2 than loosing Joey. Joey didn't pass away until 2021 while there was constant friction after Paul died where Joey wanted to go straight to the studio but Corey wanted/needed time to decompress. Frankly Jay is one of the best things to happen to Slipknot in the past few years. As his positive vibes are simply infectios
@IvyDoomsday
@IvyDoomsday Жыл бұрын
@@maggot216 its both. Joey had left the band long before this came out hence why i said its Paul dying and joey leaving (at the time). He left due to his health issues and that basically prevented him from ever coming back so to the band, he was basically gone.

This song was made about the emotions felt from the passing of bassist and founding member Paul Grey and trying to move on without him. Also the deaths of the member are all symbolic to the members. Can't remember them all, but what I do remember. Sid eating his own fingers, he's a DJ, without them he's worthless, Chris Fehn has an intense fear of birds, Corey as has many front men had been known for having an ego. So he was blowing his old self away. The two people being stabbed were their new drummer and bassist Jey and V-man. That was their introduction into the band.

Taylor explained the song's meaning to The Pulse of Radio: "'The Devil In I' is really about the war inside yourself," he said. "Trying not to give into defeatism, trying not to give into negativity, trying not to give up basically. It's a struggle. It's one of the hardest thing you can do, is to give in to that side of yourself."
@Megan-xt1ni

I know what he said, but I always thought this song was a little bit about Paul’s wife. She really aimed her grief at the band and blamed them for his death publicly and it seemed unfair and hard to combat directly.

Im loving Metal Mondays. I love how knowledgeable you are about all music. The funny comments help too. Also from the begining each album has had different masks. So they keep evolving. Each person designs their own mask and basically it is how they feel inside. I think you are pretty much there with the meaning. When they are "killing themselves" they have the old mask on. So they are basically killing that version of them and this is the new one. Also the 2 in the wheelchairs that they are stabbing are meant to be the Bass player who died and the drummer who left.

Fun fact: the reason why Corey (actually all of them) wear 2 different masks is because they change masks every album so they killed themselves in their old masks and they perform the song in the new ones which is symbolic for destroying their “devils” and past (as you said at the end) Also the deaths themselves are very symbolic, Sid (the dj) eats is hands (what he needs for scratching), Corey blows his head off (what he needs for singing) and mick rips his face off (he’s most known for that look and has worn that mask since 2004 and still wears the same style to this day)

the masks started off as a gimmick, but they eventually ended up being an 'anti-image' statement, going against the grain of standard metal trends. They didn't fit into the norm, and they ran with it. Corey also said that the mask put a face to the person inside him that never had a voice.

@@SkateratDay15 It's funny people keep repeating that. It's not true at all. According to Corey, Clown started wearing masks to band practice before Corey even joined the band. The rest of the members then started to wear masks to practices and it just kinda went from there. It wasn't planned, and never had anything to do with anonymity. Most of the members were already in other bands before Slipknot, and Sid already had a pretty successful career as a DJ. Tons of people already knew who they were before they blew up and got big.

You should check out the behind the scenes/making of for this video to understand the full references for all of the violence. They were killing off their former selves in terms of their previous masks and the two that were rolling around in the chairs and ultimately virulently stabbed were the new drummer and bassist to the band. This was essentially and initiation and introduction to the band/fans. Their identities were still a mystery when the video dropped.

Cory said it was about the war inside yourself. The music video was directed by drummer Shawn Crahan and features the destruction of band members in various ways. Chris Fehn, for instance, is pecked to death by ravens, a fate he requested for himself as the percussionist suffers from a fear of birds. Sid Wilson, meanwhile, eats his arm and fingers in the clip, destroying the things most important for the DJ's role in the band.

i'd love to see you react to SNUFF by Slipknot and see how you analyze the lyrics :) I never liked reaction channel until I found yours, the way you analize ( falling in reverse by example ) is just amazing. You are killing it and even if I do not know you, the way you react to different genres with open mind and all... sign of a great human being !

I'd love to hear you interview Corey Taylor. He's immensely talented and well spoken. When you hear his solo work and Stone Sour, it's hard to believe it's the same guy singing. He's also been in the biz long enough that his son's band has opened for them and is making a name for himself.

I've been a fan of them since I was a teen and it's so nice seeing them get the recognition they deserve. Back in the day they were hugely popular, one of the best selling metal bands of the time, but very few adult metalheads liked them (or admitted liking them). It was kind of a thing back in the day - if a metal band was popular (selling a lot of records, played on the radio, etc), especially among teens, they were called sell-outs and looked down upon by metalheads. I'm so glad that attitude is changing and also that nu metal bands are starting to be recognized for the talent and influence they had/have. Also, this chorus still hits me just hard today as it did when I was 15. The rush of endorphins, or eargasm, or whatever you wanna call it... Usually I get them from very good metal screams, and since I got into rap early this year, a fast flow with some nice internal rhyme schemes will sometimes have the same effect...

Don't know if anyone said it yet but all the things that happened to the guys in the video is what there worst fears were. With sid it was being eaten, with Chris it was birds, with Corey it was being blown up etc... Really cool for a video

Knox, I respect you so much for your lyrical prominence and understanding. Your breakdowns are always so in depth and impressive. I *believe* I discovered your channel with Tom Macdonald, fell in love with your breakdowns with Twenty Øne Pilots and your knowledge and understanding of the rap game. ...that being said, I love seeing you get into the Metal scene and truly enjoying and respecting it. One day I'll be in a position to afford Patreon again and can come back to request some songs, but until then keep it up brother. Always fire. -Doja ...

Thanks for all these insightful reviews/reaction. However there's on band that is really missing here. We NEED more In Flames, honestly any song wold do, but i'd recommend something older from Clayman (Only for the weak, Clayman) or Come Clarity (Crawling Trough Knives, Leeches). IMO on of the first Melodic death metal bands also called Swedish death metal. Very poetic deep/dark themed songs just ripe for interpretations.

I love that you're playing around a bit more with different genres... how about a band that does the same? ;) I can strongly recommend you checking out the band *_Sleep Token_* (e.g., their song "Take me back to eden") - they got like 5 genres in there, even some hiphop. But enough of the spoilers, you're in for a ride!

There's a video/documentary about the band and the meaning of the masks and what the masks mean to each member. This video was a pivot for sure for the masks and the growth of the current/living members of the band. This band continues to grow and evolve, and so do their masks.
