I'm a carpenter in the middle of fifties. Woodworking is far from my major job. I may stand somewhere between hobby carpenter and expert. So my skill hasn't matured fully and I make many mistakes in the videos. I hope you would forgive me generously.
A late bloomer carpenter's woodworking diary. This is the motto of my channel. I enjoy making furniture and videos. And using my leisure time I make videos and share how I make and my idea that comes to my mind. Those are sometimes childish and sometimes not too bad. What I want is you just enjoy watching one or two of my videos and fly to other channels better than mine.
I'd like to progress my woodworking skills through struggle to make furniture and videos. And I hope those can help you encouraged for woodworking.

For those watching this amazing jig video, two major safety warnings: 1-never use miter gauge and rip fence at once (2:05), kickback risk; 2-do not remove wood pieces near the blade with your hand while it is still spinning (4:20). Despite that, amazing jig, I will indeed make one.

7:14 a no-no in my books too. Moving the wood back over the spinning blade in the wrong direction. Even if you think you’ve got it all, not good practice at all. Decent idea for a jig but unsafe as an instructional video.

After I saw your hand thru the inside of the box, I put a handle midway thru the box when I built mine. BTW, it works fantastic. Also before the final gluing, I assembled it and wasn't happy with the clearance on the fence, so I took it apart and trimmed the saddle pieces until I had it perfect. Thanks

First, Love the idea, and will be making one for my shop! Second, I am with the others on the safety issues. 1. No riving knife 0:46 2. Reaching so close to the blade (I yelled at the screen...) 3. Using BOTH the fence, and the Miter gauge 2:08 is a real no no. 4. Blade way too high. (The teeth are in the wood way less time than if the blade is lower, and increased odds of kickback with it high) I am only re-stating this so that others watching and learning from you might learn how dangerous these are. Thank you for making the video, and sharing your great idea. Please be safe, and teach safety to the new guys watching you.

@@DanChampionJr the same amount of teeth will be in the material regardless of blade height. The lower the blade is in the material the more likely it is to lift the material with equal or more chance of kickback. The teeth will be “pushing” upwards on the material as the blade rotates and passes through to make the cut. The higher the blade is the more it pushes down on the material on the operator side, giving some mechanical hold down advantage as it rotates through the material being cut. Yes, more exposure is more danger, so there is definitely a point of being too high for the need at hand, but kickback is equal or greater with a very low height where only the teeth showing through the kerf. Both work, both are dangerous in similar and different ways. Common sense and knowing your tools and physics goes a long way in staying as safe as you can while working with dangerous machinery.

I'm definitely building one of these. You can put some finishing wax on the parts of the jig that make contact with the fence and table to help it slide better. Also, I think it would make sense to add a small piece of wood in the hole to be able to grab it without having to put your whole arm inside, might make things more convenient.

I dare not say anything, my thumb got 1/2 inch 12mm too close to the blade last month, it's healing slowly, but at least I can still count 10 digits without fractions !!

Nice jig, made from solid wood instead of the expensive plywood. But use dry wood, and as soon as the jig is done protect it from moisture getting in the jig, avoiding warping.

Be careful when using both the rip and the cross cut fences together, my friend. The piece between tha saw disc can the rip fence can kickback at you.

I think I will build this for myself. The only addition/modification I would think to make would be to drill some shallow holes to place a 1" dowel inside towards the back to make a push handle with so you aren't having to reach all the way through to pull it back and forth.

Love this jig. I will be making myself one. That said...you might want to look into getting a riving knife to sit behind your saw blade. Prevents nearly all kickback.

Not just how close your fingers were to the blade a few times, but how high you rose that blade at 0:40 gave me the chills. Please do not get too confident and have a stupid accident.

Regarding the appearance of your fingers being too close to the blade I would submit to the other commenters that we can't tell how close they are because of the camera angle. Even so there's not one of us who over reaches on occasion whether its our table saw, router table drill press etc. etc. Foolish yes but all of of us take chances. Some have said when we become very use to our equipment tendency to take chances occurs more often than not. Always best to err on the side of safety. Just sayin'

How not to use a table saw. Your cut with the offcut between the fence and the blade is so dangerous. If you keep working that way you will discover how dangerous kickback is.
