I'm Going To Beat This Beautiful Timber Framing Chisel With A Sledge Hammer
That's right, I created this tool and now I'm going to test it out by beating it with a sledge hammer. I am looking to see how tough the handle construction is and how well it holds an edge in dry elm and osage orange.
Stay tuned.

Impressive! That's the best thing I've seen on KZfaq in quite some time. I'm considering making my own from pre nineteen seventy eight leaf springs, but that thing is so pretty you got me interested. I found two very old chisels in PA 1.0 and 1.5 pair with no handles and some heft. I remember you talking about this very thing beating the shit out of a new chisel to test it. This was back when you just bought the bandsaw. Sadly, I don't own one yet, but it will be sooner than later. You said once stuff was right and ready, you would torcher tests the new tools to see if they held up to old school standards. I figured 1880 to 1920 were some quality years, and there it is. Well done, sir. very well done.

Good demo Jim! Sometimes you gotta' be bad to be good. Sometime i'D LIKE TO SEE A COMPARISON WITH THE Wood, Rawhide, and Dead blow mallets. Remember that the bounce robs energy and that is why I feel the dead blow hammer drives better, just sayin'. Have a great day Jim and thanks again for testing a fine product. Oh by the way remember that energy transfer is mass times velocity squared so a light hammer will destroy the handle faster than a heavy one. The big hammer has more momentum but the light hammer has greater "horse power " if you get the drift, so to speak.
@TheTradesmanChannel
@TheTradesmanChannel Жыл бұрын
This test with the sledge is pretty brutal. You can feel the force transfer through from weight alone. The idea with the wood and rawhide is that it is a softer material, takes some of the abuse away from the handle.
@KrugerrandFarms
@KrugerrandFarms Жыл бұрын
@@TheTradesmanChannel I realize that but at the end of the day we have to do work with that fine tool, ie. we need to remove wood in appropriate places and that is where the dead bljow comes into play with out damage to the tool.

Wife decided she didn't want to ad on. Our oldest will be 18 in a few years, Emma will be a year behind him. She figured she'd rather do other things with the money. To be honest I'm enjoying making the tools quite a bit also. That said I am trying to figure out another good timber project. I'm considering tearing down the pit of despair and rebuilding it as a timber frame. Not sure yet.

@TheTradesmanChannel The pit of desparity should be left as is. Doing something with six sides versus four or maybe five could change things up. I saw this odd old rafter roof design the other day that was almost looking like a spiral inside those huts or yurts, and it bolts onto a wood deck with steel straps over a stone bed. Posts on the load points going into the ground. Iron straps on the plates. It looked cool.

Good vid, Jim. I was shocked to watch the B roll and see you plugging in an electrical appliance. I thought "WTF", I figured you had an oldtime black smith shop where everything was done by hand. hehe. Nice looking piece of steel and it sure does look and perform durable. One think I noticed on the cutting edge was a few perpendicular honing marks to the edge. Did you lap the cutting face with1000grit or higher paper AND a few strops on a cowhide?
