I'm Having Problems With Growth!

Just a Few Acres Farm

Just a Few Acres Farm

Күн бұрын

Today I'm having problems with growth. Growth under my fences is shorting them out, the pigs are getting bigger, our Dexter herd is expanding, and I'm wondering whether our farm operations should grow. But my past profession has taught me that (contrary to the American ideal) growth is not always good.
Note:
-We do not offer farm tours
-We do not ship our farm's products
-We do not sell live animals

I read an article recently that stated farming was an occupation destined for elimination due to mechanization and AI. I hope and pray that is not the case. A better future would be one where family farms replace industrial farming all over the country and everyone can enjoy the benefits of locally grown food. It would be better for the environment, general health and the economy as well.

Greed and avarice, redundancy aside, is not the "American dream sold to everyone." The ability of the individual to pursue life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness is the American dream. The individual gets to determine what makes them happy, it isn't constrained by government. If hoarding material possessions is your goal, that's your right; if it isn't, that's your right too.

I have had amazing results with "the big stinko". You probably know about it, but just in case. It is a 2 1/2 gallon glass jar with a top that lets in flies. Hang raw bacon from the top and let it tough the water filled 1/2 way up with some dish soap. I have had to empty that once a day for 4 days filled to the brim with dead flies. At that point, forget the bacon, just leave 1/4 full of dead flies, add water to 1/2 and some soap and you are on your way. We had to keep it 20-30 feet away because it lived up to its name, but it must have cleared flies for at least 300 feet in all directions. No flies after a few days. We buried the dead flies in a small pit and covered with dear after each dumping. It would at least clear your barn area of flies. Amazing Rich

It makes sense on the beef. Years ago when we got raw milk from the uncles dairy, the cows were pastured more than today. So certain weeds, made the milk smell, and bad taste so it’s not a stretch on beef. Actually we purchased parts of cattle for beef then, so a common practice was to take the steer off pasture and for one month just grain feed him. This is how beef was raised for personal use, in my childhood

I saw another youtube farmer use chickens to reduce the fly larvae and parasitic pressure by having chickens pasture on the fields a few days after the cows. You throw chicken feed on the cow patties, chickens eat whatever larvae is present, chickens acts as a dead end host, and they get a yummy protein snack!

I was working on a job in Kentucky. We had to use walkie-talkies to communicate with the Crain operator because we were out of site for hand signals. Problem was the only channel we could use was being used by some local workers like a phone. We tried telling them we only needed the channel every once in a while but for safety reasons, we really needed the channel clear for those few moments. They ignored us. My coworker/ friend frustrated one day when we couldn't hear the crane operator 100 ft from us but could hear Billie Bob talking to Bobby Bill loud and clear My fiend tried getting the channel for 10 min but they refused. My friend ended up cursing one of them who mistook him for his friend. Friend "Hey, why don't you just goto hell?" Bb- "Is this Billy?" Fr- "yeah this is Billy & why don't u just fk yourself? Bb- "gee Billy. Just don't sound like you. I don't know why u would say something like that." Fr- "i said because I meant it. Truth Is I never did like u. I think ur a pos " Bb- "well gee bill. That's not very nice. I don't know what to say." Fr- "don't say nothing Bob! Just stfu. We can settle this when I see you later.. So for now you can stick it up your az, go fk yourself with it, most important; STFU AND GET OFF THE CHANNEL ! We'll settle this later!" He was so mad. He was looking at the walkie talkie he was yelling in like he wanted to reach through it and grab the guy on the other end. We were laughing so hard. He got the line cleared too. No offense , but you aren't from Louisville & your dad isn't named Billie Bob by any chance?

A natural remedy for flies/biting flies, tics, and mosquitoes is the use of plain old powered sulfur. My Uncle Bob use to keep a sock filled with powdered sulfur near the door on his land in Conroe Texas. All you had to do is whack your legs and arms with the sulfur sock and insects would run the other direction. Powered sulfer is pretty cheap and a little goes a long way.. So why not try it on your cows and see if it helps with your fly issue. You could run the cows through a chute that lightly powders them in specific areas. It's just a suggestion...have a great day!

Back in the 80's I used a cattle oiler to help reduce the bothersome flies on the cattle. Easy maintainence and cost effective too. I only needed one oiler for my 26 cows. It was easy to move it to different pastures as I would hook a drag chain to it or lift it with the front end loader.

Then I got to the point I couldn't stand the clutter, but when I tried to sell I took a HUGE loss (surprise, surprise) and finally realized 'stuff' didn't cut it. I reduced my consumption, spent some on experiences & people that were important to me, and socked as much away into retirement accounts as I could. The sustainable farming practices work so long as outside influences don't upset the apple cart. Usually somebody thinks they can do more with your land and the process to take it begins. Zoning, property taxes and land use revisions are just the tip of the iceberg when it starts.

Hahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha, I am amazed at the steps needed to start old tractors. I love the sounds that each thing does as you run thru the steps. Even the putter of the tractor as it starts. THE STORY YOU TELL ABOUT WORKING WITH IN A SET THING TO CONTROL YOUR GROWTH IS TRUE. I run a small business, I like the income it makes, the vacations I take, the bills it pays. All at my comfortable pace. Everything is paid for, my son, materials get paid for as I go, I set aside some money for vehicle repairs and tool maintenance (or up grading tools) I love to see someone else is doing the same thing. A lot of my friends, including my competitors, call me nuts, or tell me I'm holding back. I like what I do, I like the pace I work at. I love it!!

Thank you Pete for your videos, you make my day with your humor. I am originally from Buffalo NY and many times traveling with my dad to Elmira for his job and pass a farm and smell cow 💩 because back then NY was a major milk producing state.

Love your sustainable business plan. To stay healthy, I suggest that you eat to satiety of your own animal products.

I forwarded this video to my friends and family. Your spot on. Running the treadmill for more stuff is crazy. I’m 51 and spent my early adulthood consuming. Man I wish I had invested that money….

We raise and sell beef cows directly to consumer. As we have grown both my wife and myself are full-time employed by the farm. Our best fit for us is 6 cows per month slaughtering. We have hit 8/month and it just becomes too much work and the fun in farming is lost. We've had people try to get us to get bigger. I think people think it's the American way. For us, bigger wasn't better. We were on the verge of needing an employee yet trying to figure out how to pay them.

I went from one job i hated to another that I don't particularly enjoy but don't hate. I guess I live vicariously through pete putting in hours and hard work to something he's passionate about.

Malathion, beer & honey. Mix and spray on an old sheet of plywood lean it by the barn. I have seen days where there is a row of dead flies 3 inches deep at the bottom of the plywood.

Retired at 56 and just tip toeing into small farm life. A few dozen chickens we sell eggs from, a large garden that provides income from the local farmer's market and a couple dozen honey bee hives that bring in some income. I agree with your observations regarding growth. I retired from work so ensuring that this hobby farm doesn't become another "job" is challenging. My situation is likely different from many in that my retirement income provides for our "needs", the farm provides for our meager "wants".
