It's so nice that you're enjoying gouache! I love the medium, I can achieve either perfect flat tones or painterly styles! A suggestion: clean your brush in paper towels before rinsing, it will pollute your rising water less!

I think you've ordered from szal-art before, so if you ever place another order with them I'd really recommend the renesans gouache color "Scarlet Vermillion" (pr254 I think) It's an opaque, matte, bright fire-engine red! Really lovely color. I'd also slightly recommend the "Chrome Yellow Orange" the hue, an ever-so-slightly-earthy bright orange, is very lovely, and the pigment is one I've never seen before (P05, don't think it's lightfast in watercolor/gouache but idc) but the paint is kinda streaky. (also my fav gouache brushes are the renesans 1001 series also from the same website. I get private label vibes from the brushes but idk where else to get them that's more convenient for an american like me.)

thank you so much for the recommendations! i didn't even know renesans made gouache. i'll keep that in mind and take note of that. :D

I love your limited palette selection! I also have the Shinhan Cobalt Turquoise - not many brands make this color in gouache! Very smart to also add in the ultramarine -- I've tried using Cobalt Turquoise in a CYM palette, and the problem is you can't get a deep dark with it (that's assuming only three colors). After experimenting with several brands, I definitely see why Sarah Burns prefers gouache that's the perfect consistency straight from the tube with a barely-dampened brush (she always dries her brush after washing it.). I know she's been getting really into her dried gouache palette lately though; I need to watch her recent video with the update. I just can't deal with dried white though. But yeah, with Holbein you do need to add a tiny bit of water to get it to flow, and that tiny bit is very hard to get right! And one of the best effects, I think, is to do gradients. Ultimately, I think of gouache as being like oil or acrylic, but without the hassle of the cleanup of those mediums. Another great gouache channel to check out is Visual Mind.

Oh no... Welcome to the dark side via Sarah Burns.... You might want to try out Schmincke Akadamie gouache and Holbein gouache. They are all so affordable and great for painting. Imagine a 60ml tube (Schmincke) costing about 150thai baht.

Do they have Holbein gouache in Thailand? I love it just as much as W&N. Also, if you can get DaVinci gouache at a decent price there, it might be worth the investment since their smallest tube is 37ml. W&N, Holbein and DaVinci are my favorite gouache brands. Daniel Smith recently released a gouache line, but I haven’t tried it yet.

i haven't seen holbein gouache in thailland, no. but i get most of my supplies from jackson's. sadly no davinci for me. i know they're affordable but their shipping price to thailand is just insane and not worth it. i'll just stick with jackson's. thank you for the recs though, i appreciate it!

I bought some of the Shinhan gouache based on the recommendation of Sarah Burns too.😄 I love the price and the creamy texture, but almost all of the red/pink/violet colors are not lightfast. That magenta is rhodamine, which is a fluorescent lake pigment and has the lightfastness of Opera Rose. If you use it in a sketchbook or scan your art, that won’t matter. If you can buy your reds/pinks/violets from another brand, then Shinhan is a great and affordable option. Thanks for the video, Vee!😘
@PaintinHiding
@PaintinHiding 11 ай бұрын
considering that lightfastness is the main difference between 'designers gouache' and 'artists gouache, i don't really mind that these aren't lightfast but you're absolutely right. it's easy enough to just get the lightfast version from other brands. thanks for bringing up the lightfast topic!

I so want to try goauche but I'm worried bc I haven't mastered wayercolor yet. I love using oil paints and struggle with acrylics, which makes me think I'd struggle with gouache, too. 😔
@PaintinHiding
@PaintinHiding 11 ай бұрын
tbh i used to use oil paints back in the day. i cant remember if i've ever tried acrylic or not but gouache is a great in between watercolour and oil. i think if u have the funds then you might find gouache a more suited medium. honestly, it's just a matter of trying and figuring things out.

Wait! You wait around for your watercolors to dry?! Use a hair dryer! Also, I LOVE the Holbein Iridori gouache. I don't use any other kind now. Well, no, that's a lie. I still use my Himi/Miya jelly cup gouaches for studies or to practice out how I want a painting to look before I commit to certain colors and my good quality paper, but for the actual finished pieces, Holbein Iridori. You can use the gouache like watercolors, using a lot of water to lay down a thin, transparent wash to give a nice underpainting glow to the rest of the work too. And honestly, there's no right or wrong amount of water to use, it all depends on the effect you want. You just need to play around to find out how you best like to use it! I'm glad you decided to try gouache, you're going to have a lot of fun!😁
