I would *definitely* appreciate more gouache reviews. You're so good at presenting workarounds for problems and limitations that arise, Kimberly, that I finish your videos with a better approach to any kind of medium. I love that. And the paw prints on the scarf.... lmao.

Thank you so much, that is exactly what I was hoping to hear. I don't like sugar coating problems and I do my best to put forth solutions, hoping that it will help fellow artists have an easier time with tricky products. I can't describe the painting of those paw prints as anything less than **joyful** ... then watching them all light up under black light :D :D :D

I dedicate the cat painting to Eve Bolt (with Opera Pink in her honor). It's all your fault I bought these lol. Those darn dangerous news updates :D You can find these paints on Jacksons at www.jacksonsart.com/en-us/shinhan-professional-designers-gouache?___store=jacksonsart_us&acc=c0f168ce8900fa56e57789e2a2f2c9d0 Happy painting everyone!

Hehehe! Oh no! XD It's a lovely painting, I love it! And it made me so happy to see that Opera light up under the UV light! You know it's a good one when they do that. It was super interesting to see the unique pigments of the Sepia and Raw Sienna! I had to grab a few of their PWC range for the same reason; they have some unusual pigments in there. "Unusual" often means "not lightfast", but it's still fun to have them in one's collection :3

I was so surprised to see you using a sort of watercolour type flooding technique with wet paper as a gouache technique, years ago learning to use this type of paint we used a special rather expensive art board for gouache and were expressly taught not to do anything like that as the board would never flatten out again. Lightfastness did not come into it as designs would be photographed for colour separations, we had to work especially hard on smooth gradients, and had to be able to do a good almost photographic rendition of something made of stainless steel! Reds were always very problematic to get paler shades, and darker ones not a lot better. Oh, my we got through a lot of white gouache! We never ever used them from pans and were encouraged not to let whatever we mixed dry as it would become streaky, so every segment in a particular shade would have to completed in a session. All paint would be mixed to a thin cream consistency and if it thickened during the session moistening the paintbrush would help. At one time nearly all advertising or graphic art was made with gouache, originals hardly ever saw the light of day and were not regarded as artworks. From time to time some of these pop up having been hidden away for half a century or so and still look as fresh as when they were made, providing they have been kept dry. Gouache was used globally, not just in the west, and aside from advertising were used in cartoon animation. The Japanese versions were very highly regarded. In Europe Talens we’re the best you could get, and they came in designers and artists varieties, artist mainly using them for art illustration purposes. Colour series are usually designed to give consistent shades when mixed with whites to enable success with bigger projects, and to meet with spot colour print needs. Of course now mostly digital has taken over, but I think you can still tell the difference, there is no digital equivalent of an artfully flicked brush. I especially liked your rendition of the bunny’s eye! Things changed very fast when they did and the digital era happened, I am so glad people are rediscovering gouache, which can be really rewarding and give such lovely results. I learned these skills in a large graphics studio where we also had very early Apple machines attached to an immense Letraset data bank for font creation, the old rubbing up with the new. My lecturer confidently anticipated the death of paper! But here we are with more paper and paints than we can make up our minds over! Another exercise I just remembered was a smooth pink to blue gradient like the sky at sunset…a really killer to render to perfection, but your flooding technique might just have managed it in about a 10th of the time we took to get it right!

It is such a time saver to use the flooding method to fill areas, we especially have that freedom on watercolor paper or a good heavy mixed media paper that you could flatten between a stack of books. I'm glad we're so free to do things differently with the huge variety of supplies nowadays, it's so interesting hearing about how things use to be!

I don't use Gouache much but when I do, I too use it out of the tube! I absolutely love the Cat piece Kim... Thank You for sharing your knowledge, as always. I love your non-fuss approach and consistent videos with honest information....

Thank you! I neglect my gouache collection and am trying to fix that a bit. Dusting them off to swatch and compare them sounds like fun. Most of them did poorly when dried in pans, and me being so used to the convenience of watercolor pans I just forget about them when I've set aside tubes. Every time I enjoy the freedom of reversing light to dark order I realize I should try doctoring up a few of my favorite gouaches to be pan ready so I use them side by side with my transparent watercolors more often. Happy painting :)

I was so worried when I saw how separated some of those tubes got! Although I'm glad they combined back together fairly well, it's good to know about the risk. I don't usually go for Gouache, but I think that's just me not wanting to be out of my comfort zone & experiment with them. Between your super helpful analysis & how gorgeous both of these critters turned out, I just might have to try a tube or two! Thanks so much!

Aww... Your illustrations were so darned cute! I'm somewhat fascinated with the idea of gouache. I have only the one really cheap set, but I'd like to get it out and play with it again. I'd really like to try the M. Graham. Good information, as usual. Thank you. :-)

Yes please for more gouache reviews. Thanks for this one. I have some of the Pass tubes and love them so this may be good for me to use. QUESTION? Does the colour lift when you rub with your finger once it is dry? Thanks!
@KimberlyCrick

No lifting at all until it gets wet! With dry hands or other papers nothing comes up when I rub over the dried paint, the binder is pretty good :)

Interesting, informative, critical, sharp and creative, all I expect especially not being familiar with gouache (except for knowing it and watching lots of youtubes etc.) at all. I think I have some starters kits, a W&N designers gouache and a Holbein and I have some Talens in little glass pots (but I even don't know if that is considered gouache?) You gave me enough stuff to think about. And I love the comments (I usually read comments under your youtubes or recently when you reacted at Eve Bolt's). All together I keep learning and enjoying to gather anekdotes, just nice things to know and good knowledgde about paint, pigments, lightfastness. Great!

Big yes to more gouache reviews! I'd be particularly interested in your thoughts about Maimeri paints as this brand rarely gets any attention. I remember you praised their gouache on your site and that got me curious. I also have some of the MaimeriBlu watercolours you recommended and I enjoy them. I find your opinions to be very reliable - thank you for providing them!

Just wondering if you would be doing more reviews on granulation. Interest in finding on how to get rivulets effect from mixing different colors. It seems that rivulets can happen to some light colors, not just dark colors such as black and brown. Thank you for all your reviews, deeply appreciated!

I have a video in progress regarding PR108 Cadmium Red's granulation and color separating mixtures. It is probably the lightest and brightest color I know results in that effect aside from the usual textural blacks, browns and blues. If there's a certain color you've seen have that reaction you're looking for more info on, let me know what it is :)

I was about to buy a bunch of tubes of this paint but I'm so grateful that I found your post first. That funky watery trash in the turquoise colors is a huge bummer to see. I 2as excited to try this paint but I'm not so sure now. You always do a great job of telling it like it is instead of trying to be a good little you tuber. I respect that a great deal and I'm certain I'm not alone. Keep it up!
