I think it is neat that in the Netherlands they have a program for people to do this. There are many buildings here in the Us. that i think they could turn into apartments so the buidling are not sitting falling apart or say people squatting in them and messing them up. I think it is neat.
@princess_niya2407
@princess_niya2407 5 ай бұрын
The reason why you can’t just do this in the US is because the building still has to meet the code based on the state in order for it to be livable for someone, hence why the building just sit there, and it’s way more expensive trying to convert an existing building (office building, hospitals, schools, etc.) in to an apartment building
@patriciabritton5917
@patriciabritton5917 5 ай бұрын
@@princess_niya2407 I understand what your trying to say but many buildings in the u.s will sit and Rot because of certain codes. Yet they will build all these new buildings and pay to demolish buildings they could redo . Not quite sure how that is cheaper. I think all the red tape in America is what causes such a shortage of housing.
@princess_niya2407

@@patriciabritton5917 I think it’s cheaper to just build a whole new building instead of converting or remodeling a building because it’s less things you have to work around/ remove to meet the proper codes to have a livable space, kinda just how I someone was to buy an abandon house the cheaper route would be to just demolish the house and start from scratch

I’ve seen a few people turn old schools into houses or apartments in a few places in the U.S. Expensive depending on the state of the building but doable with grants and money of course.
@mad4hats797
@mad4hats797 5 ай бұрын
@@patriciabritton5917also another reason they sit and rot is because the banks don’t want to pay on them anymore. They let them fall apart and someone buys the land eventually and gets a loan from the same bank and builds something profitable on the land.

There's definitely some negatives to this like not having a decent shower and the cooking area isn't the best, but overall this is so unique and, in my opnion, such a great experience for short-term living for a young person or couples. I wish the US had programs like this. It would probably help low-income folks get housing opportunities as well as helping them save up money for another place.

I knew a woman in the UK who lived in an old school building for similar reasons. I think she was there for about 2 years before they tore it down. My grandmother's old high school was closed down in the 1970s (it was built in the early 1900s) and they never tore it down, but someone finally bought it and restored it into apartments about 10 years ago. It's absolutely beautiful now.

Happens all the time, they always take old elementary schools in the city I live and turn them into apartments. My friend lived in one and I was so jealous of their coat closet. It was the old huge long coat room that the classroom had with all the hooks . Even had a chalkboard that the landlord never took down.

I wish the state I lived in did that. I live in a small town in South Georgia . The amount of empty abandoned schools we have is sad. Not just schools too but so many empty buildings . Those were properly converted into residential units with bathrooms and kitchens and so forth. They do conversions all the time in most cities. They take old office buildings and schools and hotels and turn them into luxury condos. An old 1940s granite and marble office building near the white house that I used to work in is now an Embassy Suites.

The incentive is to make sure that everything is locked up, even though the space is not used in years, because American homeless people are trashy and have drug problems. Maybe in some more civilized country with somebody to oversee things and to make sure that tenants are responsible and not trashy.

@@ceeset5472 Many of the homeless are mentally ill, so their problems with survival won't be erased. For those who aren't mentally ill or addicts, programs already exist to temporarily house them (shelters). And "low income families" are usually welfare and Section 8 dependents, whose mentality is that of entitlement (you may even be one of them). I've seen the types of people those buildings house and I wouldn't want them all over every neighborhood, as I prefer a clean, peaceful and safe neighborhood. No one should be reproducing if they can't support their offspring - it's called RESPONSIBILITY.
@ceeset5472
@ceeset5472 2 ай бұрын
@stephaniereneerose First of all , you are very wrong and judgmental. You have a closed minded mentality. You tend to put every person of low income or section 8 in the same box. You may not care about people finding very affordable rent, because you can clearly afford a 1000-2000 dollar or more on a house or apartment. From what I can tell you seem like the type to vote for Trump because you might be a republican or for Biden because he doesn't care about low income or poor people. To be honest they both just care about the rich people. You don't know me or where I live, but I do believe, that everybody, regardless of color or background, deserve to be able to find a nice place or a rebuilding of poorly conditioned low income/section 8 places to afford and be comfortable just like you. Not everyone who lives on based on your income or section 8 are all the same. We are just as educated and respectful, and want to take care of our home or apartment just as much as you. And lastly the homeless regardless of their mental capability deserve a place that they can call home. You may not care that thousands of homeless people are out of homes but there wouldn't be so many if the rent was affordable or they build more affordable places for everyone

In one of my old work areas an elementary school had been converted to residential use, senior living I think. Each classroom had by area convention (code?) two doors to the hallway. One at the teachers desk end of the room and one at the other end. Each classroom was divided into an efficiency (or studio if you prefer that designation) apartment. The old classrooms had at least one door exiting to the outside of the building. Each apartment had one outside exit door also and a very small concrete slab a a patio. They may have added an outside door to the units that did not have a preexisting outside door. They can do this in my country (USA) right now by having the live in person as an employed caretaker. In writing as part of their duties that they live on the property. Requiring they live on the property exempts them from income tax for the amount of money they would have paid for rent. If your employer provides housing, but not a job requirement that you live there, then the 'free" rent is considered income and taxable.

One summer i was a janitor at this run down school from the 70's, they built it using salt water so it all went to hell structurally over the years. buckets scattered around to collect water from the ceilings etc. But as a janitor that summer when everything was empty was such a mood, i would gladly have worked as a janitor there for the rest of my life tbh. Hahahahaha yeah like I mentioned in the video, I never showered there. There are schools which have the old PE class showers. If you get those you’re pretty good, but this was ehhh not so great

Wish there was a program like that here, so many people on the street because they cant afford the high rents. Lots of old/empty building we could turn into “affordable” living but most get bought up and turned into more expensive/unaffordable apt/condos

What a tiny gym. I like the idea of paying a fee for these unused buildings.

I would most def make this in to a beautiful house. Brake some walls, and make them bigger rooms.

Lot's of old Schools for sale around USA for DIRT cheap ... with full size gym basketball courts, etc ... unfortunately the heating/cooling bills are more than mortgage payments on a multi million dollar house.

That’s what I was afraid of. Lucky for me I didn’t have to pay for the heating bills. It was an all in price for me! In my new house I do have to pay the bills separately

They don't do this in the states but this would be amazing. I would have loved this and can not believe you say it's affordable? It's unbelievable and unmanageable in the USA. Great idea love it and I wish the states would adopt this idea !!!❤❤❤❤❤

We Americans have to do things they do in other countries or else most will be homeless and few will be housed .

this would be a great program for the UK as we have so many empty places that just sit empty and the price of housing is so expensive would help a lot of people

That is actually a great concept i wish my country would implement in America we have a big homeless problem in an every city all over we have abandoned buildings that eventually you get squatting and all kind of illicit activity going on inside them great video.

I think it would be neat if the US did this . I know where a abandoned mansion is and it has so much opportunity for things like this.

This living situation is a great idea. Good for the property owners to keep their buildings from being squatted and or used for illegal activities. Both can cause more problems for them. It gives someone an affordable, temporary housing. I'm assuming it's also safer than alternative temporary housing.

There is a warming center and temporary quarters for the homeless in Macon, GA at the old Brookdale Elementary School. The United Way and other community leaders began this when a homeless person froze to death. It's a concept to be expanded on. Turtletown, TN has a school that's sat vacant for 20 years. Too bad someone isn't this proactive. It'd make a nice community building if there is no homeless populace.
