I recently finished watching Avatar the Air Bender for the first time. I loved it so much I decided to make a game to fulfill my fantasy of becoming Aang. Here’s how it went…

Do you remember how imaginative you were as a kid? I remember pretending to have superpowers and having the best time of my life when I was little. I wanted to relive my childhood fantasy and embrace my inner geekiness by making a game where I get to play as my favorite character at the moment: Aang.
In this video, I’m going through my step by step design process to show you how I turned my imagination into reality. At the end of the day, I believe gaming is a form of interactive art medium and I want to encourage people to dare to keep dreaming like they used to!
This will likely be a mini series so stay tuned for more updates!

I think it would be pretty cool to have some attacks that might be able to affect rigid bodies inside your game. It would be fun to see a bunch of leaves, twigs, debris fly around with air attacks 💨

it'd be amazing if Aang got multiple animations for dodging, so when you spam the dodge button he looks like he's doing tricks 🤸🤸🤸

this is so awesome!! i’m so surprised triple A companies haven’t “taken advantage” of the avatar series and wish we could get a huge open world mmo rpg version but this game looks awesome!!

theres someone who makes avatar game on ps4's Dream engone/game. maybe collab with that person for a more refined avatar game? i love what he has doone with the game. also make aang's pupil a bit bigger? that dead ass stare is creeping me out, make it cuter like anime eyes are no smol like creepy dead dolls are

Elca gaming’s avatar fan game looks amazing for sure! I’m not trying to compete with them and I’m only aiming to make a small sample of refined gameplay, like a vertical slice. But if opportunities for collaboration comes up I’d definitely be interested too! And I do agree with the pupils haha. Thank you for the feedback!

I think the cel shading already looks good but his face feels kinda off to me, the lips seem a bit big, that could just be because it's not animated yet tho. Other than that maybe using fewer bands for the cel shading and editing the normals could look better too, kind of how guilty gear or cyber connect 2 games do it. Other than that I'd love to see gliding of some form in the game, it's one of the coolest traversal methods in games for me.

Hey there, thank you for the feedback! Yeah his face is definitely something I’d like to polish more later on. Translating 2D to 3D is always a bit tricky, but I’ll definitely look more into it! Gliding would be extremely fun, thank you for the suggestion! I’ll see what I can do about it :)

This devlog is incredible! I have been a fan of Avatar since I was a kid and I am currently working on an Indie Game myself! Its a small horror game and my first in Unity (I recently uploaded my first devlog as well), but honestly something like this was in my mind as my next project! As a CS major if you ever feel like you want to tackle this project with a group a devs I would love to collaborate! I am looking forward to this project. Just in time for Netflix's Avatar live action to launch. With the right story telling this is looking big! Great work!

Thank you! The cloth is just using unity’s built in cloth component. Pretty easy to use and really useful!

Yeah I saw! Their game looks super fun and cool haha. I'm mainly doing this to experiment with gameplay and art styles and don't plan to expand the scope as far. Im planning only to make the southern air temple map but refine my gameplay mechanics and visuals as much as I could so it's more like a demo or a vertical slice if that makes sense :)

I'm just going to throw this out there I don't know about your overall plan or anything but I think if you rush/focus multiplayer and 4 balanced fighting styles based on each of the elements people will absolutely go crazy for this and you won't have to include an insane amount of assets for a polished single-player experience. Again, I don't know your overall plan or anything, I'm just thinking how amazing an airbender vs earthbender pvp experience would be And with the new game server solutions out there, and the fact you want to release this for free, I think a multiplayer-first approach would be amazing here. The animations look fantastic for the airbending

Thank you for the suggestion! I absolutely agree. My plan for this game is rather on a smaller scale, however. I’m mainly focusing on making a small but high quality experience since I’m only one person. But if I ever do decide to expand further on the project, I’ll definitely look into that!

Ooh I love Avatar! I'd love to know if you have a favorite character, mines is Zuko. I was also wondering if you're planning on adding the rest of team avatar or are you just sticking with Aang. In other responses you said you wanted this to be fairly small scale so I wasn't sure if you were adding any other characters.

Zuko is awesome! I especially love the part when he was the blue spirit. If I had to pick, my favorite would probably be Toph! I definitely think adding in other characters would be super fun. I don’t plan to go too far beyond the original scope but adding a character or two might be a potential I can look more into :)

you are not the first, but since the other fan game "four seasons" in on something called dream which makes it only on ps4,5 and kinda limited in memory, I am VERY happy someone is making one for pc and possibly the other platform, I will happily subscribe to you and follow this project. @@timdagod that’s definitely an issue haha but I’ll try to see if I can get permission. Even if not, I don’t plan to monetize from this anyway so I’ll be okay just making it but not releasing it publicly. Though I’d love to get this in the hands of other fans. I’ll definitely try for sure!

That’s very true! I made Aang because I wanted to pay homage to the character that inspired me the most from the show. But an original avatar would be fun too!
