Wow! Thank you for this - it’s really helps - I’ve been struggling with composition for years - do you think you could create learning videos that break down in practice these concepts that we can put into practice? Sometime I feel like I want to build complex and sophisticated compositions but then it’s just gets too much for the eye- it’s becomes difficult to distill and stop back the elements.

Hey there, glad you found the video helpful! Composition is definitely something that takes time and patients to master, and I do plan to make more videos around the topic to break down even more specifics! In the mean time, feel free to check out my other video: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/irKPa85i09HZdGw.htmlsi=IfqRWo15WmMm39ha In this video I showed 10 things to look out for that can help you put together a stronger composition that catches your viewers eyes. Hopefully this helps!

Heyy, I just watched your video about the ATLA game and I loved it. Have you made further progress with it?, I'm recently getting into game development and I was thinking about learning unity and eventually doing something like that. I don't know how long it would take but we'll see

Hey there! I did make some progress on it since I posted that video, but it's a slow progress so I'm not ready to show anything new just yet. Hopefully I get more time to work on it soon though :) And that's exciting! If you ever have any questions about game development, feel free to reach out. I always enjoy chatting with fellow developers. Good luck!

Wow. Such quality in a random vid suggested by KZfaq. I very rarely "hit the red button" after seeing one video, but here I will (especially after seeing that you also have a video about "why your game doesn't stand out", which is exactly what I'm wondering about before making my next game. Good job!

Your analysis of why those things work in those particular examples is probably correct. However, I would very much caution against treating these rules as gospel. Sure, trickery is good for when you want players to have a specific experience. But too much, and it ends up feeling shallow and streamlined. Games, that are famous for the depth of their open world and immersiveness of exploration, break those rules more than follow them. They take effort to figure out - which is part of why it feels meaningful and satisfying when you finally do.
@D_2_Digital
@D_2_Digital 9 ай бұрын
Definitely agree! These rules should be used sparingly, and subtly. Doing too much can definitely start making your environment feel artificial and less immersive. Thanks for sharing your perspective!

True. I think open world type games need their own subset of these techniques. Arguably, a tall structure or object in the distance against a flat field might be the same principle as the observatory standing out against its environment (high contrast) but it would be implemented differently and at a different scale. I think the Big/Medium/Small principle would play out far more than the others for open world exploration, as that would most closely mimic what we'd see wandering in a open field. It wouldn't be a wagon pointing you to a gate way off in the distance but the outline of a wall-like structure in the distance that might catch the eye and pique curiosity.

Great content. How can direction be used in rts games where maps are symmetric for 2 players?
@D_2_Digital
@D_2_Digital 9 ай бұрын
Glad you enjoyed the content! It really depends based on what your goals are. If there's any specific points on the maps where you want to encourage players to discover (maybe unique resource locations, merchants, strategic advancement points...etc.) you can try to incorporate directionally into your map when you artify it. Adding things like road splines, debris, sinages...etc can all potentially help convey that. Hope this helps!

To be fair I think you're giving pro 3D artists a little more credit than they might deserve (as one myself). I do most of this process subconsciously. For the most part it wasn't even anything I actively learned, it just came from experience - both from playing games and working on them. A lot of what you talked about is what I call "the art of clutter" where you make seemingly meaningless objects fill out the space and engage the player without them acknowledging it. Composition is a big one too. Yes it's something you can teach, but most artist I know would agree that they were just sort of born understanding it - which I think applies to a lot of art subjects like color theory and shape language too. Also I think it's important to mention that while Stray wasn't a AAA game, it was certainly a AA game - with a budget of over 1m and nearly 30 people working on it. I know obviously your main point was that a single person can make great art, and while I definitely agree, I just think using Stray as an example isn't the best because probably 95% of indie teams are less than 5 people with virtually no budget at all. The video was good though - I'm not hating or anything, I just thought I would throw my perspective out there.
@D_2_Digital
@D_2_Digital 9 ай бұрын
Thanks for sharing your perspective! I totally agree, this is something that artists will eventually start to do subconsciously. My goal here is to help breakdown the artistic principles behind why one composition looks better than another, so that those who aren't yet able to do this subconsciously can get started by actively thinking about these process more. I myself was one of those artists who needed help and guidance to understand these principles. So hopefully people like my old self, as well as those who are struggling to get level up their art will find this breakdown easier to understand and digest :)

Haha yeah these are artistic principles to help guide a person's eyes, which means in some ways it's like psychology: it doesn't always work the same on everyone, since we all tend to experience things a little differently depending on our personal preferences. BUT, it does serve as a guideline that works best statistically on "most" of your audience.

I think the cel shading already looks good but his face feels kinda off to me, the lips seem a bit big, that could just be because it's not animated yet tho. Other than that maybe using fewer bands for the cel shading and editing the normals could look better too, kind of how guilty gear or cyber connect 2 games do it. Other than that I'd love to see gliding of some form in the game, it's one of the coolest traversal methods in games for me.
