Trent - question - I don't have raised beds. Could I build with the same 2 by 4"s on the bottom so to speak and then do the frame that u did. I'm watching and rewatching so forgive me if I have multiple comments. You made this greenhouse thing look smooth and now I'm inspired to actually build it. My man can help but he is an electrician so I need a basic diagram to give him

A snow load or heavy rain on the flat roof will collapse the plastic. Lower the angled support on one side so snow will slide off and rain can drain. Also, in the heat of the summer, the plants will cook. Vent front,back and sides near the top where hot air rises. Here, in the North of the Olympic Peninsula, it's 60 degrees and sunny with 110 degrees in the greenhouse! I've got the door open, a side vent and an inadequate fan. I put shade cloth over the roof and that helps. So, I built a hoop house with cattle panels and left one entire side able to open on a sunny day and 2 doors front and back to open; finally, a nice temp inside!

You said lots, but the snow load hit me as I love in northern Utah. He better let one side down or the whole thing will be a pile of broken wood come Spring. Unless they're in Southern Utah. Truthfully, they get the occasional blizzard there too. Trent and Allie - please fix this! Great ideas Bonnie!

Not sure why they built a flat roof greenhouse for where they are. Snow, rain, etc. plus needs ventilation. I hope you will be around next spring to help if your mom needs it with the flat top. Good luck.

Hi. I have to add my 2 cents on pressure to make the very adorable Oso reside with the livestock. Livestock guardians have been selectively bred to have very strong territorial instincts and an innate protectiveness and comfort with livestock. This is untrained. They are also, by nature, extremely independent thinkers, who will in time have very strong opinions. They are not as sensitive to owners' approval as are most dogs, so a strong bond with the owner is even more critical than with other dogs, in order to offset some of their natural independence. Altho my Akbash has the run of my 10 acres, she prefers to be outside, rather than inside. She likes to be on any elevated position, like on top of a hay stack, which gives her the advantage of height so she can better survey her domain. She has never welcomed strangers, and if workmen are present she will quietly bed down 50 feet from them in a shady spot, and keep an eye on them, as opposed to my ball crazy shepherd, who will bug them continuously to throw her ball. Once I was horse camping at a camp that had a guard Akbash. He spent the weekend watching over our campsite, lounging around on top of the picknic table, where he had a bird's eye view. Since we were the only campers, and part of this territory, he took his responsibility very seriously, and was great company. We had never met him before, but we were now more `livestock' to guard, as long as we were on his turf. Just enjoy little Oso's baby stage which will not last long, and cuddle him while you can. All too soon he will be a grown up, very responsible adult dog, who will be a bit more independent than you might prefer, with a solid, ingrained work ethic.

How much do I follow y’all? When Trent sneezed, I actually said, “God bless you!” I just love you two, and this part of your journey reminds me of my twenties, when my folks had a ranch and I kept a small fold of sheep. We had cows, chickens, rabbits, goats, a turkin (yes, it’s a cross between a chicken and a turkey!), and pigs. We also had a tree nursery. This was in the high desert of Southern California, and the temperature got high - like the breeze from an oven high! I remember that I saw 140 degrees on the thermometer in my bedroom once! We used to routinely spray the house with water in the afternoon!

@ Theresa Hartman Yes Dear God Bless Every One. 2 Timothy 3 But mark this: There will be terrible times in the last days. People will be lovers of themselves, lovers of money, boastful, proud, abusive, disobedient to their parents, ungrateful, unholy, without love, unforgiving, slanderous, without self-control, brutal, not lovers of the good, treacherous, rash, conceited, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God- having a form of godliness but denying its power. Looks great Trent!! I had something similar when I was living with my grandparents on their farm. I might suggest that you add a watering system into the green house. They sell some watering systems in the stores, or you can make your own (like I did). All you need to do is attach the watering system (or a hose that has holes in it) along the top, and have it hooked up to a timer at the faucet. You can also cut the sides of the greenhouse up about a foot, and that will let you roll them up to allow for airflow when you need it, and you can add a fastener at the corners so you can keep them down when you don't want them open. Oh! and my grandfather coiled up rope around his tomatoes and had it go over a bar, so as the plant grew he would just pull the rope up more... then when it was time to harvest you just lower the rope and pick them off. You could do this concept with peas and beans as well since they are vine growers. (sorry for info overkill, I'm stuck in SLC to go to college and miss growing things back home in Kansas)!! I have loads more ideas if you want any more tips.

The green house looks great. You definitely need ventilation in each end side because you need bees to easily come into the green house to pollinate your food forest. Also you need ventilation to cool the green house down. Buy a large thermostat for the green house so you can easily know the temperature and can cool or heat. Another thing that you definitely should add is a fan. Plants become hardy from sun and wind or a breeze. Another thing to spray on your plants as they get bigger size is an aspirin dissolved in a squirter bottle. The chemical cause the plants to think they’re under attack so they pump nutrients and chemicals to protect the plant. This helps your plants to be stronger and hardier to with stand bugs and the elements. Plant your tomatoes with an egg near the roots and some lime granules. Epsom salt is also good. Growing in elevated or ground level planters you should add worm castings and epsom salt to the soil and mix in. I used worm castings this year and my plants right now look phenomenal. Worms will not be present in your above ground planters and worms are the care takers of the soil. Plants thrive where worms are present. Worm castings supplement where worms are not present. Lettuce loves worm castings . diatomaceous earth is good to put on non blossoming plants to organically kill off leaf eating bugs and Neem oil works as well.

Does it snow there? Come winter snow will collapse that frame. We used plastic for the top half walls of our greenhouse (plywood bottom walls). It lasted two winters then became brittle enough to blow apart in our frequent windstorms this past winter. Now we cleaned up the plastic and put those corrugated plastic sheets up. It has a hard wood frame roof with metal roofing sheets. We want to rig up a water catchment system at some point. But for now the garden hose reaches. LOL

Those large flat "roof" sections are going to puddle and quickly become a huge problem. Normally hoop houses have a cylindrical roof so water can't pool and just runs off the sides. Hoops don't have large flat areas.. You may be able to use your design to your advantage though by adding a drain at the the center of each flat roof section. That drain would have a hose that connects to a cistern to collect the rain water rather than having it pool on the roof. Rain water collected in the cistern could then be used on the *farm* as needed. You could also set up a solar powered rain water irrigation system with a single solar panel, battery and 12v water pump. After your van builds that should be easy to figure out for a greenhouse. If you want to get real fancy add in an automated control system using arduino or similar to control the irrigation system automatically. The options then become endless but check out this video from 2015 for an example of what you can do with little money but a potentially steep learning curve. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/hcWBZLp8qNq7mXU.html

Trent, I come from a family that wants to build pole barns with a micrometer so I get the perfectionist in you. You will grow to understand that there are no mistakes if you learn from them, it took me years. Some suggestions, put padding between the plastic and the corners of piping to stop wear and tear. It will also collapse from the weight of the snow in winter or even water weight , I know this from experience. You may need to exchange the PVC Piping with wood trusses. Hope this helps

Hey on the shed that is full of wasps, hornets, bees, etc. you need to get a fog machine powered by a small propane canister like is used on a Coleman lantern. They sell them at Lowes, they use a liquid bug killer you pour into the tank and the fogger has a 2 foot long cone looking shape made of a metal screen. Turn on the propane gas valve, press a ignition button to ignite the burner, there is a trigger you pull with your index finger and it shoots the insecticide over the flame and that turns it into a fog. Fog early in the morning before sunrise or later after sunset while the barometric pressure is down so the fog stays low to the ground. It will fog the whole building and kills those stinging pests. I used one to help my neighbor get rid of bees that no bee keeper would remove due to the eves under the roof on a house that needed to be removed and replaced. I have used this fogger for up to ten years. I remember the pesticide comes in a black bottle like a quart of motor oil size. I think Black Flag or some other company makes them. It is great for mosquitoes too. It does put a small film on the area sprayed so you want to use it outdoors. Also use blue Dawn liquid detergent in a 1-5 gallon bucket of water to throw on bushes or hornets in the ground. Be sure to do these applications early in the morning or real late in the evening almost at dark so the insects are settled down into their nesting area. You can use a bucket of clean water later to rinse the bushes if you think the soap might harm them a little, it usually doesn’t but if it has been extremely dry out, the soap needs to be rinsed off of the bushes just to be on the safe side. Good luck. I miss the country and love all of your critters, they are what helps make life even more special.

@VonBluesman
@VonBluesman 4 жыл бұрын
kcblues2 sherwood No pesticides are 100% safe around pets and humans that is why it is up to the individual to find the safest product or method to use. About the fog pesticide, do not spray any food or bedding area or directly on any animal or human. I prefer to use the soap detergent liquid Dawn, blue in color. If it is safe enough to wash dishes and wash off the oil from the contaminated animals from the B.P. Gulf Of Mexico oil spill, it will most defenently
@VonBluesman
@VonBluesman 4 жыл бұрын
kcblues2 sherwood Read the label as there are standard precautions to abide by as always with the use of any pesticides. I prefer using the liquid blue color Dawn Dishwashing soap. Dawn was used to remove oil from the contaminated birds, animals, and some sea life from the world’s largest oil spill by B.P. In the Gulf Of Mexico. When I used to put out granulated bug killer in my yard, I would make my service dog stay inside until I had fully watered in the yard. If you don’t treat the area in some way, the fleas, ticks, mosquitoes, gnats, wasps, horse flies, etc. can cause physical harm to the animals.

Don't be so hard on yourself, you did a great job and I'm really impressed that the raised beds were so well built and placed that you could use them as part of the structural framing of the greenhouse. When I saw the PVC pipe going up I thought aha, Trent's going to put in a watering system to make it easier to water the plants. Looks like I was wrong on that one. Great job, guys! Happy Mothers Day to Trent's mom and, to you Allie. After all Frank is your boy and you've done a great job of raising him.

I just discovered something called cattle panels. They are inexpensive and work great as trellises in the garden. Look on youtube for examples. We just made trellises for a lady banks rose and cucumbers in the garden. Works great! They are 50 inches by 16 feet long so you just cut them to size. My husband used a grinder to cut thru the 4 gauge wire. Cheap and easy fix!

I think, Trent, that you are totally enjoying this "farm life" and the great feelings it invokes.. on growing things, building things, and nurturing your animals. I've done it in the past, and there is nothing better! It's so so satisfying and fulfilling. And the greenhouse is awesome... not "poop".. I had to laugh outloud. And Allie, you are such a great encourager for Trent.. you guys have so much energy and have fun while working together - so great to see. Just remember, you do need to vent the greenhouse really well.. have doors on each end, a vent up high and fans. If you don't, things inside will die from the extreme heat, no matter how much you water them. That comes from experience.. and even living in a milder climate that was only in the 90's in the summer... greenhouse way too hot without lots of venting, or a side you can roll up during the day to let some air in.

Allie "Lots of wood the same length" Either Measure the first one (twice!), touch with the saw to check the cut, but before you cut it, get "somebody" to bang a stake into the ground touching the end of the wood. Then, just slide each length up to the stake and cut. Or (easier) Cut the first one. Check it fits, mark it with a cross, take it back to the saw and use it to measure the others!

My dad was a perfectionist and I've been wrestling with it for 52 years. It must be hereditary. Not one of my finest traits. Might I suggest, though, some pipe insulation foam on the corners of the PVC parts to reduce the possible wear the wind will do to the plastic. The farm is really coming along. Congrats on the first milking of Nancy.
@ericschlag2023
@ericschlag2023 4 жыл бұрын
For the greenhouse....the plastic needs to be tight. The wind will make it rub against the wood and pvc and very soon you'll have holes everywhere. Once its loose it will be able to pull the tarp away from the staples. First thing I'd do is use 1x4 lumber and sandwich over the tarp that you stapled on the bottom. This will be your first line of defense. Next I would do the same to the door and window frames. There is a reason PVC pipe isn't used outdoors.....its not UV resistant so it will become brittle and crack and break. Since you just put it up, I would recommend pulling the tarp back off and framing it with 2x4's, using a ridge beam for snow load strength and to keep it all straight. Just some thoughts. Also, how are you going to keep the goats away from eating it?

Good job guys. A greenhouse is a functional structure and if it does not blow over (you need a window at either end for ventilation) and the plants don' freeze and they bear lots of leaves, roots, and fruits it is a real success. I am sure that there are lots of charmingly beautiful, supposedly functional, structures that don't serve their intended purposes; those structures are not worth having. Only time will tell. So, you live and you learn! Thanks to both of you for sharing!

I had a dome for some years. You do have to redo the plastic every year. The one with the fibers freezes and then you get a million little squares of plastic everywhere. It also tends to break at the folds hence tape on the folds. Trial and error will inform you as to the best plastic sheeting for you. In winter we would double it like a thermopane window. Also need passive solar collector for winter like a barrel of water painted black. In summer we would roll up one or both sides. As moisture collected it would rain in the greenhouse

Hi guys, great job with the greenhouse. One suggestion, if you can you should put a small strip of wood over the wood frame to keep the tarp from pulling over the screws/staples. With enough wind the tarp will pull over the heads of the screws or staples. The wood strips will secure it and it will last much longer. Great show, we are watching your KZfaq vlog, yes Trent and Allie you need to settle down with a small farm one day. You are both gifted for it. Toronto, ON

Trent, I believe you may end up with a problem of water pooling at the top of tarp/plastic because it is a bit to flat up there. My husband and I have had experience with camping etc and you need a peak or the rain will make it sag down and even cave in. A quick fix may be to use cattle panels. You could attach them to the planter boxes and curve them and tie them together at top to make an arch in the tarp. I hope I am explaining this in a way in a way you might understand. Otherwise, job well done! You and Allie are our favorite "van lifers". We weekend in a travel trailer and got so excited to see that will be your home and adventure trailer for a while.

I love that Gloria, who is clearly hard working woman and was a solid mother to Trent, is getting some improvements to her home. These things would be very difficult for her to materialize on her own and she trusts her son to sort it out properly. And, he is! This kind of “give back” to our parents, while they are still young enough to enjoy them, is a wonderful thing to do. Good for you guys, and good for Allie to support her future mother in law so much and with her usual great attitude. (Note to Trent: finding a partner who wakes up with a can do attitude and a generally pleasant demeanor every day is a very, very good find, indeed.) I thought the greenhouse looked very serviceable and that is fantastic. I question its stability in high winds, however. PVC flexes a lot and the plastic tarp should not have much movement at all as this is what causes it to rip and fray. I wonder if the whole contraption will survive 50-60 mph wind gusts? But I would be very happy to be proven wrong here; Gloria deserves her greenhouse, and Trent and Allie worked hard to make it happen. It was very nice to see the progress you’ve made in building trust with the goats. I agree with an earlier poster who wondered whether you had properly washed the goat’s udder prior to extracting milk! Goat cheese isn’t hard to make, and goat’s milk soap is fantastic. Finally, if you want Oso to think of the goats as “his” to protect, then he needs to bond with them far more than he does with people. He should be sleeping with them and spending all of his time with them. I give you bad marks here, but confess I’d be useless enforcing it, too. That darn Oso would be under my covers! He is too cute!

Imho a peaked roof needed for snow and rain. Reinforced poly will last 2-3 yrs. trench and dirt is good. I prefer railroad ties. Just have to have enough poly to do a wrap on them so chemicals don’t leach into soil. Lastly use poly rope/cord to triangulate and put tension on structure. Truckers hitch is the knot to use. Adjustable as needed. Great job! Fan at one end on thermostat and humidistat for control. Strings of LED lights on small solar array and battery so you also run a 12v pump?

Being someone who has homesteaded for many years might I suggest a few things. Bring the milking stand up so you are more off the ground. Your plants may surprise you. Let them have time to recover. As far as the greenhouse you should round off the top because rain or snow could build up on it and collapse it. I used those conduit clips to mount mine. Wish I was there to help you guys. Also I read that cardboard can hold the covid virus for 24 hours, just a thought when I seen you take it from the UPS man bare handed. Also note the temp will be much higher in the greenhouse, well over a hundred on some days and will burn up your plants.

Put some framing on the outside to hold the plastic tarp. From the sides to the framing that you put in the middle on each end. You can also support it more by running a 2x4 on the inside of the PVC to connect all the PVC uprights. I hope that makes sense. All those things will keep the tarp from flapping in the wind and give you opportunity to clean it up a bit. It will hold up a lot better with a bit more structure.
