Defender mods and travels

Күн бұрын

I am off for a major trip in the Defender starting with shipment of the vehicle by container.
This video details the preparations I have made and my reasons for wishing to go now. Apart from the lousy winter weather we have in the UK, there's an appalling economic and political climate which makes it a very unpleasant place to be at the moment. It's far better to be out on the open road in a really interesting place without constant government interference in one's private life.
The related videos on shipping a vehicle may be found at

Wish me good luck on my travels.

As a comparatively young chap, I appreciate you for explaining your reasoning for going. It's refreshing seeing someone go on a trip for reasons other than, "dude, I wanted to drink beer and drive over rocks with my chrome bro-dozer." Sub'd, without expectations of future videos (enjoy the trip and don't let video production take from your experience).

Your channel seems to have quite a lot of serious off roading! You are quite right about video production detracting from the experience which is why I hardly do any travel videos. It takes a lot of time and trouble to do good out-of-vehicle clips and dashcam footage, which causes no trouble, is usually rather boring. Drone shots can be great but it takes a lot of time to learn the skills and you need a lot of permits to fly a drone legally. As I have said, I will take photos and video footage to document my trip and if I can make a worthwhile video out of it I will.

All the best and I wish you a good trip. I would say that your take on videos is quite different to the run of the mill, and as an Engineer myself (electrical rather than mechanical) I appreciate the nitty gritty details in your videos. So many thoughts : a) I ate my eggs, bacon and black tea whilst watching this enthralling and alluring preposition. A great start to the day. I sincerely thank you. b) Just this morning here in the Antipodes we get the headline "Christianity in the minority for first time in UK". Ten years ago, Basil Fawlty, oops, John Cleese upset the woke police when he said "There's something terribly wrong when the mother culture is the minority in London". c) Although things are grim you must always remember what Vera Lynn said "There will always be an England" No matter the weather nor how despondent and depressing it becomes it is your job and destiny to remain stoic and maintain Britishness and a stiff upper lip. It is completely within your remit to refuse to do manual labour with the enlisted men. Something about a bridge on a river....But I digress.... haha :-) d) You know, when The King asked Churchill at breakfast "How can you drink at this time of the morning?" he replied "Practice". e) I wish you good health and prosperity. Happy Days are here again. :-)

The sentiment "There'll always be an England" is becoming a distant memory. The fact that less than 50% of the population is now Christian, and only 37% of Londoners are white shows the profound changes which have taken place here. I wonder what would happen if there was another world war now. How many of the incomers would lay down their lives to fight as our parents' generation did before? The UK has lost its direction and is rudderless IMO. I'll enjoy myself this winter and see what awaits when I return.

Just found your channel Bill. I'd say that the videos you put out are most certainly different and most definitely worthy of continuing. You have something to say and a perspective to share that is unique and I for one love it. Your videos have a substance that "influencers" can only dream of. As an ex pat who left Birmingham in 93 aged 23 I liked the insight into the "old" countries current political and economical situation which is pretty much the same as ours here in the "lucky" country. If you ever find yourself tootling around Tasmania then I'll be sure to seek you out and say hello!

Welcome aboard Brummie! Thinking about some of your comments. This is just a hobby channel so I don't think about influencing anyone. I do have the advantage of being a Chartered Engineer so when I look at a technical problem I view it differently to most. I have also worked in and visited a lot of countries (80+) so I tend to see things in context. I am appalled at the way the Western democracies are going but won't get into that here because this isn't a political channel. I am currently in South Africa and the Defender is in the container port over 3 weeks late. I have a sneaking feeling that it ain't going back to the UK any time soon 🙂

Completely missed this video until now. I completely agree with your sentiments on the country and direction of travel, but I have some optimism that more people are starting to wake up. I hope you do put up a video of your travels as I find your no bs attitude and honesty enjoyable to watch. The vast majority of YT'ers are presenting a fictional character and lifestyle to get more clicks. My 109 County is currently parked in a basement garage in Slovenia, hoping to drive it back to the UK next year.
@defendermodsandtravels
@defendermodsandtravels Жыл бұрын
Having been travelling around SA and Namibia for a few months now I'd say it has been really good but I wouldn't say it has been "insane", "epic", "next level". You are right that many YT content creators try to present a highly idealised picture of what life on the road is like. My 32 year old Defender seems to be the only old vehicle around here and you must find the same with your 109. Everyone drives camper equipped Hiluxes and Explorers. They are no doubt more comfortable than the Defender but the travel experience in the old vehicle is just as good. There's no good reason to change it. I am thinking about a trip video but haven't decided yet.

I’d certainly appreciate watching some video/commentary about problem solving during your trip - whether mechanical or bureaucratic etc. Thanks also for the urine bottle - as a man with a dodgy prostate, that piece of travel kit looks a lot better than an old orange juice bottle! Another advantage of the urine bottle is that it has an adapter for use by both sexes (or maybe I should say "all sexes", if I don't want the channel to be cancelled by YT). The disadvantage of using an orange juice bottle is that if you are a man of a certain age you can get very forgetful and confused - say no more.

I attended the Last Overland arrival at Folkestone in Dec 2019 and met one of the surviving "students". I posted a video about this on YT. Heady days just before covid. I am stranded in Capetown. The container vessel 3 weeks overdue and the container has now been on the quayside for nearly 2 weeks :-( However Customs performed their inspection today so I am hopeful of getting the Defender soon. Cape Town isn't a bad place to be stranded (a good 25C warmer than UK).

All the very best on your future journey, you are an inspiration. I have a question. Have you any experience of rear Salisbury axles on the landrover 110? I have some concerns for longer trips as by all accounts they are very difficult to work on by the average traveller and the advice is to swap the axle out for a td5 version which is easier to replace parts if they should fail. Once again best wishes wherever you adventures take you.
@defendermodsandtravels
@defendermodsandtravels Жыл бұрын
In answer to your question, I have no experience of Salibury axles. I think you will find it's very hard to get the diff core out of the housing but they are very robust and there's no reason you'd need to do that during an expedition. I think that changing half shafts, wheel bearings etc. is no more complicated than for a Rover axle. I wouldn't change the axle which is a big and expensive job. I'd suggest you should contact Ashcroft Transmissions who are helpful and will give good advice.

I don't run a strict editorial policy. The main theme is indeed about converting an old Defender and performing expeditions in it but I also have interests in engineering and WW2. I try to keep different types of videos in separate playlists. Occasionally political frustrations break through. I will be increasingly absent from the UK where I tick every wrong box as far as the modern political and social environment is concerned (older white male; Christian; straight; STEM graduate ; self reliant; gender critical) - God what a terrible person I am. The next time the Defender leaves these shores it's unlikely to return. The channel will peter out.
