Ooooh I was listening to an interview with Tananarive Due just last night on NPR and it was so interesting. She said that this book was written for her mom because the characters were based on her mom's family. She said that during the entire book she'd ask what would her mom do whenever she got stuck. I'm usually not into horror but being from South GA, I think this one is gonna terrify me in the best way. Can't wait to read The Reformatory!

My library is sadly lacking in sci-fi and Fantasy so I have to cough up for these genres. My thrillers and mysteries can mostly be borrowed so it's not all bad.

Love your videos as always! I don't mean this rhetorically, i really want to know: how do you consistently choose books that are so perfect for you? Out of all the other booktubers I watch, you seem to have the most excellent reading experiences most of the time. I could be wrong, but it seems like you do not have any sense of obligation, stress or pressure in your reading life?? I have occasional moments of reading perfection each year, and lots of enjoyable reads, but I rarely am so certain as you are that i am going to enjoy a book when I sit down to start reading it. Maybe this is something that comes with time? I've been a reader my entire life but have really started trying to figure out what books work for ME personally, since 2021. Please tell me your secrets 😂😂

Love this question! I think a lot of it has just come with time tbh. I have a good sense of what I’ll enjoy based on the kinds of themes/tones/characters, etc. that I already love, but I usually don’t know where, exactly, a book will fall on the enjoyment spectrum. So throughout the year I end up with a mix of solid/enjoyable reads and ones that are incredible! And it’s so rare when I’m confident I’ll love something, and it actually turns out to be true. That’s why I’m so happy about Priory 😄 Some predictions have been flops like Senlin and Name of the Wind lol. But a lot of times, I’m reading repeat authors I already enjoy, continuing with series I already love, or seeing people with very similar taste recommend something, so that helps a lot! It can still be hit/miss sometimes, and I do have bad reading stretches. Feb-April last year was incredibly meh, and I still want to forget about most of the books I read in 2021 😂 I also think it seems like I have a lot of positive reading experiences because I don’t consistently talk about the bad/meh ones! If I don’t like something, you’ll probably only hear about those books only a couple times- once in that month’s particular wrap up, and it if was *really* bad, you’ll hear about it a again in a ‘worst books of the year’ video, but that’s about it! I keep my reading stress free, don’t seek out books I know I won’t like, and DNF the ones I’m not enjoying lol I defintely recommend seeing what all your favorite reads/5⭐️ books have in common! Curating the tbr becomes so much easier from there 🙌🏽

@@ToriMorrow thank you so much for responding!! That makes so much sense. I hadn't thought about the fact that while you might rave about a good read all year, you won't necessarily rant about a bad one all year 😆. And I think you're exactly right about repeating authors and continuing in series upping your chances of a book being great! I had never thought about the fact that I very rarely read series, and rarely repeat authors - most of my reading the past few years have been new author after new author. Thank you again for responding! You've given me food for thought. I had already been toying with the idea of becoming a series reader in 2024 since there are so many good ones I want to try, so I think this might be the year for that!

@@ToriMorrow oh and I just thought of one other thing! You pretty much stick to SFF books, right? I read from sooooo many genres (middle grade, ya, adult, novels in verse, self help, biography, nonfiction, contemporary, sci Fi, fantasy, graphic novels etc) that I can totally see why I may be getting a very mixed bag when it comes to reading books I love. Maybe I can look at my reading ratings for 2023 and cut out a couple of genres I consistently don't enjoy.

Priory is sooo frustrating to me because it 1) it had the potential to be incredible, 2) I love her other series, and 3) I get salty when I see the whole world gush about one of the few things I'm willing to call objectively flawed. Its such great world building and character work (for half the characters) but the pacing... if she had to keep it at that page count, just edit down the first 250pg where nothing happens and that way your most climactic moment wont have to only take up 8 pages. I counted. The big bad evil is on the page for 8pgs before getting defeated. I really want to love it because there are parts of it I think are like 6★ but I cant ignore the 2★ parts. I hope she learned her lesson for the new books but I'm hesitant to pick it up
@ToriMorrow

That’s fair! From what I’ve heard I think pacing is an issue for most people who didn’t really get on with the book. But I loved watching the world/history of priory unfold so much that it didn’t bother me 😄 I still need to read her bone season series, but looking forward to it!
