Fun Fact: In first year sociology (at the university level) you learn NOT to put ever more specific labels on everything, because it's a slippery slope. Eventually you have a label for each individual person, and then you can just use their names. Labels are imperfect umbrella terms, used to focus on broad categories for the purposes of study. You don't have to give a new name to every minor variation within a label, unless it's statistically relevant.

Punk came along, later, and the mohawk hair, body piercings and such started out as a statement, but ended up just like everybody else, and people wore the uniform like armor, to hide their actual insecurities. These extremes are all an attempt to set yourself apart by outward appearances, which shows a lack of actual self-worth, a lack of individual identity that most of us acquire by our ACHIEVEMENTS.

@Aeru self knowledge is internal. It stays inside, and you dont expect others to have to keep up with it. you don’t need to take PERSONAL GROWTH and tile over it with language. Doing so takes away from the actual DIRECT, felt experience of being present and human. If it werent a social identity, these people wouldnt bother sharing it with others. It’s okay to indulge in escapism but know where the lines of reality are drawn and don’t expect other to participate in your fantasy and internal dialogues.
@zephsmith34992 жыл бұрын
@Aeru Good points. Especially self-chosen labels vs those applied by others. #2 is another way of saying "youthful exploration of self as it manifests in this era", something most will outgrow. One thing which I find interesting however is that there seems to be a tendency towards framing everything as social justice, rather than owning it as personal choice. So rather than saying "This is how my psyche works, this is what I like and dislike, how I feel", there is a tendency to create a group identity label with which to affiliate (hoping others will join and validate your identity), and to lecture the world (from a place of moral superiority as a mis-understood tiny minority) about the correct meaning. I find that less healthy in several ways, but the proof will be in the in pudding: we will see if it results in mentally healthy productive adults down the road or not. Let me illustrate my concern with a real world example. Somebody in one of my (huggy) social circles decided that they didn't want others to stoop down when giving them a hug (an optional practice which most of the shorter folks DO want and appreciate). Rather than make a personal request for something else for themselves, they brought it up to the group by labeling such stooping for a hug as a "microaggression" serving to highlight a person's shortness and thus marginalization. Now it's a matter of making people "wrong" for doing it, asserting that so doing is a grievance and thus violates the (newly asserted) tribal norms. It inhibits genuine empathy, and substitutes "correct behavior". I see something similar here. Rather than saying "I don't tend to be attracted to people until I feel there reciprocal attraction", a young person is taught (via modeling) that one needs to create a group identity with a label, then identify as a member of that newly invented group. Identities are sacrosanct after all, especially small minorities. Can young folks not have individual pesonalities with a customized set of traits any more? Does ever personal trait need to be validated as a group "identity" to be real?

For myself, my daughter came out as gay last year and it's left me torn. I support her 100% but she's now part of a community that I don't feel comfortable supporting because of where it's headed and the ideology it's been hijacked by. I feel that by actively supporting LGBT movement, I'm also enabling the politics in some way, something I believe to be dangerous and harmful and against my values. I wish there was a separation between just being gay, bisexual or trans, and the politicising of sexuality and transgenderism, which is the thing I can't get behind. At the same time, I don't want to make my daughter feel that I don't support her by openly rejecting the LGBT movement for the activism aspect of it. She is young and I fear she would misunderstand my position. I think this dissonance is something a lot of people who do support LGBT rights feel when it comes to supporting the movement these days. The community itself is so ideologically divided now that I feel that it would be better and less confusing for it to separate into different groups with different goals anyway.
@zephsmith34992 жыл бұрын
@@loud6037 I hear how you are torn. Some unrequested suggestions. Remember that most regular LGBT people are not the crazy fringe, they're just folks. I would prioritize supporting your daughter over expressing your dislike of the activist community. I think we are heading for some degree of reckoning, where the excesses of certain political subcultures are going to bring down their standing and power. For one thing, more and more long term liberals are becoming disenchanted with the radicals - sometimes when they find out that ANY dissent from the narrative brings down nasty repercussions - they get to see the ugly underbelly of neo-progressivism when it come for them. And they start to feel some empathy for others who have been targeted for not being sufficiently dogmatic. Many even avoid "the community" as understood by activists (ie; a community including only other activists). She may know that you are not very supportive of the strategies of some LGBT activists, but keep it low key and distinct from your support of her. At some point, she may begin to see the cracks herself, and realize that she is ready to talk more with you - without needing to eat crow based on previously feeling a need to defend them from your dislike. In other words, don't push her, don't force her to harden her beliefs into dogma because she feels attacked by you. And feel free to ignore all this; you know your daughter better. I'm just writing because I've seen and heard of some well meaning efforts that went south by being too confrontational, before the other person was ready to hear.

It's really sad to see so many young women referring to themselves with literally any word they can except "woman", especially the term non-man. Most girls have some issues with gender growing up, mostly because of the social expectations that a male-dominated society places on us, and coming to terms with our place in the world as the "weaker sex", the pressure to adopt certain roles. despite all the efforts that have been made for equality and mutual respect between men and women, we're still not really there yet. nowhere is this more evident than in today's young people- it's no wonder that the tik tok to onlyfans pipeline is a thing, because young women are being taught that they can only value themselves as an accessory to men, not their own class of human beings worthy of rights and protections. we literally are biologically, verifiably different from males and all throughout history have suffered many kinds of abuse because of it. the phrase "non-man" is possibly the most blatantly obvious and tone-deaf expression of internalised misogyny you will ever see. It's just depressing, to be honest. I feel so bad for all the young women growing up with this nonsense, it has a devastating and lasting impact on their identities and self-worth.

Much of what you say makes sense. I'd like to hear more about why you think you think that there is so much power in "the social expectations that a male-dominated society places on us" today? I'm not questioning that there are pressures, what I'm asking is how male dominated society really is today, in terms of everyday life (99.99+% of us are not going to be a big CEO or supreme court justice or president, regardless of sex). I perceive a lot of the pressures as coming from other women. For example, a LOT of women's fashion appears to be about impressing or competing with other women, not men. Women today select their partners and mates at least as much as men do. There are nearly half again as many women as men in college. At least around here, there's a lot of support for "girls in STEM", for those who want it. A great deal of legislation has made family court very woman friendly. Please do not impute to me anything about saying men are the real victims or anything silly like that; that is not what I'm saying. I'm saying that overall, for ordinary folks, the "system" today seems to give advantages to women in as many ways as it gives advantages to men, and often gives advantages to neither. The featured young women on TikTok seem to be largely influenced by other females, less by men or "male dominated society". Their behavior does not seem aimed at pleasing men, nor does it benefit men. Nor does it benefit the young women themselves, in their relations with men - tho it might affect their relations (of status or friendship) with other "non-men". Why does this matter? Well, it's not intended to "defend men", so much as to avoid convenient - but inaccurate - scapegoating, BECAUSE if you obsess on an overly simplistic or outdated blame target, you get no traction on the real causes of a problem. It's like the police being so obsessed with "the usual suspects" that they stop looking for the real perp. So I'm questioning whether the traditional targeting is based on a deep or shallow understanding of the mechanisms causality in today's reality. (And of course, men and women both will be relevant).

Male dominated society? 90% of trans in this country are trans woman (born biological male). If this society is so male dominated why do men become women? Because it's an easier life with less expectations and to be looked at as the fairer sex.
