You can unfold it completely flat if you use a small amount of force. Google said it's normal. Hasnt been an issue on mine opening it all the way flat with just a bit more effort. And yeah, creases, notches, hole punches, or any screen protrusions never "go away." But i still like the Pixel Fold much better than the Z Fold 4 I traded. Aspect ratio and Google UI push it way over the top.

@@mikefromlighthousesmma1707 Not amazing, about average, comparable to the ZF4. Heavy users on-the-go will probably need to charge a bit before the end of the day. I'm a heavy user as well, but with wireless chargers everywhere, it's a non issue for me.

@@mikefromlighthousesmma1707 In certain situations, it can get warmer than most phones, but it's not common, and still perfectly usable. Since it hasn't been reproducible, I'm thinking it's more of a software issue that will get fixed or at least improved in the future.

If you fold it 100 times a day it should last six years. Most iPhones only last just over two

I’d love for the tech to be perfected and mainstream. It’d be amazing if 5 years from now, tablets are made redundant because our folding phones are also our tablet. Better for the environment (and our wallets) too if that was to happen

I previously had the Samsung Fold 4, loved it when it was unfolded but the aspect ratio of the front screen prevented me from really enjoying it. I spent a few weeks watching reviews from those that got to try out the Pixel Fold early and I read a bunch of articles, quickly became obsessed. Needless to say I've had mine for about two weeks now and I love it so freakin' much. While the price point is insane for these foldable phones, this one actually feels worth the price point - way more than the Samsung Fold anyway. In my opinion of course lol

i wanted to try a foldable so i picked up a used galaxy fold z3 (not cheap but cheaper than buying new!). It is a fun phone and I do think there is a ton of potential in having essentially a phone that becomes a small tablet when you need it. Also loved the capacitive fingerprint sensor in the power button. But I was worried about breaking it and had to put on a pretty big case for protection as well as to store the optional s pen. Then I got frustrated one day with the front screen in direct sunlight, and opted to trade it in for a good discount on an s23 ultra. I wish I waited as would have gotten an even bigger trade in value samsung for the zfold 5 --$200 more than the trade in for the s23 ultra. But...part of me is more comfortable with the ultra's battery life and....hopefully less chance of breaking it. I would check sites for used devices if you want to try out a folding device at a discount.

I don't follow news on foldables much since I'm not particularly interested, though interested enough to see Lon's review, but I have heard(I think it was Linus of LTT) that the creases of these are weak and develop signs of wear after some time. These are definitely not for me. For all the functionality they have, they also seem to bring about new problems.

The Google Pixel Fold can fold flat according to KZfaqr "MrMobile" aka Michael Fisher. Check his review "Pixel Fold Review: The Price Isn't The Point" at 4:38 he says "... you kind of need to force it." I think it needs to be a gentle push.

They seem a bit cumbersome, and also harder to protect. Also, the 'phone' screen and the 'tablet' screen are both too small. I suspect that foldables won't be a popular way to use a phone.

These things represent less than 1% of Samsung's market share and probably 1/10 of 1% of Android market share. Yet, they probably get like 30% of the media coverage. I think that's why companies are making them, it gives you a bunch of earned media even though most people still don't buy them. Maybe when someone walks into a carrier store they might think about a Google Pixel when they buy a regular phone because they've seen some of these videos. They're basically Halo products. You were five generations in for Samsung and they still haven't even cracks 2% of the market share with foldables including their flip which is relatively cheaper.
@LonSeidman
@LonSeidman Жыл бұрын
Yeah I think you are right on with this assessment. That said if they had a lower cost version I think these would sell very well given the popularity of small tablets and/or large screen phones. Funny thing is that I know of a few less-than-tech savvy people in my circle that walk around with the Folds so they're finding some general adoption (anecdotally at least).

I expect Google devices not to have a microsd card slot. Sucks, but that's been the norm for them for a long time. But no video over the USB-C port is just ridiculous, given the high price tag. Also, despite advances in the durability of the flexible screens, they're still likely to fail at the hinge from mechanical wear. So despite the cool features and utility, an $1800 e-waste device is a big pass for me.

As opposed to being stoked at the idea of a foldable phone that "can do so much more" I find myself clutching my S10 with it's removable storage and headphone jack even tighter, and thinking to myself whether or not I go backwards to a feature phone from a smart phone with my next purchase. I'm just not interested in spending more than $1000 every couple years, and I'm not 15 years old anymore needing the latest greatest tech because I'm bored.

@@SnowyRVulpixI mean not if you want to game with zero latency. Or to listen to music with no loss or compression. Or if you want something that won't become e-waste in a few years. And the true advantage of the phone with the headphone jack is you can use both, Bluetooth and wired headphones. I use Bluetooth probably 75% of the time but when I actually need to gain with no latency or listen to music the headphone jack is an obvious tool that every phone should have. Honestly the S10 is a perfectly fine piece of phone even now. Still get security patches, 5G is mostly irrelevant for US customers at least. It's disappointing it doesn't get Android 13 but you can absolutely use an S-10 . Not to mention you still have the capacite fingerprint sensor, Samsung pay an expandable storage all of which Samsung has ditched. And a QHD screen on almost every S10 model whereas now you have to pay $1,300 to get a QHD screen. Even the $999 S23 Plus is a full HD screen
