This may not be wise, but I'm giving the Red Hot Chili Peppers a chance again. Last time I did a video on their new song at the time, the Frusciante fans were not impressed. So, today I'm looking at their latest release "Tippa My Tongue". I'm sorry, I did try...let me know if my assessment is correct and if this song does it for you or is it lacking something?

I absolutely loved this single. It's funky and the recording manages to get across how confident they're feeling right now. I saw them live in Toronto last week and you can tell they are locked in. I'm not sure Anthony has ever sung better than on this tour to be honest.

Went to the show here in Detroit earlier this month which is the second time seeing them live (2014 was the first with Klinghoffer on guitar) and it was without a doubt one of the most entertaining and emotionally engaging performances I've ever witnessed musically while being significantly better than the first time seeing them live. I have been a huge fan ever since I started listening (26 years old and became a fan when I turned 8) but I felt so extremely privileged and downright lucky to be handed the opportunity to witness one of the first guitar players I was ever obsessed with and one who was essential to my development over my nineteen years of playing guitar while still utilizing a lot of the subtleties Frusciante is known for. I am so glad to have bought tickets for the show and their musical chemistry is something all musicians should witness live, my fiancee is a fan (not familiar with their live improvisation abilities going into the concert) but even she was absolutely blown away by Chad, Flea, and John's ability and chemistry when performing live together with all of the really spontaneous jamming before, during, and between all nineteen songs they played that night. I'm lucky she didn't think that I was being a complete cornball when I started to get emotional when John was playing an extended solo during "Don't Forget Me" as I never thought I'd ever be able to see the true chili peppers with one of the most personally influential guitarists in my lifetime and it is still rather emotional to me in retrospect. Chad and Flea are as tight rhythmically as they have ever been and John is getting more comfortable and into his groove with each successive performance (thankful the Detroit show was in the middle of the tour so John had time to shake off most of the rust from not playing guitar live for over a decade.)

RHCP has a funny way of using the simpler songs for singles. They did that with Unlimited Love this year. The singles they used were incredible but also the weakest material on the album (which says a lot about how good the album was). I have a feeling the rest of this record is going to be the same! John takes a lot of influence from hardcore punk and glam/ prog rock so the less is more approach has been super prominent on his contributions especially in the 2000’s.

Hey Justin, I love your videos, you are always very respectful to other artists wether you like them or not. I'm a HUGE red hot fan (asterisk tattoo and all haha) and I honestly think that the Red Hot reached their peak with Californication, which carried on to By the way and Stadium Arcadium but everything else from there has just been music "strictly for their fan base" if that makes any sense. Like we all know there is not going to be another By the Way or Dani California, songs that are so ground breaking, but they are playing safe. Which is not bad, in fact it makes sense and is perfect because that way they are still making music. However it can be frustrating for people who are not fans, but more casual to them. I really like their last album Unlimited Love and it had amazing songs and I have high hopes with this new one. One thing to note, perhaps these new albums are not their bests, but they are putting a BRUTAL live show. I have seen them three times, 2011, 2014 and this year and the energy they have now with John is unbelievable. Love your videos!

I love JOhn's subtle synth use especially the "ghost sounds" at the breakdown. I knew you'd come around to RHCP (they always do) It's not show off Brian Mayish or (Justin Hawkins) but he could if he wanted, it's more about serving the song. (i hate when ppl say that) but his synth use is a good example.

Very Marc Rebillet in that robe Justin. I have been a fan of RHCP for a while. I really loved Californication when it came out and Stadium Arcadium (if they had just released the first disc out of the two). But, at this point, I wish they would do something really off the wall and test their fan base. It’s not like they don’t have the chops. More jazz/fusion or bring in a sax player .A lot of the hooks seem really repetitive in the vocal department. Of course the songs still sound good, they just don’t surprise me anymore. I am enjoying your channel. Always positive and fun. Hope all is well!

Justin, I'm a huge fan of you and a huge fan of RHCP (one of my all-time favourite bands) 😢 Your last video on them made me sad; I don't know if I can watch this one based on the title! I love the attention you've brought to Foreigner (another one of my all-time favourites and I think critically-underrated), and I think there are so many RHCP songs that hit those same melodic, layered highs. Hard to Concentrate, Meet Me at the Corner, the entire By The Way album... I could go on. But I guess this is just one of those things where there's a fundamental difference of opinion. Still mad respect for you, and you and The Darkness remain as one of my favourites too! 🤝

Mr. Hawkins! Could you consider making a video about Alain Johannes? He is such an amazing musician and songwriter; IMO more people need to know who he is and the music he has made/produced. The beginning of this video reminded me that a few members of RHCP were Johannes’ backing band in the 80’s before RHCP were a band.

@@mf0u3021 He's stated multiple times that money are actually the thing he hates most about doing music. He obviously needs money to live, but he is really modest. He doesn't wear custom made clothes like any other Chili Pepper, doesn't own cars or motorcycles like the other three (doesn't even have a license), has played on the same guitars for the past 26 years. Also, from 2011 to 2019, he probably made around 5 million from performance royalties just sitting on his living room couch while Josh was performing the songs John wrote. The guy is super rich and his cash burn rate is super slow. He didn't come back for the money. If that was the case, he wouldn't put on stellar performances show after show.

They are great musicians. I really loved These Are The Ways from the record released in April. It hurts me to say it: Most of Unlimited Love and this feels to me like they are playing it safe. It's always about expectations, isn't it? When RHCP said John is back I expected a lot. Maybe too much?

Honestly I felt the same way at first. You just haven't listened to it enough :P My uncle played it in the car, and did a great job at making me aware there is so much more going on than I initially had thoughts. A lot of the beginnings of the songs don't keep me that entertained, but I later realized that the reason is because they're all building. John goes insane structurally in the majority of the songs. You're bound to be blown away in the second half of the songs by either insane builds, bridges, harmonies, etc! Most great music doesn't sound that great to us the first time because our brains have to process it first. Because it's so different. They tend to have that effect with every album really, then it hits you the more you listen.

I love the RHCP ever since I first heard Blood Sugar Sex Magic back in 91’ when I was 13. Blew my mind and I hadn’t heard music like that before. Interesting your liked the song on the Woodstock witch was a cover of “Fire” so not really their song per se. I do love John’s guitar but interestingly after he had his drug issues and left for a wild the first time his playing became far more minimal, almost too much for me. The harder rock funk off Mothers Milk and BSSM which sounded loose but massively precise seemed to disappear. And it changed their sound. There are glimmers of it now here and there she’s although Josh Klinghoffer seemed to almost embody John’s playing more then he did on his return John seems to have come back to his original sound a bit more now. Interested to hear the news album as they claim they got inspiration from learning some of their old songs again. Thanks for going over this new song. 👍
