In finishing these Gloomspite Gitz Squig Herd models (and earning £10 from the Hobby Bingo!) I learned a few things about the hobby. Mostly, these are things that I thought I knew, but actually was wrong about.
The first thing is that I should probably do more sub-assemblies, or at least learn to better handle my brushes so that when I have to paint somewhere tricky I'm not just making a complete mess.
This is exacerbated by the contrast paints indirectly, because the lighter undercoats used show up very easily when missed. Also, they don't seem to apply as nicely. This is probably user error.
Finally, basing - something I've never been good at, was made a lot easier with, you know, actually using basing materials.

For my bases, I tend to use the citadel paint Stirland Mud and then I either use some almost bleached-looking grass tufts, or maybe some other factions models as bits and pieces. My Knight Tyrant is wading through a muddy field of destroyed necron warriors and scarabs.

Have the same plan! Btw, do you just dump the stirland mud straight from bottle on the base? No thinning down, right? :D

So just a few suggestion, when using contrast paint for black, instead of doing the zenithal with black and white, use grey with white, the black contrast paints will pop a lot more. For crackle paint, a few things, under the crackle paint, use a gloss varnish, it’ll help the base layer stick, then over top that do a very thick coat, really glop it on for maximum crackle BONUS TIP FOR IT If you use a hair dryer, it will crackle even more

For my "badlands" bases, I brush on some watered-down PVA glue then cover the base in sand I picked up the last time I was at the beach. Real beach sand is so fine that the scale looks right. I glue on a few bits of aquarium gravel, then give the whole base a light wash of "milk chocolate" brown and burnt sienna hobby paints, just dabbing the two colors around randomly on the base. If the base is larger (50 mm or more), I'll add a little bit of undyed yellow-brown lichen I picked up in the floral department of a hobby store.

I hated doing bases so much, up until I discovered the hack that is Milliput (or any epoxy-clay) and one of those fancy rolling pins. Contrast paint over that and it's done, I don't have to worry about stupid bases anymore!

My armies are necron (which I try to do as egyptian as possible) and flesh tearers, so my bases tend to be some kind of desert. I achieve this effect with applying some pva, sticking the base in the bowl of sand while holding the model, swooshing it in there and then cleaning the sand out of places it isn't supposed to be in before applying pva again. Then I prime the model and paint it with Averland sunset, nuln oil to make the space between sand grains more pronounced and white drybrush.

I'm super happy to see you make another hobby/painting focused video! It's great to see gaining new knowledge as you paint and what the process is like for you. If you want some insights into basing, let me share with you my knowledge or at least my process when it comes to basing: With every army I want to put on the tabletop, I like to plan out my color scheme first, but I *also* want to have a strong vision for my basing scheme going into the project. "What does my army look like in their element? How can I reflect this or that aspect of the lore of the army or even a particular Subfaction I like in the basing? What can I do to push my basing beyond the *base*-ics?" These are all questions I ask myself when I set to the basing of an army. Here are some examples of basing schemes I want to implement or have implemented in some of my current army projects. Stormcast Eternals: I got into this army through the Dominion Starter Set, so I'll set my army in the Swamps of Ghur(the realm of beasts) where the narrative is taking place. I did that with a simple mixture of texture paste and grass tufts(and some water effects if I was feeling adventurous) Desciples of Tzeentch: being the Chaos God of trickery and lies, I want his servents to be spies who hide in the settlements of Order. So I made their bases Wooden Floors, formed out of coffee stirrers, painted brown, and drowned in Nuln Oil to give them an aged/dilapidated look. Gloomspite Gitz: My most recent basing accomplishment, I spent over 2 weeks working on re-basing my 60 Grots, the first minis I ever painted. I wanted to keep them in a dark cavern setting because the Gloomspite Gitz thrive in the deep, dark places. So I bought some resin flagstone floor bits, painted them to look old and brown, then applied some Vallejo Dark Earth Texture Paste, with some rocks fashioned from cork and painted to break up the visuals and add another visual element. The hardest part was the fact that I had 60 of them to glue, paint and put Texture onto. And for all of these bases, the process wasn't *too* taxing(except the 60 Grots). You just need a strong vision and the right tools. Because a good base, or one that you're proud of can really elevate a model in more ways than 1. I hope all of this helps, and I thank you for coming to my Ted-Talk.

For my White Scars bases, I have a few things, and though it sounds complicated, I think it comes out really well. What I use is some ripped up cork board for any rocks or height, the inside of tea bags mixed with Elmer's glue for a ground cover, some grass and flower tufts for pops of color, and finally a light, medium, and dark set of brown pigment powders to tie the whole base (and the model on it) together.

I painted the majority of my 5k army of gloomspite in 2 months and can fully say they are very fun to finish. Yes, I also used gamer grass neon on the bases. I can fully recommend an airbrush because thet make the base colors SO much easier to apply so you only have to worry about the details. Furthermore, zenithal highlighting us such a useful tool. You install your shadows first and use a method similar to contrast with your other colors to make it look good. Add details and be done. I've gotten addicted to finishing things and now have a good chunk of an ork army done this week with many more in the chamber. Greenskins of all kinds really allow you to be as creative as the hobby is intended because even if you mess up, they're supposed to look janky, so you just throw some more grime in. Its all very liberating.

So far I've made a couple custom decorations out of polymer clay I had and one way I have done mud is just using a heavier amout of paint to make it look like a muddy war-torn environment which has been good for my deathguard. Another touch I added that would only really be for nurgle themed models is trailing glue behind them and then glazing it green.

I made the choice to do clean cobblestone streets for my Guard and I decided to cut thousands of tiny identical styrene tiles which does look a lot crisper than doing greenstuff rollers but is also very time consuming. I think inorganic bases look better when they're flat and identical and with Guard I really don't want them to look too different.

As someone who also hates basing, Vallejo texture paste is a godsend. Gloomspite: Thick mud, drybrush lighter brown, glue static grass. Nurgle (MoN,DG,CK): Thick Mud, lighter brown drybrush, paint green pools, dry grass tufts. Orks: Brown Earth, drybrush with dark sand Necrons: Dark Earth, drybrush light grey Space Dwarfs: Dark Earth, drybrush light grey, slap some glue & spackle mix for snow on. Nids: Thick Mud, paint brown-red, drybrush red->orange Salamanders: Dark Earth, carve out lava cracks, drybrush grey, paint cracks red->orange->yellow Honestly the only issue I have now is I'm still not 100% on the Orks yet...but at least I can base them and be fine with it. (also Vallejo texture paste has added benefit where I can get a 200ml tub for about $10 vs GW's 24ml pots for $8)

If I can recommend something insane sounding, that I was once recommended and absolutely love : "Pet Reptile Substrate, Coconut Husk Brick(s)" - If you can take the time to break up the material (its pretty tough at first) you get some awesome looking mixed basing material. It can be broken down to a sand-like texture, the fibrous material can be sifted out to make grasses/roots etc, some of the bigger flaky material looks like small leaves - its just pretty awesome stuff, and only costs about $7 for a brick, which believe me, is a HUGE amount. Plus, it's just a pleasant color as is, so you can choose if you want to paint it or not, looks really good with the tufts you mentioned in the video.

Little late but glad I found your channel as it’s just fun watching and listening. Got my massive pile of shape in shelves because I love building more than anything but I’m working on my sisters and just like you they don’t go on their bases to paint the inner robes. It would be a nightmare having them glued down but I also kinda cheat by having some resin base toppers I found so they are walking across sandstone and everything else. It has little roses, pipes to fallen pillars and just Ugh so much easier and uniform for the army. Gamer grass is indeed amazing and will help as I add a little piece of moss/green here and there on every base to break up from the black/white/red and tan every where.

When I base I usually do it right after putting the mini onto the base, I'll cover the base in mod podge (you can use pva glue as well), then shove it into my small container of sand and pebbles that I stole from a local playground then I prime the model to seal all of it onto the base after the glue dries.

For bases I do sand with stones and skulls and things, and dry brush the lot before I paint the rest of the model. I find it easier (and waaayy faster / less stressful) to clean up little mistakes on the base than go back and painting my models entire crotch again. Plus when the model is done, the base is also done and it’s not a chore at the end when your ready to move on.

I highly recommend getting geek gamings basing glue and basing sand. Both of these could be substituted with simple pva glue and some sand you just grabbed but they definitely have their advantages. The glue actually stays tacky after drying which makes the materials ontop stick really well and the sand being pre-made is extremely fine and easy to use.

I opt for dirt bases most of the time if something fancy isn't a part of the model. (And even then, am probably incorporating dirt in some capacity for uniformity.) To make it work I went in my yard to a dirt patch on a dry day and collected a plastic container's worth of small/fine dirt. Then for the basing I cover the base in tacky glue, open the container, and swirl the model around until it's all covered. If it looks a bit too flat I'll pick some small stones out of the container and manually add them. My GSC proxy army is effectively Skaven but 40k so they get the normal dirt treatment. My CSM army get the dirt too but to set them apart I drown the base in excessive Agrax so that it keeps a wet look when it dries and makes the base look like mud. My 1KS army and Necrons both get a more involved method. I mixed various household stuff like baking soda and sugar / etc. to swap in instead of the dirt then paint it with different shades of tan to simulate desert. Process needs work though.

Started using pigments for my bases, and i also use a bit on the models feet/ cloacks, so they blend in more with the base. Just using a (matt)varnish followed by applying the pigmenst with a horrible brush makes it stick like very fine dirt.

I feel I kind of have it easy, with Underworlds being my main game system - all the bases are sculpted, and often with lovely detail of vines, roots, cobblestones, and even diorama-worthy scenes such as sewers. On the rare occasion I paint something that's not a Warhammer Underworlds warband, I have a standard method of gluing on sand; painting it all over in P3's Battlefield Brown; drybrushing it with P3's Hammerfall Khaki; and then finally liberally gluing on standard Spring/Summer green flock.

Yep, those Gamers Grass are fantastic! When using Citadel texture paints I 'goop' (technical term) them up so there are variations in the I suppose topography of the base. I leave them to dry forever to avoid mixing wet paint around and screwing up the look. Then I'll apply a drybrush to give visual definition, followed by a wash or two, then rim. Example: I have gold Necrons with purple shoulders and metallic grey guns sporting a nice 'orange solar energy' look. I base with astrogranite and the clumps make nice bumpy moon terrain. I drybrush with an off-white to give it a bit of volume before washing it with blue, a dash of a purple wash in the little pools, and adding some pinkish gamer's grass. I rim with grey. Very pleasing result! I'm loving the casual journal that is your channel! A great switch up from the many 'this is my 20 years experience tutorial to paint your models as best as airbrushingly possible' channels YT sends my way

For myself, if I don't go hog wild with Vallejo terrain goop (aka terrain paste) and cork, I tend to just go for pre-made easy peasy solutions where I just add glue to the base, dunk the base, shake off the excess, add a second layer of clear glue after, and then add on tufts. It's quick and relatively painless, plus can look good. Geek Gaming Scenics is a place I want to order a few things from, even if shipping will be painful to Canada. I've gone somewhat overboard on several of my bases though, especially for armies I knew would only ever see the shelf...

While I have a similar problem with painting, I’ve always enjoyed basing and I’m not quite sure why. I think because it’s the last part of the model and there’s a lot less detail on bases it goes much quicker? For my desert bases i pva glue some sand on and then cover the thing in that aggrelan stuff, before painting over it a sand colour and dry brush it with a slightly lighter one. My concrete bases are similar, sand, gw astrogranite, grey paint, light grey dry brush, and finally gw snow if I’m feeling fancy. Those tufts do look like a good idea though.

I do my bases from a scale modeler standpoint. I came in to this hobby from doing Gundam and Tamiya scale modeling, so a lot of my expertise is in larger, true to scale minis. My tau army theme is "Space invaders" 60's esque, except the tau themselves are a modern military alien force in a 60's era city. My basing is city streets I've created with Tamiya landscaping materials, brick kits, lamp posts, trash, rubble, concrete barricades and even anti tank traps. After I've done my model the base is actually the second thing I work on. I have to pose the model around the base and then paint it, which means I have to come up with an idea for a base first. For my coldstar commander, it was already in its pose from the box. So instead of having stand on the rubble from the sprue, I had it standing in front of a toppled concrete barricade and then added highway debris around it as it was flagging the troops onward. One of my favorite crisis suits is vaulting off of a damaged lamppost, with thrusters burning off like it was mid jump. I really like to tell a story with my minis, and basing to me is one of my favorite parts because that's how I tell the story. For my Dark kraken space marine army, it was much simpler. The Dark Krakens are fighting on a frozen tundra planet in lore, so I just had to look up basing material for frozen landscapes. This is where I think you'll find much more success with your Agrellan Earth. I used a combination of Valejo Diorama Effect ground texture and agrellan Earth BEFORE PRIMING the base. I got the texture paint and ground texture dry and in a shape I liked, then primed the base separate from the model. I pinned my space marines and painted them, then painted my tundra bases. I dry brushed them how I liked, then drilled out where the marines would sit. (I actually did this before I even put down the texture paint, forgot about that.) Then I just glued everything together. The Citadel texture stuff is ok, but I would recommend using it as if you were going to paint it anyway, so you can get a coat of primer on it and make sure it stays where it's meant to.

Hey, if you haven't discovered it I would highly recommend "slapchop" it's not new persay, but it definitely helps with contrast painting. There are better videos then this explaination but here it is. Prime the model completely black (which you love!). Then, drybrush with a grey or light grey, or such as a medium tone. (Best start with white but people have experimented with blue for the first step!) After drybrushing the entire model, drybrush with white all over, especially hitting the more "natural light" areas. It's drybrushing on your zenethal. I much prefer it given the rattle can is hit or miss.

Geek Gaming makes a bunch of base ready mixes that are amazing; basically they're a mix of flock, tiny rocks, and other bits to give the appearance of whatever environment you want. They have urban ones, desert ones, rn I'm using a forest mix for my space marines that lean heavily into the "knights in space" aesthetic. Sure, you can go down to the beach and get sand or little rocks or things but I always felt like that struggled to fit into the scale of 40k, and these don't have that issue. As an added bonus all your gamers grass tufts look *amazing* put on top of their mixes!

I found a cheat for doing great, easy bases when I painted up some Custodes and realised I hadn't considered what the base would be AT ALL. This method works particularly well with Imperium units but could probably be adapted to a number of other types of cities, but I have noticed that GW's black bases are particularly similar in texture to tarmac roads. So my Imperium armies are now all based to be fighting in an urban centre or city or whatever. Often I'll use Sector Imperialis bases so I don't have to think too hard, but that's not always an option. For models where I use the default black bases for, I paint the base in Mechanicum Grey, add road markings/floor writing/imperial signage on in white, then bathe the thing in Nuln Oil and Agrax Earthshade and maybe throw some Blood For The Blood God splatters on afterwards if I'm feeling flavourful. The end result is an incredibly easy and very lovely looking urban centre base.

Primarily I play tyranids. They consume bio mass and basically anything alive and colourful on a planet. So basing my my group is easy. Step 1: White glue and sand on the base. Don’t worry If it covers feet a bit they are kicking up dirt anyway as they run. Wait for this to dry. Step 2: 1-1 water and white glue to seal in the sand and rocks. Wait for this to dry. Great for procrastinating and working on more fun stuff. Optional step 2.5: superglue some spare bits from defeated foes on the base. Skulls, weapons, or helmets or whatever. Step 3: Prime in black. Step 4: Blue is grey dry brush on the sand. Leave a lot of black showing through. Step 5: 2-1 blue ish grey and white dry brush over the blue is grey. Avoid the underside of the model. That indicates shadow. Step 6: 1-1 blue ish grey and white. Dry brush again. Mostly around the outer areas of the base and highest piles of sand. Step 7: lightly dry brush your model with the 1-1 mix. This pre highlights and pre shades your model. Great for speed painting troopers. Step 8: Paint the bits you glued on earlier. The colours can be swapped but honestly the result is the same for dirt sand grass whatever.

I hate basing, and personally would love to figure out how to have the models either freestanding or on clear bases (I feel like the board should have the cool terrain look) . . . but ignore that and let's talk about the one nice base set I did. Basically a texture paste (I used Monument Hobbies fine texture paste, but basically grainy goop), then paint a gradient from model front to back. In specific I did a bright orange down to a deep brown/black, so it looked like the model was running into a more bright scene. (The colors matched the fire they had, but there wasn't any OSL or any fancy stuff, just a gradient of color)

@@PaulIsBadAtStuff Yeah, I think it's usually a more expensive plastic (at least it's different plastic) and most of the ones I can find are either too thin or don't balance as well, let alone trying to get them to stand in their feet. So, black bases or a gradient work well, and if they're consistent it's generally good.

I only ever do bases when the model has a really large base like my knights and the greater demons I’ve collected. My knights are usually towering over wrecked daemon engines, I’ve actually bought a mailer fiend, built it, painted it, and then went at it with a jigsaw and a 17HMR rifle and placed its wreckage at the feet of my Knight Paladin. My bloodthirster has a trio of decapitated ultramarines that are made of leftover parts that I’ve chopped up with a cleaver and dangled the unhelmeted heads from the belt of the bloodthirster. My Keeper of Secrets has Repentia sisters sans chainswords dancing around its feet, wearing pink and purple strips of cloth. Haven’t built a great unclean one or a lord of change yet though

i dont really do bases and have been dreading it for a bit cuz i chose moon ground because im doing space dwarves and so no shrubs for me, though i've gotten in a very nice painting rythim which i think might work for those adhd'd fools about, i liked to do painting in lil bits, like load up a podcast or an album and pain for like an hour or two max, take a break do some gaming or chill out, then whenever i feel like it later in the day i return to it and continue the grind, maybe end up with like 3 sessions of painting across the day, varying in lengths ofcourse just as long as i vibe with it, its probably slower than most painting but its been quite nice and relaxin

For me it depends on the model. Sometimes I buy special pre sculpted bases and just paint em all fancy. Sometimes I try to make some stuff with milliput or just use a texture paste

I feel that bit about the white spray paint. I've got a sisters of battle army and I'm doing with with white armor. Doing the tabards is a right pain and mistakes are easy to make, very visible, and because it's white you have to try and get into those nooks. Sigh. They look great though

I quite enjoy basing and am constantly experimenting, my first set of bases were just very fine sand glued onto the assembled minis base before priming, I just painted it with a "Sahara Desert" Paint I got from a sale of my LGS. I learned the fine sand was to a bit too close to the already textured base from GW. So for the second batch I added some mini stones as well which I painted as stones and drybrushed with the Sand colour. And then I tried som coarser sand which really worked great as gravel with layers of grey built on each other for my Humans and as some sort of alien planet with a red base coat and again the Sahara Sand as a drybrush. I am currently also working on some industrial floor which consists of cardboard, zip ties and other random junk plastic.

I have some crumbling (limestone?) landscaping stones so i used the layers to add broken rock to some Squighog Boys and because I had the models glued already it looked HORRIBLE. I also had a huge issue with crackle medium - after 2 misfites I completely gave up!

Crackle paint like Agrellan Earth takes practice to figure out the amount to put, too little and its underwhelming and too much and the paint cracks off. For beginners I would recommend dirt texture like Stirland Battlemire, glob however much you want on, simple wash with Aggrax Earthshade and a quick drybrush with Zandri Dust is the way I did it when I first started.

For my bases i normally just go to a park or gardean and put dirt in a bag Then i let it dry out for a day or two After i go in with gloves and take off the top layers (thats where most of the large clumps are) Then i put pva on the base dunk into a bowl of dirt Finally i spray black and paint whatever colour I need

I use agrellan earth on all my Tau models and paint green down below, cover it in PVA and let it dry. Slap on thickly the Agrellan and as there's not a lot of grip the cracks come out big showing the green below which is a neat and easy effect

That's a cool idea. I think if I'd painted a darker base colour under the Agrellan it wouldn't have looked so off when it did the big cracks. Thanks for the tip!

If you want a properly easy and uniform bases whilst all of them being slightly different and random then I highly recommend the "Base Ready" range by Geek Gaming. Literally all you do is cover the base in PVA glue then swirl it around in your base material of choice. Done. Of course they're probably not going to win a golden demon but they're more than good enough for what most people want.

For Agrellan Earth, you need to paint the bases in a flat color first (not just primer), otherwise the crackles will fall off. I learned that through bitter experience. Once that layer is dry, just slap the Agrellan on in varying thickness and it should look good.

you can also put down a layer of watered down pva glue or paint on some gloss varnish and let that dry before putting the agrellan earth on top. I's given me much more consistent results

I put a base coat first, then apply the agrellan earth. Once is fully dry, i mix pve glue with water and put a layer (especially between the cracks), so i can drybrush safely.

For agrellan earth it helps if you paint the base with normal brown paint first then put the agrellan earth on top on really thick. I found if you paint it first it helped the crackle paint not flake off as much.

When you use a crackling material, you need to paint under it first. Some parts will fall down inevitably. When you see hard to reach parts, paint them first, you will neat the crap afterwards when you paint the surrounding areas who are easy to teach. If somehow some areas are hard to reach and should be painted in 2 or more colors, paint the whole thing black and let it be. In miniature painting, black and white are not base colors. They are shades or highlights. A white cloak is mostly light gray (blueish gray works well), a black cloth is mostlydark grey.

I despise basing with every fiber of my rat being. I used to find sand, rocks and sticks. Make stone blocks by cutting up a sanding sponge. Put work into it. Now I just print them. 1000x easier. As for painting stuff behind stuff, I wish I could say I just ignore it, like I'm supposed to, leave it black, say it's shadowed. But I don't. I can't for some reason. So my advice is paint the model inside out. That is too say, paint the deepest darkest impossible to get to parts, and move outward until you're painting easy stuff. It'll reduce the need to repaint things. But it won't eliminate it sadly.

You know, I never really thought about working in to out. I generally work in sections (skin, armour, weapons etc.) or colour by colour, and in both cases there's nothing stopping me going after the hardest parts first. I think because I just want to get paint onto the model, I start with the first part I see which is usually a big flat easily accessed panel!

tbh most of the time i end up doing the bases first since most times its much faster to sit down for like 1-2h and finish 10 bases than to start tackling an actual model only to realise you dont have enough time. As for what i do ive found the cork and drybrush method to be quite good and fast , just glue on randomly torn pieces of cork sheet to the base , prime it , go over with a grey on the darker side , and drybrush with a lighter grey and some pure white. For my Tsons i added some bright violet bushes cuz they looked tzeentchy enough , and form my nids i added some greenstuff orbs and randomg tethers to represent eggs or biomass connencting the stone. The most elaborate thing ive done is make my hive tyrants base like a deathclaw nest with a small cave like structure some bones and eggs that are bursting with some leftover rippers, it can be pretty fun if you have a little story behind it
@PaulIsBadAtStuff
@PaulIsBadAtStuff Жыл бұрын
If I wasn't so impatient, doing the bases first is the best way to do it! Like you say, it's easier to get through a bunch of bases at once, especially without any models on them. Your bases sound really cool, especially the Hive Tyrant base!
