Mobile phones are the new security blanket

Dude, you hit a nail on the head. The age of smartphones/tablets has everyone addicted, and all the corporations require you to use it to access or perform basically anything anymore. I studied urban planning and even postwar sprawl didn’t hit all these generations that hard that soon in terms of harming social life.

I hate phones so much and see it as a violation of my freedom that living without a smart phone is now virtually impossible. I tried to get rid of mine but it was required for the two factor authentication for work. Shouldnt it be up to me whether i have a smart phone? My life went downhill back in 2014 with my first smartphone. Yes its a problem (im a millennial born in 89)

It's rude as fuck to lose yourself in your phone after sex. It's avoidant behavior. It's like going from everything to nothing. Confusing. It also seems to be the way culture is going, so you can't take it personally.

Ironically, the people who use their phones like umbilical cords are often people who actually haven't much in the way of social contacts on their phones. They are just doing it to either act like they are "popular" or as an escape from actual communication with whoever they are with. These are the same guys who communicate on hook-up apps with "''Sup?" and "How are you doing?" and other off-putting communication non-starters. A surprising number of young men on hook-up apps are actually fearful of hook-ups for this very reason and that is what accounts for a lot of the "ghosting" and "flaking". As an older gay man with daddy appeal I get a lot of come-ons from young men on hook-up sites, many of whom are pathetic catfishers. Here are a few of their openers: "Hi sweetheart", "Hello cutie", etc. (Sorry, I do NOT relate to "cute" as an over 60 gay man). They talk like old lounge lizards from the 1950s trying to pick up floozies in a Holiday Inn cocktail lounge., LOL.. You hit the nail on the head, they are "awkward" because they have spent waaaay too much time on social media and way too little time interacting with others in real life. Ironically, "smart phones" are creating a generation of young men devoid of social intelligence.

When "SmartPhones" were first sold to the public, they (Steve Jobs) told us "THIS SMARTPHONE is what we all dreamed of having all our lives". Ummm no. Mainly, I'm NOT going to be told that a product; a "smartphone" ... is something that I dreamed of having all my life". I'm boycotting the product while seeing most people around me become brainwashed. This may sound extreme, but I blame the product - and for what it has done to our society. Owners of the "smartphone" are under it's spell and they don't realize it.

Times have changed so much. I enjoy life so much by being old school. I spark up conversations on the bus or while I am shopping, just being out in public. Funny fun fact...... I went to a retail store and went to pay for my purchases with a check. The cashier was a young girl and asked me what it was I was handing her, she told me she never saw one and had to call the manager up😮 hope you are having a great time celebrating pride 🌈 an engage with lots of other handsome men at the events.

I think you're right about what will be the effect on these newer generations who don't socialize normally. The emotional and psychological effects that it could have. Isolation is not good for people. You can change technology, but you can't change biological makeup. Humans are social beings. We do need it to be happy and healthy. The amount of it varies person to person, but we do all need to have social interaction. Maybe that's why we have more and more of these mass tragedies being committed. You get these young kids who are already bullied or they don't have the emotional and social support they need to be stable, add on top of that, Isolation and you get a depressed, angry, unhappy generation of young people who's biggest validation is social media. Which is not a healthy place to get your self-worth from. So I see why it's so worrying. Not just dating-wise, but just in all aspects of society.

I share your concerns, I have not been back to the USA in seven years. I now live in Thailand. Very social here,everyone is out and about interactive with others in joy,smiles and kindness. And yes,everyone has phones but rarely in lieu of human interaction. I'm quite a bit older than you, I lived in Miami for ten years back in the 80's even back then Initiating a conversation with a stranger could result in a response of "you must have me confused with somebody who gives a f***" I once hooked up with a Cuban who actually answered the phone during sex. A land line,no cell phones then.

Globally you are right, but i think there is a trap there: People always distracted themselves in public spaces. Reading a newspaper, playing cards, drawing etc. but most of these things now happend on screens. So a full metro everybody on their phone looks wierd and depressing, but some are working, some are reading, some are playing games, some are connecting to their loved once home…. I think its a bit high brow do condem a whole generation because of that. Hanging out with younger people, i realized the have much more of a social connection to each other, because the know how toxic social media is.

Keven I do enjoy your rants! I even agree with most of what you say. I am worried about how technology is impacting society at all levels. As for young people, (those under 40) I wonder what advantage they have because of technology and what disadvantages that come along with that technology. What are the impacts on the development of social skills and knowledge. Overall, the young know far more about certain subjects than we older people knew at their age. They even have social knowledge that some of us are still learning. However, I worry that they are not learning enough about how to have positive and impactful interactions with their peers and elders. Everything gets better with practice, and if the opportunity for practice is missing, learning will be limited. I congratulate you on your interest in improving the lot of your generation. On another note, you do have beautiful eyes and when you look directly in the camera, your passion bursts through the screen...like you are talking directly to us your audience. I noticed the phone dependency/fixation over ten years ago, like 2011 it started to get bad, people got so antisocial. This definitely started as a millennial problem. They are so used to conforming to everything. They literally conformed to social dysfunction and isolation lmao.

It’s not you. Gen Z is very this way. It comes from them growing up with parents that use screens as babysitters. TV was a communal experience but phones atomize everyone.

I think a lot of times, people look at their phone to fill awkward silences. Gen Z...they grew up on devices. I don't think they see it as a rude thing to be on their phones all the time. Not saying it's socially appropriate. But I think to them it's nothing. Side note: you look good in this video.

Not only is everyone on their phones constantly, even when they communicate with others they don't actually speak to them, they text. It's a global social evolutionary step that technology has made available and that everyone has embraced. People's phones have become their life, so to speak. And it's a cliché to say, but there's no going back.

I have had a lot of the same experiences in hook up culture. I have a lot to say about it. You should do one of your interview shows with just a normal gay person like a chat show.

I _don’t_ find it depressing. Our phones are parts of ourselves at this point, extensions of our brains if you will, and maybe this is just me, but I don’t interpret it as necessarily rude or indicative of wanting to be distant. I think we’re just going to have to adapt and get better at interjecting, maybe plan phone-free dates and events and agree to those terms with the group ahead of time.

It might surprise you to learn that I am one of 17 people left in the United States that adamantly refuses to use a cell phone. So many people have congratulated me when I tell them this. And it's so odd to objectively observe, as you did, how others are both so attached (to their cell phone) and detached (from each other).

Keven it is not in your mind. This has been going on since the pandemic. It just got worse. People lack the social skills and do not know how to interact with others. I say this as a professional in higher education academics. I tell students all the time people want to interact with you. Please do not hide behind email or a web camera. I do not want to have conversation with you on a webcam. People are glued to their phones. It is because of technology, people are losing the ability to interact with others. I was driving to work the other day. I said we walk around with computers in our hands and not engaging each other. The phone is more than just a phone. People must get the ability to interact and engage others back. The social skills are indeed lacking. You said it from your experience. It was like he made you feel afterwards. It impacts us all. Technology has made life easier, but created new problems.

The millenials and older are generally fine, but the Gen Z and Alpha generations have been raised in a digital environment, their parents give them iPads when they're barely walking. They stopped teaching cursive in Canada in 2006 in schools because people want to have kids to move into a digital age and hand writing will be less and less used. Now putting technology in the hands of young kids cause them to link to the technology for their development, thechnology is what they trust, not people. It also disconnects them from reality (and prevents their parents from giving them proper education and manners), and also the speed the information is transmitted on those devices causes kids to develop ADHD issues, having a conversation becomes irrelevant because it's too slow to get the information they want as opposed to their tech, so they will more and more not be into socializing. So Gen Z is only the tip of the iceberg regarding what's coming with the alphans. And brace yourself, the alphans or their kids are going to take care of you when you're very old, that's the scariest part, imagine an alphan nurse giving an elderly patient his pills, saying oh, he's always getting white pills, i gave him one and now he starts acting weird..... not knowing that white the pill they gave him is for. If parents keep putting technology in the hands of kids under the age of let's say 10-12 years old, let me tell you, it will be a total mess. And by the way, taking his phone after "fun" is not as bad as "during fun", I got one like this once, I was like Jesus, aren't you interrested in whatever I'm doing to you right now! I could write a novel about this, but in the end, I'd say, brace yourself, the best is yet to come.
