I'm a dressmaker in my fifties, so by now I've made every mistake out there, but the one that sent me into shock was when I was making an enormous altar cover for a cathedral. It needed eight metres of brocade that was about 200€/metre. I made a careful diagram of the most economical way to cut the pieces so that the brocade design could be perfectly matched up, & then made the first cut with the fabric design running in the opposite way. I sat still for about ½ hour wondering if I could salvage the situation, or if I would be 100s of euros out of pocket on that job. In the end, I recentred the brocade design & found a solution. That was over 10 years ago, but my stomach still cramps when I think of it. Your gown is so beautiful!

To anyone who is planning on purchasing from Established Titles, please do research beforehand as it has just been called out as a scam just recently. Some people are also concerned that they also lied about planting trees too. Also, I love how poofy and big the skirt is :0

One of the most frustrating mistake I’ve made lately is making a tulle and sequins dress with lots of hand gatherings, struggling with the layers of organza doing their own thing. Etc etc. And then, when the dress was finally finished and perfectly done, so proud of my work,I thought it needed a final press to make it even better and I MELTED THE FABRIC ! On the bust part ! I’m still mad with myself ! Something I also hate is catching a bit of fabric you’re not supposed to while you sew … with an overlocker

My mom and I are major crafters and my niece takes after us. When she was 3-5, she would get so upset when something she wanted to make or draw didn't turn out the way she wanted. (I'm talking, pipe cleaners and markers, nothing prodigy-level lol). One day, I realized that at the young age of 5, she was comparing her crafts with my and my mom's crafts, so I told her that the biggest part of being crafty was figuring out how to cover up mistakes. The other day, at the ripe old age of 6, she was showing me in excruciating detail how she'd made a Christmas house out of a paper bag and casually mentioned that the off-centre doorknob was originally a mouse but it didn't turn out so she made it a doorknob. Such a little thing but I couldn't have been more thrilled that she's already learning something that took me nearly 30 years to accept.

I can't count the number of times I've come home from work tired and decided "I'll work on this hem/seam hand sewing" and sewn it to my clothes. Then I have to unpack 0.5 yard or more and start over again.

My most stupid mistake was when I was sewing a princess seamed bodice together and I sewed a sleeve on backwards (so the seam was outside). I unpicked a seam and pulled the fabric apart, only to realise I'd picked apart one of the princess seams. I swore for a bit and then hastily sewed that back together - the wrong way. I swore some more, unpicked the princess seam and sewed it back together the right way, attached my other sleeve and then sewed up the side seams. I then realised I hadn't actually fixed the original backwards sleeve so I had to unpick all the side seam and take the sleeve off to put it back in the right way. When I finally managed to get the cursed thing put together properly, I wore it once and decided the waist was too high so it made me look thick through the middle and the colour just doesn't look good against my skin tone. That dress is currently shoved in a bag somewhere and one day I will gleefully set it on fire. Amazing work on this dress, I can't imagine how much work went into it but it looks truly incredible!

Best way to remove blood from fabric is to use hydrogen peroxide. I used this a lot when I first started hand embroidering. That dress looks like so much fun to wear. Thank you for creating such fun things for us to look at.

When I used to work on wedding gowns in a shop I learned to use hydrogen peroxide to remove bl00d stains from white fabric. We also used to use alcohol based hand sanitizer to remove ball point pen ink. Works like magic!

Hey Ariel, this skirt is beautiful and I can’t wait to see the costumes you’ll make with it! One thing I wanted to say though is that established titles is a really scammy company. This has only recently come out so you’re probably not aware of it. Basically, they sell souvenir plots of land which means that in scots law you don’t actually get the ownership of those plots. Secondly, you don’t actually get the official title of laird/lord/lady if you just own a small plot of land(scottish court has made a statement about this). Also, the plots they sell are quite far away from major cities so they are unlikely to be developed (destroying woodlands) and there is no real evidence that they are actually planting trees. Basically, it’s a scam. A lot of KZfaqrs have fallen for it so don’t feel too bad but you should probably cut ties with the company.

Bleeding into your projects is the payment sewers made to the Costume Gods, looks fantastic!

I made a nice edwardian summer blouse out of linen. First time doing sleeve plackets, but I was super happy how they turned out. Until I realized I made two right sleeves. I had not flipped the other sleeve piece to make a left sleeve. I could not be bothered to make another placket, possibly a very ugly one since I'd rip it first off the sleeve. Instead I slashed the sleeve into two, flipped the top part, and hid the seam in a pintuck. Add pintucks to right sleeve and no one might know I originally had two right sleeves. Unless you look at the back and notice that both plackets point to the right, but it's in the back. If it works, you're good.

I used to do alterations and I always warned interns to think twice before cutting when hemming pants. Right after explaining it to them I grabbed a pair of pants that had to be shortened by 8cm and started cutting 8cm off, leaving no fabric to make a hem. In the end I called the customer, stitched a ribbon on top of the cut part and hemmed it ever so slightly shorter. It wasn't a huge deal in the end but my heart stopped for a second. As for my own projects, I have definitely cut out and sewn an entire dress with the print running upside down.

Even the tips on balancing an elliptical crinoline with weights at the front made me happy and that’s before you even break out the light fabric xxx

All the best magical items seem to require some kind of blood sacrifice, Ariel just likes to throw in a little bit of her own, along with all of the sweat and tears when she goes about making her own.

stupidest mistake i ever made: i was hemming some pants years ago. not the first pair i had done, certainly not the last. i folded up the bottom, pinned it up to figure out the length... and then cut following the bottom edge that i had folded up. i sat staring at what i had done for about 10 minutes before i attempted to sew the bottom back on, but it just didn't work. i had to scrap the pants 😭 also this dress is absolutely lovely ❤

I'm in my early days of sewing, so I am pretty sure my biggest mistakes are still out there lurking... The most frustrating thus far was my first time using a dyed wool and I didn't wash it well enough initially. The color started bleeding the first time I wore it from sweat. Then, when I did give it a long soak to even out the colors, the color matched buttons faded! It is not the nice piece I was hoping for, but still wearable around home. That is if I can suppress being annoyed with the sight of it... 😅 This glowing skirt of yours looks great and I am excited to see what you do with it.

My most despair-inducing mistake was while making my fiancée’s wedding dress so the stakes were already HIGH. I’d done loads of fittings, made everything beautifully, in expensive ivory silk. I’d been worried about making my first strapless gown but the boning worked beautifully. Instead, I had also mid-measured the hem so it was hopelessly wonky, several inches off the ground in places. I don’t know how I made the mistake but seeing it I just sat on the floor in despair. I ended up adding a hem border with scraps of the main fabric and I don’t think anyone except me noticed.

I've been sewing for over a year now, and my least facourite mistake has been forgetting to mirror pattern pieces! Like in a matching top and pants set I made in a geometric print, I cut two identical front leg pieces 🙈 Luckily I had JUST ENOUGH fabric to re-cut it mirrored, and I could use the mistake piece for the shirt's inner yoke 🍀🧵 Gorgeous video, Ariel! I showed it to my parrot and she was very interested!

So for the blood on fabric, saliva works really well. You soak a little ball of thread with it, and then rub it on your bloodstain, the enzymes will digest it. Well, part of it, but still, rather efficient.

There’s not enough space here to mention all of my mistakes. I have a motto, though, in my sewing room - it’s not a project until the seem ripper comes out. The skirt looks amazing! ❤

Hot chocolate is an ideal way to regain your strength before figuring out how to fix a problem like that! I love how you show your mistakes on your projects -- seeing your work still come out so pretty in the end helps encourage me to keep going when my stuff goes off the rails. My worst sewing mistake has to be trying to tailor a pair of wide-leg pants to be closer-fitting before I understood how important grain lines are. I cut off a bunch of fabric before I realized I'd twisted up the legs. 😩

My most stupid mistake so far has proably been the one time I made a cosplay jacket, it turned out great. Then I had to wash it, and turns out I was supposed to wash the fabric before making anything out of it because it shrinks. As you can guess, once I washed it, the jacket didn't fit me anymore. No one told me to wash the fabric first, and since I don't have much experience yet with different fabrics, I wasn't aware of this... So not an actual sewing mistake, but one made before it.

I took a pattern draping class with a woman who had been a tailor for Alexander McQueen and had made jackets for Rhianna and Beyonce to wear on the cover of Vogue. She said the best way to remove blood from white fabric was saliva! Though I think you need to do that before it dries too much.

A tailors' tip for fresh blood on fabric!! Gather up some saliva in your mouth and then use a cotton swab or a piece of fabric to rub it into the fresh stain. It works wonders, I swear! And it is only gross if people know what happened hehehe Also! According to my Mäster, it has to be the same person's blood and saliva. I have not tested that theory tho 😁

my most annoying sewing mistake was when I pinned a hood on a cape the wrong way, so the seam was on the outside. This was on the day of the finale of a local drag contest I was in. Funny thing is, I wasn't the one sewing, I asked my mom for help, because there was a lot to do in not a lot of time (situation out of my control). So I just pinned the thing and gave it to mom while I worked on other things, and she sewed it without question. When we realized what happened? At least I can always rely on my trusty glue gon. I glued a ribbon and some crystals over the seam. And it turned out okay, one of my better looks.

One of my first sewing projects was a turtle neck, but I messed the neckline up so I had too little for the actual neck part to sew on. After a little moment of despair I decided to make cut outs on both sides of the neck and have the remaining fabric ruffed to the shoulder. Probably no one can image how it looks like cause of my poor description but it turned out very unique looking and I got compliments for it! Just like I really want to compliment you on this extraordinary fantastic project!

it's so pretty and I'm sure it will work for many different costumes! As for sewing mistakes, my second ever sewing project was a full on 1890's corset consisting of 14 pieces (x3 if we count the lining and interfacing) and I was still so unfamiliar with their shapes that I ended up connecting some of the pieces the wrong way, sewing some upside down, then unpicking the seams and sewing them again.... in another wrong way. And when I finally got it right I realized that the fabric I used was definitely not sturdy enough for a corset when it started ripping near the seams after a couple hours of wear 😶

It seems it actually is a very annoying life's law to run out of thread just before you finish up 😂 thanks for including the times you make mistakes, it's weirdly inspiring to see the struggles we all go through when working in any project, not only the squeaky clean videos you usually see. In the 80s as a teen fashionista, I sewed my own denim fringed jacket. After hours of cutting/ sewing the totally awesome jacket, I acid washed/ distressed the too perfect dark denim. Then threw it in the dryer. It came out as a giant ball of denim thread! The hand pulled denim fringe had tangled up and ripped the jacket to pieces. Devistated at the loss of expensive materials and hard work 😭

We’re all fallible. Some of us just aren’t as trained to avoid those derps. It’s me. I’m derps. Stupid sewing mistakes: - sewing two left side sleeves for a blouse with a taper. …didn’t fix it - accidentally putting the bottom of a hanging sleeve at the top. That along with realizing I couldn’t move my arms once the sleeves were on made me put that piece away and I’ve not touched it in two years (using the smallest stitch setting made me just not want to deal with any seam ripping. …there are more I just don’t want to think about them right now. 😂

We have a saying in Sweden... That if you bleed on your garment when you are sewing it, you will have a good time when you wear it.

I think it would be a cool idea to add a bodice of a very opaque fabric that extends down far enough to rest over the illuminated skirt, and the bottom edge to the bodice part could makes a silhouetted shape from the lights. Like a city skyline (with lit widows cut out?) or a cutout geometric shape or maybe a nature scene to go with the mushroom addition. Heck, You could make a few different over-layers for different themes! Lovely project!

a Crumb Catcher bustline would be the IDEAL match to go with this look. you could do exactly the same treatment as the skirt, just flipped upwards and it would really complete the look.

Ma plus grande erreur. découper dans le tissus parfait mais qui était très limitée. En découpant mes morceaux j'ai découpé 2x le même côté... Je n'avais plus assez de tissus pour faire l'autre côté de la robe 🙃

For the blood you should try H2O2. Easiest is to get contact lens fluid. It makes organic material bubble and get out of fabric. As a vet with white trousers it's a gamechanger :)

those little strands you cut off, keep them, turn them into a tiara with little bits of armiture wire, and crystals to go with your gown. oh my gosh, that would be stunning.

One time I sewed a cute cozy winter witch hat out of red velvet lining and what I thought was white wool, only to discover after I'd finished it, that the white fabric was actually batting... I had to seamrip and re construct it but I used a white blanket fleece and now it's the coziest white winter witch hat ever.... I'm making a dress and Victorian Mantle to match the hat now...

Love your channel and your quircky manner. It is always fun to watch or even rewatch your videos. Established Titles is a scam though - there are many creators cutting ties with them, there are videos explaining why. I know it isn't easy being a creator and finding a good sponsor must feel rewarding, though it isn't always as unproblematic as it seems. Everyone be careful, to whom you give your well earned money.

Years ago after making alterations and adding an invisible zipper to an expensive pair of very fitted wool slacks, I triumphantly snipped off the thread by the zipper…and promptly snipped a hole in the fabric. I couldn’t fix it unless I could find someone that still did reweaving. Which thankfully my uncle who was a trained tailor was able to do. But wow how embarrassing.

I always make mistakes with sleeves. I either sew them inside out or upside down. One memorable occasion I did them wrong the exact same way three times in a row and abandoned the project for weeks out of frustration!

I don't sew clothes but I do make plushies. And I started making a dolphin cus it was cute ya know. Then I put the wrong sides together 😭 So I made a shark 🙃

I am a very chaotic crafter and often start making things without the necessary skills or presence of mind to plan ahead properly. So all of my projects seem to have terrible mistakes and I always seem to have to take a snack break to figure out how to fix it. Right now, I’m determined to finish a quilt as a Christmas gift….I’ve never sewn a quilt before and thought I could cut matching pieces without measuring. I regret my decisions but I am determined to make it work!! It’s actually starting to look useable after some blood sweat and lots of tears 😭 you are so amazingly talented and I watch your videos as I struggle along. Thank you for sharing your mistakes it’s good to know that we all do it 🖤

Long time sewer here and I've just watched Abby Cox regret video....I'm sensing a theme 🤤 Sewing is so up and down like the needle in a machine! Your own saliva will remove your own blood. Just take a clean cloth spit on it and dab at the blood spot over and over, repeat. Dish soap works too I'm told but if it's something that can't be washed it might leave a water stain. Ps I'm still trying to decide which is my worse mistake 🙃...that I want to share hahaha 😅 Loved your outfit and could so picture it in a ghost movie as a femme from the past! The scientists that invented that stuff should be so happy to see what you have discovered about their fabric! Much love ❤ 🇨🇦

It came out great despite the errors that can be so frustrating in the process! I especially like the second layer of lights on the top part (from folding the fabric), makes a nice gradient. I always use hydrogen peroxide when I need to remove blood stains. I can disinfect my finger and treat the fabric in one go😂 haven’t had any problems with colored textiles, but of course it’s better to try it on less visible area before application

I always sew one sleave right and one sleave backwards/inside out.

Beautiful gown! I love it! I made a striped dress a few years ago and THREE TIMES I cut one of the sleeves with the stripes going the wrong direction, even after I had to go buy additional fabric twice. Also, you can always get your blood out of fabric with your own saliva. I have done it myself multiple times.

Hey Ariel, I was told at sewing school there is something in your own saliva that breaks down your own blood, as long as it's still relatively wet. Hopefully this is helpful next time maybe. I love your work!

My biggest mistake was to alter a historical sleeve pattern, try the mock-up on but did not attach the sleeve to an armhole, then do the real one and try to get it fit to my bodice... about 7 times. In the end I'm still unhappy. I should have checked my mock-up better. But now I don't have enough fabric to recut so I need to deal with the puckering of the pouf at the top ...

I actually bought some of this fabric to try with my Cosplays because of you. I also thought of using it for a Jellyfish.

I think a top in the holographic fabric would look amazing with this skirt and short cape. And those are very awesome by the way!

I have sewn my hair into a quilt before. I just cut the chunk of hair off rather than unpick the seam while attached to the project. It's still in the quilt, I figure it's just extra batting. Always put your hair in a bun before sewing! Always!

Recently had to redraft a sleeve cap, making the already-cut sleeves too short - pieced together two cuffs out of scraps so now the dress has ✨decorative cuffs✨. Half the 'design elements' on my clothes are fixed mistakes 🙃 Btw, same dress has - ahem - decorative shoulder reinforcements. It was not an easy project. Also yay your channel is doing so well, good on you 👏👏👏

I've done very little costume making but I did once spend hours sewing what started out as a reversible cloak only to realised that I had put the inside layer seam out so it became a one side cloak. I would turn the off cut fibre optic into a feather fan with white feathers with the fibre optic spread through it

I was making a jean jacket. I didn't mark the seams. I didn't baste anything; I just went straight to sewing with tiny stitches and expensive thread. I sewed one sleeve into the wrong armscye and the other sleeve into the neck opening.

You could make some sort of head dress from the extra fibre optic ends!! They would make a very shiny crown 👑

There is electricity conducting thread you can get for these types of projects to sew in LED lights, it even works in a machine :) Did some purses a few years back that when you open them they have a light inside, that you can change to any color or effect.

I really love the frayed edge on the cape! I think it would also look really good on the hem of the skirt 😉

I learned in sewing panel at a convention that you can lick your own blood off of fabric or use your saliva and cotton swab to clean it. Hydrogen peroxide also worked nicely. Something about your saliva against your blood will make the blood come out of it. I assume it has something to do with it breaking the blood down or something. Sounds weird but it works, I promise. I used Hydrogen peroxide to get the blood off of a project after I got a big scratch from my cat who didn't apperiacate being shooed away from the cozy fuax fur I was using to make a big white Easter Bunny dress. You can also buy fibooroptic whips for dancing at raves and stuff as well if you really want one. Though yours looked good.

m'lady. You need a LIGHT CROWN. Take those short light ends and make an awesome bit of head drama! I made a pirate coat out of directional brocade with gold dragons. I cut one of the long back pieces out with all the dragons facing down instead of up. I had to buy more fabric and re-cut it. Still love the coat though!

the worst sewing mistake I ever made was using a stretch fabric when making a corset and deciding that interlining it with cotton canvas and a nonstretch lining would probably be fine. It puckered a lot and definitely needed some iron on interfacing

Maybe with the metallic fabric you have, you can make a space/astronaut inspired dress? Similar to those space pin up girls but make it a ballgown.

You should make a bodice out of that super-holo fabric to go with the skirt and cape. It'd be very pretty. Also, my biggest sewing fail was a wrong size. Luckily it was too big and I could fix my error.

I also bled on my current project whilst hand sewing. It’s dead center on the bodice, it was very much I thought I had stopped bleeding and there are still some flecks. Anyway your ball gown skirt is gorgeous. I’m not thinking of any sewing mistakes that have made me want to logout though I have been brought to the verge of tears over cutting 3 right sides of a wiiiide waistband that was double sided. Thank God I had enough to recut it as it was the last meter of fabric at that store when I purchased it. My constant problem sewing is cute designs that I somehow never figure out how I want the closures to be until the end. Or changing the design halfway through because the way I pinned it ‘to see’ was how I want it now. 🙃

I typically wear dark wash jeans with black boots and a black top, BUT when I dream at night or day dream, yes it is of princess-type sparkling ball gowns. Regarding my sewing epic fails... One thing I have learned over the years is SAVE THE FABRIC. I cut down a thrifted dress which was way too long, cut off too much, WAY too much fabric. Fortunately the garment had lace around the hem, so I carefully removed the lace sewed it onto the hem of the now tunic? mini dress? blouse? which resulted in a wearable garment.

One mistake I have made was in a fancy dress with a gored skirt for my four year old granddaughter. Somehow the number of gores confused me and I kept adding more then taking them off, removing the skirt from the bodice each time. She wore it once, for Christmas. Sometimes you just have to walk away and come back later.

my "best" sewing mistake is probably when I was patching up my winter coat that had some tears in it... and managed to sew the pockets halfway shut in the process. I did not notice this when I stuck my hands into the pockets, but I sure did when my hands got stuck trying to get them *out* again

My 'biggest' mistake was while making my Shinding Dress (seen in thumbnail) - I gathered all the many, many layers of ruffles, stitched on the first row, pinned on the second, hated how it looked and then discovered that the ruffles in the show are pleated, not gathered. Which was fine, except I had done my purchasing math based off pleated ruffles...thankfully the store still had the same fabric so i was able to buy enough yardage to finish the skirt. My 'stupidest' mistake was my first time making a waistcoat, and when I was assembling the lining, I didn't realize that somehow I had twisted the shoulder seam around, and didn't catch it until I was pinning in the lining. Had to seam rip and resew the most finnicky part of the whole thing.

Great video as always. I would have loved to see a light up bodice to go with the skirt. Maybe with the remainder of the fabric you can make a separate bodice.

In terms of cosplay reusability, isn't there a big white dress in Sailor Moon? Also a version of Goddess Madoka could be really cool in this!

We nurses use water peroxide (peroxyde d'hydrogène) to clean blood out of clothes, the fresher the blood the better the result... 🤞

Comparatively small scale, but for someone dealing with chronic exhaustion (long covid) it's almost had me wanting to bang my head on a wall. I'm making a simple shift because I want more/better undergarments to protect my outer clothes. To help make it last I've been trying to do French seams, but somehow I keep attaching the sleeves wrong so the seams on the sleeve don't match the rest of the garment, despite checking that I had things the right way before sewing (or so I thought). Three times I've had to seam rip a sleeve out (twice for one, once for the other before I finally got it), its been enough to make me feel like I'm going a bit mad. Worse, this isn't my first rodeo with French seams, they're a favourite of mine, and I swear I never had this much trouble before.
