What had happened in the 5th minute? A miracle? A bunch of old wrenches, which looked like a chicken bone suddenly became a thick piece of steel!!! Hey man, you are a magician!

Exactly!!! It's kinda like those videos of 2 native guys digging this elaborate underground house with a pool using a couple of sticks...... There's usually a big jump in progress, but the excavator tracks are covered up in that case so nobody asks any questions.

"I tried to make a hunting knife out of rusty wrenches I didn't even bother to clean because I have no idea what I'm doing and screwed it up, so I decided that instead of owning my mistake I'd just lie for views" fixed the title for you.

Yeah he should've cleaned them then put them in a steel box full of flux and iron oxide and welded that box shut, and maybe pressed it instead of hammering, i think he would've succeeded then 🤔 Edit: and maybe surface grinded the wrenches to make them flat?

Did anyone in this thread stop to think that maybe it wasn’t about the functionality of the creation but simply what he made of it?? People would still pay hundreds for it just because someone took the time to make it with their own hands. Try appreciating the work of others instead offering criticism.

What happened to the wrenches? I'd have thought that to forge weld items with so much space you'd need a canister and filler like a powdered steel, otherwise you'd never be able to get rid of the occlusions.

It can be done without a canister or powdered steel filler. It wouldn't be much different than forging motorcycle chains. Otherwise, you are correct he has a lot more material in the finished billet than what he started with.

Love that excess glue and rough finish on the front of the handle scales. There's a reason you usually finish the front of the scales before glue up since it's hard to finish them afterwards and you clean up the excess glue that leaks out before it dries.

Love how he magically got a damascus pattern from only one type of steel. All those wrenches were the same material so where did the other metal come from to make the patterns he had? The welds he left in? Because those booger welds would have made even more inclusions than the gaps and dirty steel already had.

Hmmm... I think your original billet long since burnt up in the fire. The mass of the wrenches is only a fraction of the bar. If you would have cut the ends of the wrenches off and then forge welded those you might have had a small bar that you might have used for the centre bar of a San Mai.

Mig/Tig/Stick welding (these three are the same) vs Oxy Acetylene vs Forge welding all produce different spectrums of UV light and the eye protection is NOT interchangeable, and in fact using dark glasses that are not the correct type will just do more damage than none of at all.
