Is a game with no players possible? Well... I made one (sorta)

Checkout Game Maker's Toolkit (if you somehow haven't yet): / @gmtk
The GMTK Game Jam gives you 48 hours to develop a game from scratch. The theme was "out of control". The idea I settled on was a puzzle game involving cellular automata, inspired by Conway's Game of Life. Players will set some initial conditions of various cells on a grid, and then the simulation will play out.
I pulled out the good ol' Unity game engine to build this game. After some serious struggle, I eventually developed a possible game idea and figured out how to program it (didn't actually end up using cellular automata, but it kind of mimics it).
There are different types of cells with specific functions. A mover cell moves in one direction and pushes any cells in its way. A rotate cell will spin cells that touch it. A generator cell with duplicate another cell.
game development. The idea is that combining these will lead to emergent gameplay (with the goal being to destroy enemy cells).
During this game development marathon, I added animations, made some levels, attempted pixel art, made some more levels, programmed dragging and controls, and added even more levels. I finished the game about 4 hours before the deadline, which gave me plenty of time to make builds and submit. After that I actually fixed a bug and added level saving, and updated everything an hour before the deadline.
So I think I started to scratch the surface of emergent gameplay, something I've always wanted to do. The game is called Cell Machine, it's available on web/PC for now, but I might port it to mobile, but only if I can come up with a good title for that video lol.

I love watching these videos. I have yet to learn any real coding programs, but i started on scratch alll the way back in 2018, with simple coding that honestly sucked, it used bare bones basic coding because i didn’t understand if then statements or anything. Then i found a really complicated warrior cats game, and decided to remix it. It was then i realized, i could learn scratch coding by just observing the coding in the already made game. I hope to learn real game softwares soon, these videos and scratch really inspired me to learn coding!

That would be a lot of effort, however the game seems completely unobfuscated and there are plenty of helper methods, i'm currently working on a mod to implement something similar to this, though there would be no "download center" or anything, you would need to share the levels elsewhere Edit: I've mostly finished this mod i said i was working on now, and i've asked sam in twitter DMs for permission to share the mod (since the mod modifies the same files as "SmartFridgeGamer"s playground, which is just the code, but 99% of that code is sam's)

I played, and I can say, you did a good job The only thing I wish the game had was a sandbox mode. The game already has a nice concept, and it's actually a lot more fun than it looks. But a sandbox mode seems like it's relatively easy to add, and it gives almost infinite replay-ability. This is just a suggestion though, don't take me as one of those guys begging for an update, I just think it would be great to have.
@StoMoComedoPro
@StoMoComedoPro Жыл бұрын
A few things I would add would be moving enemies, game over blocks (like, blocks that you must beat the level without letting any cell touch), one way pass through cells, run away cells, wrap around cells (like come back to the other side), shooting cells (that destory a cell in a certain direction every cell move), bounce cells (bounces a cell a certain amount of spaces, making it bounce over the cells), portal cells, non-fight-back enemy cells (like enemies a cell can defeat it without being defeated, or like they could be coins), goal cells (a cell that you must get at least one cell to after beating all the enemies), 4x4 cells (bigger versions of the cells), checkpoint cells (let's you rearrange your cells again, like a part 2 of a long level), custom control cells (you can make it move a certain number of spaces and turns, then it loops, still follows rotating cells though), destruction cells (cells of yours that will destory every other cell withotu being destroyed), enemy destruction cells, and etcetera. Although I must say, this game was pretty awesome and clever, pretty clever how you first had the idea of the living and dead cells but then made this whole game. I saw this reccomnded a bit ago and then watched this video, and you were able to come up with this idea and then make this game in tht time, you are pretty amazing. 👍🏻

The term "octahedron" is derived from the Greek words "octa," meaning eight, and "hedron," meaning face. It accurately describes the shape's defining feature - eight faces. Octahedrons are one of the five Platonic solids, a special group of polyhedra with identical faces, edges, and angles. The other Platonic solids include the tetrahedron, cube, icosahedron, and dodecahedron. To construct an octahedron, you can start with two square pyramids joined at their bases. The resulting shape will have eight triangular faces meeting at a common point, called the vertex. The octahedron's six vertices are equally spaced from its center, forming the corners of an imaginary cube that is contained within the octahedron. All of the octahedron's twelve edges are of equal length, creating a highly symmetrical structure. Octahedrons are dual polyhedra to cubes, meaning that if you connect the centers of each face of an octahedron, you will get a cube, and vice versa. Archimedes was one of the first known mathematicians to study octahedrons extensively. He discovered that the octahedron has two types of faces: triangular and kite-shaped. In geometry, octahedrons are classified as Johnson solids. These are convex polyhedra with faces that are regular polygons. The volume of an octahedron can be calculated using the formula V = (a^3√2) / 3, where "a" represents the length of one edge. The surface area of an octahedron can be calculated using the formula A = 2√3 * a^2, where "a" is the length of an edge. Octahedrons have a unique property - they can be divided into two square pyramids that share a common base. This characteristic is often utilized in mathematical and scientific applications. One of the simplest ways to visualize an octahedron is as two four-sided pyramids placed base to base, with their apexes pointing in opposite directions. Octahedrons have a high degree of rotational symmetry. They can be rotated by 180 degrees around any axis passing through the center, and the resulting shape will remain unchanged. Octahedrons are often used in three-dimensional modeling and computer graphics because of their geometric simplicity and aesthetic appeal. Ancient civilizations, such as the Egyptians, Greeks, and Romans, were aware of the octahedron's existence and studied its properties in geometry. In the field of crystallography, octahedral coordination geometry is essential. It describes how atoms or ions arrange themselves around a central atom or ion in a way that resembles the structure of an octahedron. Octahedral crystal formations are commonly found in minerals like fluorite, which exhibits perfect octahedral cleavage when broken along certain planes. The octahedron's symmetrical nature makes it a suitable shape for gem cutting. Gemstones like diamonds and spinels are often cut into octahedral shapes to maximize their brilliance. In chemistry, octahedral molecular geometry is a prevalent arrangement for molecules with six bonding pairs of electrons around a central atom. This geometry is associated with coordination compounds and transition metals. Octahedrons have a strong presence in nature. They can be observed in the formation of certain types of snowflakes and in the natural growth of crystals like pyrite. The octahedron is closely related to the concept of isometric or cubic crystal systems, where the crystal lattice is based on cubes and octahedrons. In the world of architecture and design, octahedrons have inspired numerous structures and sculptures due to their geometric elegance. Buckminster Fuller, a renowned architect and inventor, was fascinated by the octahedron's structural properties. He used this shape as the basis for the geodesic dome, a highly efficient and stable structure. Geodesic domes, built using octahedral and tetrahedral shapes, are known for their strength and ability to cover large spaces with minimal materials. The famous Epcot Center's Spaceship Earth, located in Disney World, is a geodesic sphere with an octahedral framework that houses various attractions. The concept of octahedral symmetry is essential in crystallography, where it helps determine how atoms are arranged in crystals and how they diffract X-rays. In the study of minerals, the term "octahedral crystal habit" refers to a crystal's natural growth shape, which resembles an octahedron. Octahedrons are often used as building blocks for complex three-dimensional shapes and sculptures in the field of origami, the Japanese art of paper folding. Leonardo da Vinci, the Italian polymath of the Renaissance era, explored the octahedron's properties in his studies of polyhedra and geometric shapes. Octahedral symmetry is also essential in the study of molecular chemistry, as it influences the bonding angles and arrangement of atoms in certain molecules. In the realm of art and design, octahedrons are a popular motif for jewelry, fashion accessories, and decorative objects due to their aesthetic appeal. The octahedron is often used as a symbol of balance and equilibrium in various cultures and spiritual traditions. In some belief systems, the octahedron represents the element of air or the heart chakra, symbolizing qualities like love, compassion, and openness. In astrology, the octahedron is associated with the air signs Gemini, Libra, and Aquarius, which are said to be communicative and intellectually oriented. Octahedrons have been incorporated into sacred geometry, where they are believed to hold spiritual significance and represent the harmony of the universe. The concept of octahedral symmetry plays a role in the study of molecular orbital theory, helping to explain the arrangement of electrons in molecular orbitals. The study of octahedral complexes is crucial in coordination chemistry, where metal ions are bonded to ligands in a way that resembles the coordination of atoms in an octahedron. In the field of optics, octahedrons can serve as optical prisms, splitting white light into its constituent colors through refraction. The octahedron's symmetry and uniformity make it a popular choice for constructing dice used in board games and role-playing games. Octahedrons are encountered in various mathematical puzzles and brain teasers, where their unique properties challenge individuals to think critically and solve problems.
