And she packs a ton of information into a short amount of time that's extremely user-friendly and great for first puppy owners. It’s great grabbing those moments when they do something good out of the blue. It happened to me today. I have 2 dogs and I taught the old dog “back” many many years ago. I haven’t taught that to Marzieh yet but today I said “Back” to Jasper and Marzieh edged backwards (very slightly) so of course I grabbed the treats and we had a training session. (I rewarded Jasper for “touch” my hand to avoid confusion)

I (among many other people) contend that small dogs are more difficult to house train than larger dogs. Some have said this is because they have a smaller bladder. Perhaps that is why, although if you take them out frequently enough, the size of the bladder shouldn't be an issue (since you shoot for taking them out before they "need" to eliminate in the house). So not at all sure why that is. Until the last year, I had very large dogs (Great Danes and Irish Wolfhounds or mixes thereof) and I house trained both puppies and adult rescues. They were a breeze. Then we got two small dogs (11 1/2 lbs and 8 1/2 lbs). Let's just say there were NOT a breeze!! I thought they'd never be trained. Eventually, the became house trained, but it took much longer than it had taken me to train the larger dogs.

I had this hit home the other day. We use chopped up baby carrots as training treats for one of our little dogs. He scarfs them at home and does everything I ask and is perfectly happy with his carrot treats. Well, I made the stupid mistake of taking him out to a pet supply store with carrots for treats. Did that backfire?? Big time! All the dogs, the other people, the sights, the smells were just so much more rewarding than little pieces of carrots. I finally bought some freeze-dried liver and the difference in behavior was amazing!! Make sure you have high enough value treats when dealing with heavy distractions...

my puppy (now almost 5 months) does not like the crate nor playpen. He does not care about any reward if it means staying in there - I've tried STEAK, hotdogs, cheese ... he's like nope, take your stupid delicious steak and get me out of here. We've had it sitting, door open, for two months now and he will NOT set foot in there (ok, he might run in and grab the steak and run right out, but he never will settle in there for more than it takes to make a mad dash. We are able to leave him in the playpen a bit for safety, but it's not secure enough to be left home alone for longer than a few minutes. This means we are stranded! Need a dog sitter if we want to leave the house (or need to leave him crying his heart out, which makes the whole crate thing even worse later - we work from home so it hasn't happened often, but it would be nice to not be stranded at home because of this dog that won't stay alone and won't stay in crate without acting like someone is killing him). How do you train this when no food or toy will motivate him? Those same toys or foods have worked wonders for all other training, just not the crate (or being left in any space close-in alone, for that matter)
@NyreeAlana
@NyreeAlana 2 жыл бұрын
It sounds like your dog has developed a negative association with the crate, so it's a longer process to get them to like it. Personally, I would go back to the beginning. Change the location of the crate and put different bedding in there, and one of your t-shirts with your scent could also be helpful. Sometimes putting a blanket over the top of the crate can make it more cozy. In addition to Zak's methods you could try feeding him through the side of the crate - I did this with a dog I was helping who had the same problem. I sat at the far corner of the crate (on the outside) and stuck my fingers through with a tasty treat. This is after I had dropped a couple in and the dog had run in and out to retrieve them. I had to sit for a minute or two while the dog worked out that she needed to go inside and take the treat from me. Once she went in and took the treat, I fed her a succession of treats. Then a break and then we'd do it again and it became a game to her. If your dog doesn't work it out or is too nervous to go to the far corner of the crate, you can start by holding the treats through the holes close to the door and then bit by bit move further away from the door. After a while I was poking the treats through from the bottom holes, which encouraged her to lie down to eat them and I slowed down the treats so she was having to wait for them. I was quite surprised, in this particular case, in a few hours she was relaxed lying in the crate and eventually had a wee snooze. I was able to close the door, move away from the crate and sit in a comfortable chair. When she woke up and stood up, I opened the crate door so she didn't feel trapped. This was one session and with another dog it might not have progressed so quickly, they're all different. Another thing you can do is hold a chew through a hole of the crate, while they chew it, so they don't just grab it and run out. This all takes a lot of time and effort, but it's worth it. You can also set up a mattress for you beside the crate, while you get them used to sleeping in there. I wish I had a happy successful ending to tell about the dog I was helping, but despite the human seeing the progress I made within a short time, she was not willing to put in the time, even with my help and decided to rehome the dog. Full disclosure: I'm not a professional trainer, just have a few years experience with rescue dogs, but hopefully I've been of help 😊

Mine is 4 months and the same. Will not go in the crate except from feet only to grab a treat. She's a border collie. Never had a negative association with crate. She's also afraid of her new leash!!!
@NyreeAlana
@NyreeAlana 2 жыл бұрын
@@ShannonsChannel if you see any nervousness around the crate she probably does have a negative association, you might not have observed anything that would have triggered it though. If it is fear, rather than a bit of nervousness, you're best to involve a Vet Behaviourist. A qualified reward based trainer will be able to see what you're dealing with.

I doubt Zak will even see this comment. What I do with the crate is when they cry in the crate I immediatly take them outside with no affection and as little interaction as possible. This is the start of how to teach your dog to let you know when they want out. It dont matter if you let them out 5 minutes ago. If they cry they go outside. Then when they do their business outside I give them tons of affection and treats if I remember to grab them. I personally love that I have a 2 way communication with my current dog Ruby.

I would love some tips on issues related to house training with older rescues. Our little Daisy, a three year old Jack-Chi, is not having accidents in the house. But she’s so timid, she doesnt ask to go out unless she gets desperate. It would help up a lot if she would speak up more. Will this clear up naturally as she gains confidence in general?

My rescue dog (dachshund mix) pees a little when she greets men she likes. Sometimes even after peeing outside before greeting them (just a few drops). We think she was abused before we got her because it takes a long time for her to stop barking at men and even longer to like them. Not sure how to combat this. We think she's trying to be extremely submissive to men she likes cause she doesn't do this to women. Extra note: She's predicted to be 3-4 yrs old, spayed, fully potty trained and goes out often.
@janhankins911
@janhankins911 2 жыл бұрын
It sure sounds like she's being submissive to men. This isn't an uncommon problem with rescue dogs. When you have men visit your home, try letting the man come in, sit down, and get settled before letting your dog greet them. Likewise, if the man can squat down, that may help. Someone bending over (looming over) a dog will result in some submissive urination--that can be pretty scary to the dog. If the man is "shorter" (sitting or squatting down) before petting her, that may help. It will also help if you have men greet her by petting her under her chin or behind her ears (rather than on top of her head). Many dogs don't really like to be petted on top of their head. Let me tell you a little story about me. I'm a small person (I stand 4 feet 9 inches tall and weigh under 90 pounds--and I'm full grown adult). One way to get my ire up? Pat me on top of the head. That makes me so angry when people do that!!! I don't like it--and neither do most dogs.

For my puppy it’s the constant non stop teething. I put him outside he lies down relaxing I chill with him outside he relaxed I take him inside he goes into a frenzy on my furniture. I give him his toys outside and he doesn’t feel like playing or chewing . Potty breaks have gotten harder bc he just looks for things to put in his mouth instead of using the bathroom.

I have a question regarding your crate training. You were requiring little Biscuits to go into the crate, sit, and hold the sit. That seems like you're requiring three things of her: go into the crate, sit, stay. I'd be content just getting them to go into the crate. Requiring a sit and stay seems to me like you're making it more difficult? I understand your reasoning (I think), but it still seems to make it more difficult. I'm happy if they go into the crate at all during the first bit of training--much less sit and stay. What is the advantage of making the dog sit and stay during the first part of training? 00

I would say that he did it because he realized she was capable of it within that session, you can tell she's pretty smart! I often see Zak push things a little, because he has a sense that the dog will be able to succeed and of course, sometimes he'll be wrong and have to rewind a bit. For the most part I think you're right, keep things simple in initial session and work up to more complicated things, especially because most of us aren't professional trainers and might not be able to gage the puppy's ability to succeed.

Uhh because while your dog is still crying and freaking out at being locked in their crate his will be happy and sitting calmly early. Not that hard to figure out. Sit and stay are essential commands for a puppy, especially stay. Dogs aren’t “dumb”, you don’t need to teach them everything in baby steps.

@@lindseym.9191 hey let's not be rude to people who have genuine questions. I'm not a professional dog trainer (meaning that I don't have official qualifications), but from my experience training many different dogs, I have seem that dogs, like people, are all different and what the way they learn best differs from one to the next. I don't think that you are ever wrong doing things in baby steps, especially when you're dealing with things that there can be significant nervousness around. And this is the message that I have received from professional dog trainers too.

Can anyone speak to whether or not multiple crates work for a pup? I have been trying to crate train my puppy he is an American Bulldog Mix (12 weeks). We had to naturally get a larger crate. His crate is in our bedroom upstairs and it is not easy to move between floors (very steep steps, and my wife has a few mobility issues) He tends to be good in the crate over night but during the day we had issues with a pen we had on the main floor he would charge the walls, when it was closed or jump at the roof of the crate. We gave up on the pen, but we'd really like to get him crate trained so we could leave him for short periods of time. He very easily distracted and seems to have a bit of FOMO. Not so much separation anxiety but he likes to be where people are. Would a second crate work for him? Or is it best to just deal with moving the crate up and downstairs daily. We both work out of the home, I work in the basement and my wife off the main floor so we figured it'd be best to crate train in the main floor since it is easier to get him outside. Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated.

My puppy is 6 months old and I am really struggling. I got her potty trained by the time she was 2 months old. No accidents inside ever! I even got her kennel trained that if I tell her “go to the kennel” she will go to it. However, my puppy still does not come to her name when in trouble. I can call her name and she will come. But in trouble she ignores me or when doing something she ignores me. She also constantly bites things and chews up furniture. To top it off, I can’t get to listen in general. She darts out the door every chance she gets and I’m just at a stand still. Literally all I got her to do is outside and kennel and she’s 6 months. I just don’t know what to do now to get her to listen and learn. Any tips for this?

I hate to say it zak but there has be a certain level of corrections and boundaries otherwise they will dictate to what they can and cannot do especially Chihuahua husky and shepherd breeds. The last thing i ever want to do is for my dog to feel fearful, but they have to know your the pack leader with confidence otherwise they do cross boundaries. I do love the way your very patient and give biscuits the emotional attention she needs it is very important also.

My 4 months old Siberian husky is afraid of new people me meets. He doesn't snap at people but he tries to run away by pulling his leash. He doesn't even accept treats. He suddenly developed this behaviour. He was fine for 2-3 weeks when we used to go on walks .His mother also suffers from this stranger danger. Any ideas to fix it.
