Not saying this is Mikel’s plan, but I played for a lower division team for 3 years that genuinely used two #1 keepers. (I’m a CB). Option one was a better shot stopper and a bit more hyperactive, and the second option was super calm and better on the ball. Our coach typically used the first option for away games (he had the “warrior mentality”, and we usually faced more shots on goal away); and the second option was often used for home games (we had more of the ball and teams sat off us more often, so he opened up different options with his passing ability). Maybe it’s weird to think of doing this at the highest level, but I’m interested to see what happens!

Can you talk about the drummers in the Emirates Stadium. I think they are underrated. Last season I was watching Arsenal play and could not go unnoticed about the steady beats in the background. Somehow I felt like the beats helped the tempo of the game, the passing, the crosses, overall the players as if they are marching with the ball to the opponents' half like in those movies and ship battle in game of thrones. Agree. The game is evolving. I've never quite understood the argument that GK is the only position on the field where you can't successfully rotate. We're talking about professional footballers. Not just the keepers, but the whole team should have enough adaptability to easily make it work, particularly once the get to know Raya's style as opposed to Aaron's. I also think right now is not the time to drop Aaron. Let David establish himself in cup games. Aaron has not really done anything to merit being dropped. David will have his chance to show what he can do soon enough. No need to rock the boat!

The only counter to this is that Arteta has virtually never rotated teams unless he's had to. He's always been a manager who would rather have a set XI rather than a Pep type who never sticks with the same players week to week

It is only a matter of time before Ramsdale becomes a number 2 goalkeeper. With Havertz in the team having Ramsdale undermines what Arteta is trying to do....He'll get much more out of Havertz with Raya between the sticks, because Raya's distrubtion is quite good. He can break the lines with a smooth pass along the ground and find Havertz or ping it long into him for him to header down and link up a teammate.

Raya is most likely a cup/UCL goalie as he's better with pressure/penalties with more experience and will play more premier league games towards the end when the picture is clear. it's too disruptive to chop/change a goalie this early.

One of the aspects which isn’t measurable is the impact on team spirit. Ramsdale was one of the main catalysts for our improved atmosphere and positivity when he first came in.

It makes sense when you think about it deeply. Arteta and Pep play very similar football, you can argue Arteta copied it...but who knows what tactics he helped Pep with during his assistant role at city, which he them applied at Arsenal. Anyways, we all know Arsenal need to be more unpredictable. This can be done with our many versatile players, so we can set up in many different ways. It also means (like stated in this upload) that we can completely change our approach to games with our whole 11, making it even harder for opposition to predict our set up/style of play for that match, starting with the GK. Teams like united for instance will use Onana for pretty much every game. By doing this, you will know his strengths and weaknessess going in to the game and prepare better, thus helping to plan for how united will play. But preparing for a game where you dont even know who will be in goal can also affect your game plan quite a bit. Do you plan for posession based or counter attack ect. I think its a big risk to effectively have two number 1 goalies, but in order to try and finish above city and i reckon liverpool this season, risks are going to have to be taken!

What is it with goalkeepers and being overly protected??? If Zinchenko, Martinelli or Saka have a continuous run of stinking performances they’d be benched until they could prove themselves again. Why is it that when it’s a GK everybody freaks out? It’s not that deep, when a GK is playing badly, the other one should start. Why is that such a big deal???

The intangible thing with Ramsdale’s distribution that stats can’t tell you, is the weight of expectation vs confidence/cockyness. When he came into the team he was a gobby upstart northerner with all the exuberance of youth and nothing to lose. Now he’s had the experience of costing us a few goals, and arguably points, at the highest level, with reckless/wayward passes and he’s tightened up a bit.

Arteta demands everyone on the pitch to deliver to his plan - part of it is the creation of space and making use of extra spare players via movements. Ramsdale tends to panic and just punts it long aimlessly whenever under any sort of pressure these days, which means loss of possession (A very easy comparison is Onana of ManU - that GK is surely press-resistant and can distribute under stress [Before anyone starts on shot-stopping, this is not the point - all PL GKs must have been elite in shot-shooting as the bare minimum basic, or they shouldn’t be in any PL teams anyway]). Raya, just from his days at Brentford combining with Toney, is always better in distribution - as long as one did watch some Brentford matches. Arteta greatly values the extra few % from every position, so it’s an easy choice to pick Raya over Ramsdale sooner or later. Hanging onto personal favouritism and being British would never get Arsenal to our next better level (if so, we should sell Jesus and use Nketiah, dump Saliba to use Holding, and bench Zinchenko to start Tierney - if that’s those fans’ logic). Just watch Raya in upcoming Cup matches and the distribution range, success rate, and anti-press composure vs Ramsdale would be so obvious that we probably don’t want Ramsdale to even start again.

Personally we do not need nor want Ramsdale to be Onana. Onana can play with his feet but has bad positioning, shot stopping etc… realistically we just need a keeper that makes the saves he’s supposed to make and is very consistent and fundamental.

I think it's brilliant idea like select keepers depending on the game not because he's number one or two . Against High pressing game we can have raya for deep defending team we could use Ramsdale . It also applies to Trossard he's really effective against deep def team because of his close dribbling skills well everything is about strategy and if it's a plan we should try it . The only plan that doesn't work for me is playing Kai .

From the last game, one area where Raya is better than Rambo is in coming to claim crosses. He was outstanding with that. I also had a sense he was more comfortable with the ball on his feet. I don't see any reason why they can't be rotated as the games demand.

Also, the level of concentration a keeper needs in a game is so high, maybe mentall tiredness can become a factor and the solution is to have 2 very good keepers to ensure sharpness all season?

I remember a time when “settled back fours” were the dream setup. But now teams will change it for a game and or within the game to maximise the potential for a game and or game state. There’s no way Wenger would have dropped a LB for Tomiyasu at home to Liverpool but now those decisions are normal. We could be seeing the same happen for GK

I had this idea the other day (I didn't look for the data) that Mikel may prefer Raya for most home games and Ramsdale for most away games. Ramsdale seems to thrive on away grounds when the other team is a bit more daring and Raya as you said can make more of the 30 touches he might have at home. Let's see!!

Personal opinion - The Rams had a terrible season after winning the Superbowl season before because QB1 got injured for nearly the entire season with no actual good backup QB. They had to make a desperate trade for good QB (NFL dont have player buy/sell, only trades) to salvage the season. It became one of the worst Superbowl title defend in NFL history. Arsenal might be learning from our brother from another sport that we might need TWO No1 just incase. We never know if Rambo might get hurt suddenly like Timber. Unlike American sports, there are consequence for not winning in this football (UCL money is a priority). Liverpool had a few scares when Allison got injured few times. Ederson never (I think) get injured but City had a decent backup prepared in Ortega, he plays in cups matches for City. Even our Women team, Queen Miedema had a terrible ACL injuries she still recovering from. Injuries is too unpredictable and having a best possible backup might be a good planning.

Personally I think he could have done better with that fulham Goal, but also with the Man Utd goal aswel. Ramsdale is a good goalkeeper but he does have weaknesses, shot stopping at his near post seems to be one of them, he does seem to concede quite a few goals where you feel he could have done better, which is subjective tbf, it does also seem true that his distribution isn't what it used to be. I hope Raya gets his chances as at the end of the day it's about what makes the team better

Raya is cup/group stage keeper mate....league = continuity players..... cup=impact players......keepers work dfferent than outfield players.....they the only players allowed to use their hands.....attackers are worth more in cup , defenders worth more in leauge....thats why CDMs are going for 90+mil

When 1v1 situation, ramsdale hardly save any. When an opponent have a shot, ramsdale not looking at the ball, seems like he scared the ball will touch his face, that’s why he turn his neck and turn his head. A good goal keeper will focus 100% on the ball and don’t try to turn his head when opponents shoot the ball when 1v1 situation

I want ramsdale to keep his place to but raya is good and if arteta can somehow make these 2 very good keepers become the number 1 then I think we could have that tactical edge above every other team I think arteta needs to make sure ego isn’t getting in the way and this could very much work, I would rather have a manager that creates a whole new level of tactics and is unpredictable then a manager that is predictable I believe arteta can make this work

Long distribution to a target man is Raya. That was literally Brentford's bread and butter with Raya > Toney. Anything distribution related Raya is better. He plays games we expect to have trouble playing out from the back, like Liverpool away probably.

I'm starting to think Arteta is not as smart as you think. He's not stupid, but the a1, a2, a3 line is bullshit. Never last season we had more than 2 plans. We also had a stable 11 and this season points to that too. My guess is that Raya will appear for the cup games and steal the league games until he gets destroyed by a forward line, the same that happened to Leno.

As someone that analyzes games all the time and still backing Havertz, i somehow cant trust the load of crap coming from this content.
