I remember my local arcade getting this in back in the day. I spent a whole roll of quarters on this just to get through one of the stages and to beat the boss. The arcade version slowly drained your health over time so that you had to put in quarters to add more health. Which I get cause they're trying to make money on the machine, but that was so much BS to drain your quarters.

I've always wondered how Midway ever expected anyone to complete this game in the arcades. It would take at least 10 hours. lol

the sheer level of nostalgia for this is unreal, i used to play it with my brother whenever we'd go to our uncle's house, and literally all of the sound effects and cut scenes are so ingrained in my mind. My favorite level was the carnival looking one, I always played as Valkyrie, and we thought the word 'meal' was the funniest fecking thing in the actual universe. I haven't played it since I was a kid because I'm always worried to go back to old games and realize they were terrible lo l

I’m in the same boat as Matt in that I rented it from Blockbuster and played the hell out of it. I played the rental so much I honestly thought for years I owned it; then maybe 3 years ago I discovered I didn’t. Immediately bought a copy for my PS2 and spent the next few weeks solid playing through it with a number of characters. This game truly has an obscenely underrated soundtrack which features a few different musical themes repeated throughout in unique ways, including the classic Gauntlet theme. The levels are varied and imaginative; I especially enjoy the later ones like the evil circus, haunted house, “Your Worst Nightmare”, and the Maze of Illusion.

If they brought back Dark Legacy I would go WILD. I'd buy copies for friends, like, damn!! This was just so much fun and I only played it when I was young and dumb and bad at video games! There was so much to unlock and find, and it'd just be awesome to actually... explore some of that properly!

While I always have a good time chilling and watching your videos, Gauntlet is my JAM and it's really nice to see you getting a chance to play it again. I grew up playing the arcade version with friends, when it was ported to consoles we laughed at how much money we'd already spent on it...and then bought it anyway. Got the original on N64 and the upgrade, Dark Legacy, on the gamecube. These days though my gamecube doesn't work, and I've never successfully found a way to emulate the games. Been a really long time since I've seen these games now let alone got a chance to play one. Thank you for bringing some fantastic memories back, and hopefully they will remaster, or bring out another arcade style gauntlet someday. Though with the way the arcades have gone, I don't think that's super likely. Regardless though, I'd definitely be into more Gauntlet. Thanks Matt, see ya next time.

Probably my favorite Gauntlet of all time. I played Dark Legacy mostly on the Dreamcast, which also worked with the Hi-res VGA output and looked incredibly sharp and clean with it. Still, there was so much to this game and a pretty insane roster of unlockable characters in the Home version. (The arcade was no slouch with the way they kind of allowed you to unlock (some equivalent to Prestige classes) once you leveled up enough in one of the default classes. Like how the regular Archer could unlock the Falconess class.) Gaining Familiars. And some of the coolest unique features of classes in the series. One of my favorite classes was the Sorceress because she was kind of touted as some Witch that was at home in the Poison Swamps. And her potion's special secondary ability, was that any Poison food, in the vicinity of its effect became Good Food. (Which is a big reason I played the class so much). Poison food? Not anymore!
@ajryan28882 жыл бұрын
Played so much of this game as a kid on the ps2, that jester class is awesome and with all the hidden weapons and characters it took forever to beat. The later levels like the dream realm, hell and the icy mountain not to mention the plague airship are all awesome.

I have this game on the GameCube and I can attest to its awesomeness and fun factor. It's even more fun to play with friends. A little bit about Death in this game: Death comes in two flavors - red and black. Red drains your life while black drains your experience (yes, this can cause you to lose a level). There are three ways to deal with Death: The first and best way is if you have the Anti-Death power-up (looks like a halo). When activated, Death will run away from you and if you touch him in this state, you will continuously drain either life from him if red or experience from him if black. The second way is using a magic potion. As long as he is in the blast radius of the potion, it will one-shot him. You can even kill him in his dormant, statue-like state. The third way is to hit him with a ton of basic attacks. I think after like a hundred hits it will kill him, but I don't remember the exact amount of hits it takes. All I know is that it takes a lot. I suppose this was programmed as punishment for not saving potions.

Remember renting this game as a kid cuz I (or almost everybody) was real into the Egyptian mythology phase and saw the Egyptian looking guy on the cover. Gauntlet could totally come back even as a one-stint stinker, with how many co-op loot shooters/hack-n-slashers there's been for the past generation you'd think someone would try to spin the formula with the game that kind of started it all.

this was my dad's favorite game to play with all of his kids, it really holds some sentimentality for me. the games after this one(seven sorrows) had a divisive level design. I never played the one that came out for pc but it reviewed kinda poorly and I didn't have money. I believe that gauntlet, once a top-down arcade/twin-stick shooter, turned into an isometric RPG when it transpired into 3d, making it a stepping stone of the dark fantasy, isometric, hack and slash, RPG genre. today in place of gauntlet I have Path of Exile and its sequel coming soon and a more true homage in Hammer watch.
