If it were actually TOLKIEN'S Ring story, I would watch. I swear, if Galadriel even thinks of kissing someone other than Celeborn; or if Gandalf shows up in a flaming, phallic rocket; or Ar-Pharazôn takes a backseat to Tar-Miriel... my eyes will burn out and my head will explode. I will however return to hear your comments on it all.

As a long time Tolkien fan and a lover of the Silmarillion, all I and many others would like to see is honest clear coverage of the show. Be it good or bad, maybe some comparison to the source material (wiki it if needed) as I know not everyone is willing to go through the book itself. Maybe explain what the show is doing in story arches and compare and contrast to what the books did, show what's the same & show what's different. The biggest thing would be objectivity vs subjectivity. If you say you like or dislike something that totally fine, but give an objective reason for it. 'Show your work' as the teachers will say, show us how you came to these conclusions that you do and the rest will follow suite. Looking forward to the content you come up with.

I'm interested in reactions/explanation streams after the episode, but no rush on when they come out as long as they are good quality 😂 it'd be good to have guests on there as can hear different points of view. I'm personally not into live watch streams as I'd prefer to watch the episode myself, and then watch content later (going off how I'm doing wihh House of the Dragon content, using the as podcasts in a way). I would say, upload whatever you do on Twitch, to KZfaq as it can be useful content for next year etc as more people come across the TV show, it'll be gone from twitch then so you've lost potential viewers there for "free work" essentially. Best of luck with your future content. My final thoughts, do what you are interested in as if you do too much it'll show. Rather have you fresh and enthusiastic!

I'm very interested in seeing your opinions on how the show fares on the two separate issues of faithfulness to written canon and faithfulness to the spirit of Tolkien; your speculation of what will happen; and brief background info on central elements of lore in the show. I'm personally not interested in any live events, and I'm not that interested in very long explanations of lore that is only tangential to the plot. I'm only going to watch your videos after I see the episodes, so I don't care about spoilers. I don't think that there's any problem at all with the affiliate links. (I've been a subscriber for a couple of years, but I don't watch everything you upload and I don't participate in streams, FYI.) Thank you for your videos!

I think you should cover it, I hope "Rings of Power" can stay on the Rails and not break to much lore. I am disappointed in the direction of the show's marketing to say the least. I want to like this they are not making it easy. The Art of Tolkien is more than pretty colors, Elves with pointy ears or even War. Death and the Mortality of Man kind, is the overall Theme to his works. For those of us that see the tragic beauty and heart wrenching love stories this poetic man left us.

Probably it make sense to do a roundtable discussion every 2/3 episodes, just to free your schedule a little bit. Personally I would prefer streams on youtube and the ones that are usually live and have interaction with your followers are always the best streams, discussions with other people are a good way to spice it up but prefer you alone hah. I think people who don't want to watch the show wouldn't care for spoiler free reviews and the people who do want to watch would watch the show anyway beforehand, so nothing to spoil there. Also cash in any way you can, for the amount of work you put in the channel i don't think anyone would mind the bias, hopefully though the opinion wont get biased in the process.

I'm European, but am okay both watching live and a VOD, and on Twitch and KZfaq, so the 'when' and 'where' of it isn't too relevant to me-so long as there's a VOD somewhere. Can't really speak for the recap streams and the spoilers, but I think the affiliate links are fine. I just want honest good faith analysis. If it's all differences from the book, well we know that and it's compressing time frames and characters and such. Even our silmarillian is a crystallization of what Chris found to be his most concrete ideas. But Tolkien edited and refotmulAted, anf his Silmarillion may have had significant differences. What's key for me is are the themes Tolkien-ian? Such choosing to do the hard thing because it is needed, evil sowing it's own undoing, rebellion/evil being turned to the good eventually as part of Iluvitars plan, fellowship driving strength often from the least of us, etc.

In my opinion you can skip the no spoiler section because if people are going to watch the video they will most likely look for more information/review/rating on the episodes. I think the most suitable way of doing it is to release detailed videos on the episodes and in addition you can have the watch parties, too.

If you can do watch parties on youtube that would be wonderful for people that cannot afford amazon prime. Please consider that as I know a lot of people in that boat. Please upload your videos to youtube as well for the same reason and also because it's very convenient as opposed to remembering yet another password and learning one's way around yet another website. As for using amazon links, do it as anything getting more people to read is always a very good thing in life. If you make a little money on the side that's an added benefit and life always throws emergencies at us and that added bit will come in handy. I think you can do a watch party anytime you like as long as you let us know when it will be with plenty of notice, say 24 hours at least. That way we can set an alarm or plan accordingly by adding to our schedules no matter where we may be around the world. I wouldn't worry too much about spoiler-free stuff as anyone watching will surely have watched the show I hope. Maybe just put that there's spoilers in the video title. I like all the other ideas you have and more content is always better when it comes to you. Your guests are always great but you alone is always a treat too. If you can have them that's great, even if that changes over time whether you add guests or some can't make it. It might be a nice surprise to keep it loose and changing and it will help your guests too if they can't make for some reason. Thanks Chris!

@bgallagher9718 Жыл бұрын
Hi Chris 1-5 - can't help much here. I'd probably watch anything you post, but watch parties aren't really my thing (I like discussion after, not during) and recaps wouldn't really be needed because I'll have watched... 6 - roundtable or any other analysis will probably be signifcantly easier for you as livestream. No need for scripting or massive levels of production. You'll be able to get it out faster, which would probably be good for your channel. I really like both your planned videos and livestreams. Can't speak for anyone else, but I suspect many will feel it's the *person* that provides the quality, not the *format*. So might as well do what's likely to be easier as well as faster. 7-8 - I imagine it will be very hard to produce anything worthwhile (and your value - for me - is precisely in the quality of your analysis) without spoilers. Give a warning at the outset and I think you're good. Unless you post VERY quickly after an episode, I expect most viewers will either have already watched the episode (so spoilers don't matter) or will have chosen to avoid the show itself and are engaging with it only through *your* coverage / other KZfaqrs (in which case spoilers are the whole point...). I'll be in the first group. 9 - if you are looking to expand the channel, new viewers may be less likely to convert into long term viewers if they perceive a financial link between you and Amazon. Making it clear that there is no such link / compromised opinions will be cumbersome and have to be repeated each time. Even then, some may not believe you. Your established audience probably won't care one way or the other - your record establishes your independent bona fides for us. I doubt I'll be buying anything, but if I did, I'd happily do it in a way that helped you. So, personally, I'd say 'go for it' subject to that warning of how new viewers may perceive it unless there are extended (and dare I say it, boring...) disclaimers each time you mention the possibility. Finally, and not directly in answer to your specific questions, I'm going to be most interested in what you think about the show. Your style of analysis appeals to me and if good analysis means it doesn't come out quite as fast, I'd rather have good than fast. The opposite is likely to be best for the algorithm and getting new viewers. So either you try to compromise between the two or (if the workload is managable) try for both by quickly getting out some brief content while interest is high with more in-depth and longer stuff later. I'm already sold, though! I'll watch pretty much anything you make regardless, so my input is probably less valuable than something from anyone who's on the fence at the moment. Keep up the great work!

Hi Chris, I'll keep it brief (for once) 1. I'm much more interested in recap streams than watch parties, but I need time to process as well. Also, taking into account everyone's schedules and time differences I believe it best to do it *at least* 24 hours after the episode debuts, even a bit longer if need be. We'll have a whole week to fill in after all. 2. Guests are great but it can also derail things a bit. I think the overwhelming majority of your viewers want to hear your expertise first and foremost. If someone drops in - cool. 3. Just not interested in watching the show + keeping track of chat + trying to absorb what interesting things you're saying. The recap fills that niche for me. 4. I wish I had the time to watch all this stuff but life has other ideas :/ 5. ⬆ 6. My thoughts on this are that when you have a few people talking over mics, doing visual production as well is going to be clunky, awkward and interrupts the flow of interesting discussion. To diversify a little, my suggestion would be to make this a podcast format. It might make it a bit less - 'intense' maybe? - for your guests too. No one wants to look at a bunch of little pictures of people with headphones on sitting at their computers anyway. Then just publish the audio on YT with a static image for posterity. 7/8. Recaps are for spoiler talk, period. No one's tuning in to one of your marathon streams if they haven't seen the episode yet, and nothing interesting can be discussed without spoilers. Do a mini-review of just the *episode* as a piece of entertainment, if you want. A 5-6 minute, scripted review would probably be good for ordering your thoughts for the recap and no doubt great for views. 9. You pay for Amazon Prime - you bought the product, It's yours. What you do is NOT for Amazon and anyone with a brain knows that Bezos wouldn't piss on you if you were on fire. You make videos for US and if you can source another stream of income, however small, from related services, that is totally reasonable and I encourage you to do so. There we are - nice and short, like I said ^_^

Well, here are some thoughts of mine after the first impressions how you (or we) dealt with that. a) For me and others it would be preferable if you would launch the recap live stream not that early in the morning, but in the evening (German time zone), like 8 or 9pm on Fridays. You don't need to have a "speed run" with other creators. So everyone would have the chance to watch it at their deliberation and join the discussion afterwards. b) If you're planning another watch party, please do it on Twitch! I was permanently struggling to get back in synch which was really distracting to me. And I'm not the only one from what I've seen in the chat. c) If you get a fellow creator to join the recaps it would be a nice addition, but you're doing on your own just fine. A "nice to have" but it's not necessary. Stick to a certain time frame and if someone's got the time, good, and if not, don't change your schedule for that. d) A panel as you suggested as a "roundtable" should be a live stream for sure. It should be open for us to interact with you and your guests. Otherwise it'd be a little boring to only watch people discussing with each other without the means of joining it. e) Spoilers. Everyone who joins your reacaps should be aware that we're talking about the content we've already seen. If someone hasn't watched it yet, they might be warned in the beginning that we're talking about it. It would be silly to put a spoiler warning to each and every scene we're talking about. Same goes for quotes from the Silmarillion or other writings. The only occasion where a spoiler warning is need is when you've got information about _future_ events of the show which haven't been on the screen yet. Hopefully my considerations are helpful to you!

I’ve got thoughts on two questions for now: 7) Spoiler free reviews, whether standalone or at the beginning of longer reviews, would be nice. I’m still deciding whether or not I’ll be watching the show, and I think hearing your opinion on the quality (or lack thereof) would be very helpful. 9) I don’t mind you making money off of Amazon. Like you said, it’s not like you’re being paid for reviews themselves. That being said, I could also see it creating a headache for you, in that people might see it and jump to the conclusion that you’re “shilling” or something. Of course, with how divisive the subject or this show has been, I feel like somebody will get angry no matter what you think, say or do…so that’s gotta be fun to navigate…

Spoiler free reviews might be interesting for the first few episodes to help people who are wondering if they would like to give the show a try. Beyond the initial episodes or maybe the first episode of each new season, I don't personally see the value in them. How many people will want to see spoiler free reviews of episode 27 of a 50 episode series? If they are planning to watch those episodes anyway, then spoiler free is less useful. If they don't plan to watch it but want to have a summary then they will want spoilers. And if they are watching it then full analysis videos seem most likely to appeal. At least, those are my assumptions... EDIT: As a compromise, a 30-60 second spoiler free review at the start of the full episode analysis videos would seem reasonable to me, then give your spoiler warning before diving into the meat of the episode analysis.

Okay so what I want MOST is for you to SLEEP at some point in the next ten weeks ;) I may be getting a little confused, post work brain is frazzled. So first one personal note-- watch parties are a lot of fun for people but I personally don't participate in them a lot 'cause I kinda like to watch at my own pace/ for someone who doesn't have kids I seem to have to stop things waaay too much XD. A stream-only live reaction/exclusive content COULD feel like a benefit thing. And personally I'd say since that's a reaction have those be spoiler, than if you do a recap on the channel/that's archived have that one be non-spoiler 'cause a new viewer who might be curious about the series/behind for whatever reason that might encourage them to stick around. I know I'm always weary to watch a lot of someone's work until I know at least some of their stuff is spoiler free 'cause I'm always behind. as far as "spoilers" this is a tricky one. I'd say since a lot is up in the air about the time period, consider it a spoiler maybe not if it's backstory or information a more casual viewer/reader might be aware of from what we know of history from the third age stuff, but if it pertains directly to the plot/clear foreshadowing of something that's going to happen in the /series only/ as I get the feeling the show will be a bit of a different creature. Um YES. Affiliate link. It's not going to hurt your content and could be a little perk. Round table is fun. Could be another exclusive, but I'd say on that whatever format is going to be the least time commitment from you and others as creators/fans are probably going to be REALLY busy with all the stuff coming out.

Yes I prefer scripted videos as well and think that is what I'm best at, but sadly writing a long video takes a ton of time and free style speed things up by factor 10 to 20. So when a video has the requirement to be produced really fast, I have to go with the free styling. In addition Who is Galadriel is scripted and currently sits on 2,6k views, which makes me quite sad. Could have just streamed and would have gotten more views with less effort 😢 KZfaq really hates me at times. Had really high hopes for it.

imo a recap is a bit superfluous? .. i think you may be creating extra workload for yourself. unless i don't understand the goal of it? 🤔 if it's a "first impressions" kind of thing, then i get it. i suppose, you need to decide whether you want this first thing to be a pure expression of your own thoughts after the episode (then it can be a short thing right after), or if you want to have a discussion first thing, with guests or chat; then you have to give it some time

I think they communicated a diverse cast really early, but imo that is not the problem, because it's as far as i can tell not a topic of the show, it's just their casting approach (colour blind casting). I can see that people don't like it, but having red a lot of interviews, articles and rumours over the last 2 years, I have to admit they were pretty open about what they were doing for quite some time. I mean the show is not out yet and we have a pretty good idea of what the changes will be. They would have lied if they did not say that, the first episode comes out and people see it's not like they told before, but that is not the case.

@@ThePhilosophersGames the lore in terms of elves being fair skin and long blond hair. They made the elves black. They cant say we keeped the lore but thier actions show other wise. Thats the lie. Even dwarf wimen should have beards. Been better if amazon said we did our own show and changed the lore.

But they said early that they changed things. And with colour blind casting, only the actors is e.g. black, but he is not different inside world. (Tar-)Míriel according to the interview with the actors is still the 1st cousin of Pharazôn, though she does not look like it.

I would say cover it and give your overall analysis after watching the show. Then maybe do a "how I would have done the show" reaction. Please just have a more mature and constructive analysis which I'm sure you'll do. Don't be an echo chamber for rage hate.

Monetize the hell out of your streams and uploads, whatever you decide to do. I don't plan on watching this series as it looks to be an abomination of Tolkien's works and the lore. And of course all the woke messaging etc.. I would be interested, however, in a recap stream (with or without guests) and also a breakdown video of the episodes. Love your channel and content. Thanks for all of your hard work! 🙏🍻

No need to be spoiler-free imo. Whoever is interested enough to follow your content will have watched the show anyway.

A watch party may get copyright by amazon, so be carefull there You should probably combine recap with review, feel free to smash those spoilers, nothing of value will be lost and if someone will want to be spoiler free they can watch this abomination before watching the review, The most important thing, be honest, don't pander to any side, give your opinion, be good, be bad, be crap, some will agree some will not, speak from the heart and it will be great and for the love of god never shill for amazon

Maybe you try to do too much content here. Ask yourself what is the most important. For me the recap stream and deep analysis I will look for.

I'm not watching this farce, and I won't be watching your videos on them UNLESS you discuss the differences between that and Tolkien. Putting Tolkien's name on a turd doesn't make it smell good.
