I Need Your Help. What Do You Like/Dislike About Ordering Wine While Dining Out

In this video I solicit some help/feedback about what you like or dislike about ordering wine at restaurants. I am starting a series to demystify the process and make it easier for you.

My wife and I typically order by the bottle. Given the crazy markup on most wine, I particularly enjoy looking for the ‘hole in the wine list’. For example I can usually find a good quality barbera or rosso di Montepulciano for a great price relative to more popular varietals. I also like that I’m offered a chance to smell the wine first. I usually skip the tasting part of the dance because I really just want to smell if I have a corked bottle. The only negative I can see is that, when in a group, I feel elitist when doing the swirl and sniff. But to be fair that’s a self inflicted emotion.

Thanks for all of the thoughts Tony (and stop giving away my secrets for attacking a wine list in an Italian restaurant)! Barbera and Rosso di Montalcino and such great options. I think we should embrace the tasting process but not make it too formal. That video is coming up very soon. Thanks for watching and commenting.

As a wine reviewer myself, I can tell you that I do not go to restaurants that have a glamorous wine menu, and the decent restaurants I do go to usually have the same old junk wines available by glass. If you want a real wine you have to order it by the bottle which is priced crazily. If decent restaurants would open the good stuff by the glass that would be nice.

Thanks for all of the thoughts. Having more by the glass options would be a great start as I agree that the usual suspects show up too much.
