Higher likelihood of troll groups to pop up when the survey is being posted by a corporation or company related to anime. Those tend to be a mixed bag. Hopefully here people will heed Joey's advice on "don't troll" and this should be a pretty accurate survey.

That was a lot harder than I thought it would be. I had trouble with both best and worst, since I've watched a lot.(I had to go to MAL to see what I've watched) I also wasn't sure if OVAs were included, so I just went with full series and movies. It might have been interesting to see what the answers would be between anime and manga, and not just be focused on anime. Best of luck with the poll. I hope not to many trolls came out.😁

Thankfully this is in our personal opinion and not what we think is the overall accepted answer. I'd like to do a survey where it breaks down best via genre and decade. it requires a valid gmail address and there is a captcha at the end, will prob stop most botting. There are also other ways to detect botting on surveys like this and exclude those from the statistics (another youtuber did this when collecting stats)

I feel like people have a hard time giving a single answer for their best and worst animes. If you had them give their top 5 and worst 5, and then scraped those answers for shared responses, you'd have a real ranked-choice answer. I did the best I could to narrow mine down, but I still had to use the "Other" selection a lot.

best way to go about it is think of that one series or "movie" that inspired you the most. I'm not in tune with todays anime culture as I grew up in the era of setting my VCR timer to record the late night screenings of anime then hope in the morning it had recorded correctly. These days you lot have it on demand across streaming services.

I may be the only one to put Elfen Lied as underrated. It seems mostly forgotten now and not all of it has aged well, but I have yet to find and opening and OST that moves me the same way.

I realize I never said what mine was. Assassination Classroom. Pretty sure the reason it's not super well known is because it lacked advertising. Phenomenal writing skill. I'd say it's at least as good as Avatar: The Last Airbender.

For underrated I put an anime that I think is good and important, but that has a painfully low MAL rating. I looked up shows like the aforementioned Elfen Lied and Tegamibachi, but they still had pretty good scores by the people who watched it, i.e. 7.47 and 7.61 respectively. Maybe you could say that Tegamibachi is underwatched or Elfen Lied is mostly forgotten? Because underrated to me implies that people don't appreciate something as much as its quality would imply.

Personally I think it's very hard for me to pick one best anime, I'd like to pick maybe like 5-10 and include multiple genres in there as well to lessen the inevitable dominance of shounen anime.

Actually it's the overrated section that will be filled with shonen. Of course shonen IS overrated a lot of the time, but everyone already knows that. I'm thinking underrated will be more filled with the pseudo niche shows that intermediate anime consumers enjoy. Stuff that's really popular in anime communities, but isn't popular the same way your Naruto's and demon slayers are.

Idk, I guess I’m a bit complicated but here’s an example of what I mean : imho the best of all time (for me) is Eva, however, my most favorite is Steins; Gate.

For me the toughest question was for the worst anime. I think you should add a question saying, "What is your favorite anime?" because for the best anime I had to think objectively and didn't choose my favorite. A more subjective question would make it more interesting, but maybe for next time

Yeah I watched anime as a kid in the 80s (it was still rare but we got it in the US back then) and I didn't know it was called 'anime' either, I just knew it looked a lot different from the other cartoons I saw. It was the eyes lol. I don't know which one I saw first, but it was either Unico or Voltron. My aunt recorded the Unico movies for me since I love anything unicorn related since I was a baby.

I'm not a serious anime fan, but having been watching Japanese animation most all my life. I'm hella old so growing up, I enjoyed old stuff like speed racer, kimba the white lion and just bits of anime here and there from friends recommendations (cowboy bebop, hikaru nogo, death note, etc...) . I'd like to know more about anime history from at least the 60s onward. I'm, not aware of older than the 1960s but would like to learn more.

There's not much to say, but some early shorts from Yasuji Murata are worth seeking out. You can find a lot of them on KZfaq, as well as things like Momotaro's Divine Sea Sailors (the first anime film) and other early films like Panda and the Magic Serpent (Anzu and Shiozaki is better, though)

Might I suggest letting people choose a top 3 or 5 for best (and the others)? You might get more accurate data that way, since (for example) many people have FMA:B in their top 5 but not no. 1, and this is relevant info w/respect to which anime is the best

Bro i absolutely cannot answer any of the questions 😭 not because i don't want to, but i can't figure out my own perception of this, i could have maybe 5 years ago, but I've recently gone through stuff that has completely mindfucked my perception of my likes and dislikes and of what everything is, and also have started experiencing crazy impossible but deeply meaningful things in life including when i watch anime. Because of this its as though almost all the anime I've watched the last 4 years hold infinite depth and meaning to me deep in my soul.

Interesting questions. I really liked it, though I will consume stories however I can get them, and especially whenever they're done well. Medium matters less to me than the execution within the chosen medium. I wish the US would get a blu ray release of Devilman Crybaby as well as English translations of the Cat Planet Cuties manga and light novels, or Asobi ni Ikuyo as I believe it's called. Just completed it but there’s a few things I’d like to point out. I wouldn’t go and call myself a seasoned anime fan, but I’ve been watching anime for over a decade, and I’m in my early twenties. It’s very hard to pick one single BEST ANIME OF ALL TIME, especially if I have to go through all the stuffs I liked. Also, I know it’ll be extremely time consuming, especially if this is meant to be completed by fans all over the world, but maybe giving us the possibility to explain our choice would be helpful. Not just pick one that you like but also why did you choose this and what makes an anime more appealing to more people, not just what’s the most popular one. And maybe if you were to ask people to develop their thought process, it’d also be easier to filter out the trolls if you can tell how serious they are, but that’s a very big “maybe” 🤷🏻‍♀️

When answering this survey, i realized that while I thought I was more prolific in watching anime, there's no way I've watched 500 shows. Wonder how many people out there have legit watched that many, cause I started as a kid, and unless they watch a LOT of anime movies, and basically consume anime like reviewers do, most people probably aren't even at 200 (I'm certain I've at least gone above that). Also I chose to interpret most underrated show as "shows I think deserve to be seen by a bigger audience" rather than "i think too many people rate this low" because that's how we use overrated/underrated, but if there was more clarity on that (which show you think is a hidden gem/normie show, which show you think is overhyped/underappreciated) that might help, idk i prob would still pick the show I chose.

You're right, and I probably put myself a tier too high. I interpreted the underrated category the same as you though. I was less worried about the MAL score and more worried whether anybody has seen my pick.

One piece is 1000+ episodes. 1 cour of a series is 12 episodes. Every single person who has seen tbe entirety of one piece cpuld have instead watched almost 100 1 season shows.

I've started in 2018 and Watch a season every week on average. I watch 1 episode every night, sometimes 2. This including movies every fortnight. During my free time in the day I also read manga. About 100 chapters a week. This means that with all media I've gone through that many shows but without manga probably around 300 in 4 years. Despite this there is still so much I've yet to read and watch. I also saw the most underrated one as a show I believe needs to be seen by more people, which was difficult.
