Recommendation from a professional mother of two. I'm guessing you wouldn't have time to fly in grandparents to watch the baby. So I would say take Candice and the baby to Miami for two nights. I'd stay at the Fontainebleau or the St. Regis. YOU do the packing for the trip (Candice can buy anything else she needs at the shops) and plan everything. You send flowers to her work that morning with a note letting her know that you want to meet her and the baby at a certain time then take her to the airport (if you want you can give her an hour to pack anything extra you might have forgotten--but you should be completely packed). Have the hotel prepare the room with a birthday surprise for Candice. The entire weekend you get up with the baby, feed the baby, put the baby to bed, bathe her etc. When the baby needs a nap you go up to the room and Candice gets to stay by the pool, etc. Also, importantly, no work for the entire trip. Get a babysitter (recommended by the hotel) for the baby for when you both go out to dinner. After the trip is over you make an album with pictures of your beautiful two girls (and a few of you as well).

I am a professor and you inspired me to make videos for my students on the statistics we use in class. It is a great way to connect with them and make the material more accessible. +rrijke Hi Rrijke. Thanks for your comment. I just polled my students and about 75% said they were helpful or very helpful. The other 25% didn't watch them. I'm planning on including some more techniques for bivariate and multivariate statistics. They are relatively amateurish (and they take a ridiculous amount of time for me to make and edit) but hopefully they will help my students that can't make it to office hours!

you could act super chill about it, like you've almost forgotten, then just as she goes to do something really mundane like give the baby some food, hand her a single balloon with a key on the end of the string, and the key unlocks a room (a spare room, or your office or something idk) and in there are a bunch of presents and decorations and cake and all that shit

Hey Casey. Here are a couple things you can do with Candice on her birthday. Probably make it extra special this time. Instead of getting her something for her birthday(like a watch or something). Do something with her. Surprise her. Plan a surprise family vacation to Cape Town (what a better place to feel great than a place that feels like home). Bring along Francine and Owen. Put work aside for a moment and spend good quality family time with them. Go on adventures, relax, have fun and make good memories together. Material items wear out and will be replaced sooner or later. While, precious moments, good memories and pleasant experiences will last a lifetime :) You can replace those moments and you can replace family. So go and enjoy yourselves! You guys deserve it :D

Get her some public art. You'll need two artists. Graffiti and if NOT Tom Sachs, get Stefan Sagmeister. tell them to make sure the canvas is "Nighttime in NYC" First, have her walk by the graffiti, look at it, then go to dinner. then, loop back, and reveal the other piece after delicious food.

There is no better gift than your time and attention. Write her a card saying that you give her 24hours uninterrupted time together. In that time you can do what ever she wants, go out to dinner, go for a walk, anything really. The important thing is she has your full attention.

One of the best presents I gave my wife was a completely unplanned road trip. Here's what I suggest... line up a babysitter for a 3-day weekend, pack casual clothes, gas up your car, and then once you're in the car, decide what direction to drive. And just do fun, different stuff. We had a few rules... 1) only 1 photo per day; 2) no texting; 3) no phone calls. Be in the moment. We did this 2 summers ago and it was great - camped in the Smokeys, surprised friends in Chapel Hill and Tallahassee, hiked, at at sleazy restaurants, met cool people, stayed at 5 star hotel, 2 star hotel, rode a tractor, just fun crazy shit.

You can make her a porch swing for the tree in the back yard at the New London house. She is always sitting out there with Francine. It's DIY so it's sweet, but it would also be functional. I have a how to video showing how to make one on my channel (plus free templates on my website), if you want to go that route. Or, you could make a growth chart ruler. That way it's something you've made that can be put on the wall to track Francine's height as she grows (I also have a video showing that process as well). Either way, don't go with nothing. : )

Hey Casey, I know this was a long time ago, but I think next year you should get her a Full Keyboard. Not a grand piano, just a cheap full piano. I say a keyboard because a piano only has 88 keys, but we have never stopped making music, and we won't. The keyboard represents your love for Candice never diminishing and it won't diminish ever. Personally, I think the best gift is an experience, if she owns a lot of 'things' another thing won't hold any value. 1. Hire a babysitter for the night 2. Book a table at her favourite restaurant (even if her favourite place is KFC or something and you don't have to book just go where she really loves) 3. On the day of her birthday (i'm assuming you'll be at work during the day) you should leave a camera with a short video of you explaining what the plan is and where she needs to meet you - somewhere she will definitely see the camera - maybe leave a note on her desk or something at work with *watch me* 4. Go to her favourite clothing store and get them to help you pick out an outfit and leave it at home for her 5. Meet her at the place you know she likes, and put your phones/cameras away and just have a nice meal together with no interruptions (other then checking on francine obviously) It would take effort but if she doesn't really want 'anything' I think just a night where you can enjoy being alone together would be a really special memory :)

Get her what you do best. Stories, kind of a scavenger hunt where every piece you collect has a special meaning of your history together, a story that you build with just pieces of paper, or a meal or a small present ever an A/C, where on the way she remembers why she is so special to you and bring deep emotion into what your relationship has been in bad an good moments. Make her laugh maker her cry and dont film it or keep it to yourself so its a long private memory of a really special day.

Give her a day of adrenalin: Start by screaming at her to wake her up. She will be really pissed and that is the perfect base for everything that comes after because after such a move she will love everything you do. So next you will serve her breakfast whatever she loves, you are the expert. Then you continue with some adrenalin sport like bungee jumping or whatever is around the city. After this activity she will be high of adrenalin so just give her a break. Take her to a streetfood thing for lunch and talk with her about how crazy your journey was, the last X years you spend together, collect some romantical memories and talk with her about it. After that you need to need to get her on high adrenalin again, so go to a racing track where you can sit next to a pro how will do some crazy donuts or high speed breaks and so on. Bam, adrenalin again. And in the end of the day you just chill together as a family on the couch order some pizza and watch some netflix or her favourite movie. Perfect harmony of adrenalin and romance.

First of all my wife gets a birthday week. She is too important to be fully recognized in one day. I try and purchase her a gift for each day of her week. Nothing huge but a little something. As for gifts, I try to find things to solve those little problems she has in life. Example... She likes to know what time it is at all time, but she can't see the clock without her contacts when she goes to bed. I bought her a clock that projects the time on the ceiling in large numbers. She doesn't know how she ever lived without it. It not a huge gift, but it has a bigger impact on her life than an expensive piece of jewelry in the drawer. Not only does it fix her daily frustrations it proves to her that you're listening and have put some thought into her gift. Not really a gift idea, but for me it's been a very successful thought process.

You should surprise her with a meet-up at a swanky location centred around meeting her, and ask everyone to bring a gift, so she feels showered with love, gifts, attention, and see's how much people enjoy seeing her in the vlogs... essentially crowd source it. And you won't know what gifts people will bring, so it's still guaranteed to be a surprise. You should probably provide cake for everyone that comes :)

@caseyneistat Re Candices Birthday: A present/experience for each one of her senses... Sight, Smell, Touch, Sound and Taste. This went down really well with my wife.. In the day I took her to an art gallery and tall skyscraper with a view over London whilst enjoying a glass of champagne, bought her flowers and perfume, took her chocolate and wine tasting and finished the evening by going to restaurant followed a John Legand concert!

Casey if you're thinking about selling the Connecticut house and and moving somewhere better for bringing up Francine, then maybe you could book a trip out of town for a few days in a nice hotel, buy Candice a few small presents like new clothes, shoes etc, give them to her gradually throughout the trip, not all at once, then ask her how she would feel about buying a place somewhere near there to bring up Francine :) just a suggestion, thumbs up so Casey has more chance of seeing

Then organise some of her family members to surprise her on the boat and have a good time cruising around the area with a private band or DJ :)! something you will never forget, cheaper than helicopter joyride maybe and your gaining a better view of new york/manhattan than being on land ;)

Can you solve a problem for her that will make her life better or easier or more enjoyable for the rest of the year? She wishes she had more sleep... is there a way you can get her an extra hour in the morning? Something that will help her streamline her morning routine so she can spend more time in bed and less time getting ready? Or maybe an Uber ride to work every morning for the year to make getting to work faster?

Or I just honestly don't need more stuff for the sake of having stuff. So, to expand on my comment above, instead of stuff for the sake of stuff, focus on an experiential gift. And I don't mean a one-off, flashy demonstration that anyone could do for anyone else given the right resources... Do something that shows you really know and get *her*. That you're paying attention to her needs and frustrations, and that you're there to support her and make her life better. Does she wish she could spend more time with her parents, or Francine? Make that happen. Maybe her favorite place for lunch is too far for her to get it every day. Have a courier bring it to her every Friday. Does she miss a best friend from Texas? Fly them in to hand deliver a case of RC Cola and Moon Pies. These things might seem mundane, but if they're important enough to her it will mean more than champagne and candles and helicopter rides. Anything that says "I know you better than anyone else, and I want you to enjoy your life as much as you make me enjoy mine".

Unsure of budget. Maybe hire a chef for a week and buy her some super soft and amazing blanket,,pjs and someone to teach her something she has always wished to learn...ps...Ive owned pricy blankets but the best blankets ever are the shabby chic ones at Target, The best gift you can give someone is quality time. Also..you could (if you have a bathroom window) or your bedroom you could put gardenia or lavender plants outside of her windows .tricky with winter coming up but I have faith in you. :) Happy Early Birthday !!!!!

Here's an idea: You can leave small pieces of paper around the house, and the paper can contain quotes, memories, flowers, and just stuff you want to say to her. You can also attach candy on them so its like a reward for finding your notes. The last note can be a gift like idk a dinner at a restaurant or some shit.
