I love that the movie doesn't tell you what Bitterbuck and Del did, and I love that the novel DOES tell you. Bitterbuck got in a drunken argument with a guy over a pair of boots, and in his anger he crushed the guy's head with a cement block; that might be considered manslaughter in most places, since it wasn't premeditated, and if he hadn't been Cherokee he almost certainly wouldn't have been sentenced to death. What Del did was so much worse: he raped and killed a young girl and set her body on fire to try and get rid of the evidence, but the fire spread and killed 6 other people, including two children. And then he gets burned alive during his execution. Yet somehow King still makes you feel sorry for the guy, though.

Fun fact: Michael Clarke Duncan got this role after Bruce Willis recommended him to the studio for it, as they had just worked together on Armageddon. As it became his claim to fame, Duncan would often joke in interviews that he owed Willis 10% of everything he earned.

18:45 You probably wouldn't want to get fired in that era, actually. This is set during the Great Depression. Thousands upon thousands lost everything when the stock market crashed. whole families were living on the streets or in tents in the center of cities. people were starving to death. Freezing to death during the winter because they couldn't afford heating. Men were lining up at factories and the like for hard labor jobs hoping to be picked for the day to work and most places to work couldn't afford to hire more than a few of them per day. Him getting fired could get him and his whole family homeless overnight. It's the same reason John didn't want them to let him go. Apart from the fact that he was tired of this life and all the pain he felt in the world, if they had let him go they would be fired at the very least, jailed at the worst. Either way their families would suffer horribly. John knew that and so did they.

Here’s some on set trivia for you… When Dell put Mr. Jingles on Tom Hank’s shoulder, he carried it to John. Then Tom wipes his shoulder off so that his uniform would look perfect for Dell’s execution. The truth is the mouse 🐁 pooped on Tom’s shoulder, so that was unscripted and Tom continued like the great actor he is. Also… Michael Clarke Duncan felt uncomfortable during rehearsals about having to grab Tom Hanks’ “private parts.” Also, he was afraid he would hurt Tom. So Tom looked on the set and found an empty water bottle, filled it about 2/3’s full and put it in his pants. That way he would have something he can grab on to and Michael wouldn’t hurt Tom.

They used camera effects and props so it would appear Duncan was much taller than everyone else around him. That's one of the reasons you don't really see a wide shot when the actors are together in a scene. In fact, David Morse (Brutal) and Duncan were roughly the same height. The illusion worked perfectly.

I LOVE the novel - it's a serial novel in 6 parts that were released once a month over 6 months. That's why the movie is kind of "spread out," I guess. Part 1 is called "Two Dead Girls," part 2 is "The Mouse on the Mile," part 3 is "Coffey's Hands," part 4 is "The Bad Death of Eduard Delacroix," part 5 is "Night Journey," and part 6 is "Coffey on the Mile." The novel makes it VERY, VERY clear how racist this society was in general and how that affected not only Coffey but other people convicted of murder, too. It says straight up that most of the prisoners Paul was in charge of were black and that people of color (Bitterbuck, Coffey) and "foreigners" (Del) who were convicted of murder were much more likely to get sentenced to death compared to white people convicted of murder. Even Wild Bill had more opportunities to appeal compared to the other death row prisoners. I have no idea why some viewers think race/racism wasn't a major theme in the movie; it would've been stupid to make a movie set in this time and place and pretend racism and xenophobia didn't have a big impact on the story. Stephen King tells the reader at the end of part 1 that Coffey's execution was the last one Paul took part in, and he makes it clear that no one on death row was ever saved at the very last minute, so the reader knows early on that Coffey will be killed. I think that works really well in the novel; the reader isn't reading the last part thinking Coffey might be saved at the last minute, they're just depressed and resigned to the fact that Coffey never stood a chance in Alabama in 1935 despite everything he did to save others. As Paul narrates the execution, he states when and how each person there died, which is depressing (for example, Dean was stabbed in the neck and killed by a prisoner just 3 months later). And the last chapter starts with the heartbreaking story of how Paul's wife died in a major bus crash that killed every passenger except for two, one of whom was Paul. Paul wasn't even seriously injured, but he had to watch his wife die an absolutely horrific death. It really brings home how this "gift" of life he's been given is really a curse. I like that in the movie the viewer doesn't know what will happen to Coffey, though. That works better for this format, I think.

1. Before this is over YOU WILL CRY😭 2. Dabbs Greer/old Paul was ill during production, so his part was done later. He also played Reverend Alden on "Little House on the Prairie". 3. Hammersmith was not a good lawyer. (most likely a racial thing. It was 1935 South.) 4. In the book King briefly covers why the Chief and Del are on death row. 5. This movie was nominated for Best Supporting Actor (MCD) and Best Cast but unfortunately neither won. 6. Players in other King adaptations: Jeffery DeMunn: Shawshank Redemption, The Mist, Storm of the Century and William Sadler: Shawshank Redemption, The Mist. David Morse: The Langoliers. Patricia Clarkson played Margarat White in King's remake of Carrie". Needless to say, it was a much different part.

In the books the nurse at the retirement home was evil like Percy. Not nice like in the movie but there wasn't enough time to flush out that story with as long as the run time was so they simplified it. The book laughs about how today you take 2 pills and are fine but back then you had to just piss out an infection. The rehearsal stand in is Tut Tut. in the books he runs the snack cart that comes through the green mile. If i remember that is where they get the stuff for the mouse's home. Wetting the sponge directs the electricity down to the brain. If it is dry it will try to spread through the body meaning long painful death.
