This book was once my homeschool go-to resource. But lately I've made a departure from the methodology and resources recommended in the book. I'm sharing why's behind this big decision.

This is very helpful. Getting the well trained mind was my first step into homeschooling too. I started reading, and I started getting some of the resources. But I didn’t get very far into the book when I hit the history section, and I felt that lack your talking about in regards to biblical worldview. I didn’t know what kind of homeschooling I wanted to do, but I felt like this was not the person I wanted to model behind, because she didn’t prioritize highly enough what I wanted to. If YOUR homeschool doesn’t prioritize YOUR priorities, then why are you even homeschooling? Right?!? I love that you are adding more apologetics and adding more solidly Christian materials over ambiguous. Discipling our children as parents is our God- given responsibility, and no one can do it for us!!

Second gen homeschool mom too :) I love your videos, you're so real! I was classically homeschooled but I'm choosing different for my 5. What a ride this is!

Thanks for commenting! How fun to meet another second gen hs mom! I wasn't classically homeschooled but really wanted to try it with my kids. It was too overwhelming and we really felt burnt out. I enjoy being more eclectic now and even using textbooks and workbooks. It has simplified and streamlined our day.

@@LexiHenegar I agree! My mom loosened up by me (#5). This is actually my first year homeschooling my kids because I reallllly resisted. But gosh I love having them here and we are just doing what we can. Workbooks for the win!!

Wow! This was perfect and so insightful for me. I have 2 young children but also struggle deeply with chronic illness, so time management is KEY. You made so many valid points. Also making that exchange for more time for Devotionals etc. vs spending so much time planning seems so well balanced. I would like to source from some good reading lists, etc. do I just find that on their website?

Much loved! I tried to chase the Charlotte Mason style for several years. It also seemed never ended trying to keep up with the way. At the beginning of this school year, I realized I had to give it up. I was turning to the CM style almost as an idol. And I also realized I needed to let it go to focus on God’s Word with my teaching. Another reason was that my oldest also loves the textbook style. Ha! He struggles with dysgraphia and so dictation has been impossible. And he needs more of a phonic approach and other resources to help him. After finally letting it go, it was liberating! But hard to do so at first. But I’m enjoying all of homeschooling with all of my children much better. We still use many CM ways, but also use many other ways too, as you said. Thanks so much for making this video!

This was super helpful!! I've recently just started reading The Well Trained Mind after an older mom gave it to me, and while I'm very impressed so far with the quality of what they no doubt learn, I'm just like you and prefer simple, independent, open and go, more textbook all-in-one style for many things and was already feeling overwhelmed at having to get 3-4 things for language arts (Spelling Workout, First Language Lessons, Writing with Ease, etc) rather than just one simple language arts book (now considering Language Lessons for a Living Education by Masterbooks, which is more all in one and already includes all of those) and just supplementing with a simple handwriting course on the side. I only have 4 kids so far, but have already figured out about myself I get overwhelmed VERY easily, and already have a very teacher intensive Pre-K/kindergarten program to use with my younger ones, so I know for my oldest (2nd grade), I need open and go workbook style. So refreshingly to hear your thoughts and how similar we are!! So freeing! And lastly, most importantly, JUST like you, my top priority is that my children's education be biblically based and centered around the Bible and worship of God as Creator. I kept getting the sense that while "Christian" overall, I didn't love the focus on Greek mythology, Shakespeare, Chaucer, etc when I would much rather be exposing my kids to stories & literature with more biblical roots. Of course I still want them to read lots of great classical literature, but I feel the emphasis on those types of secular authors is a little much, to the neglect of biblical thought. To be fair, I haven't gotten very far in The Well Trained Mind yet, so perhaps there is a lot of Christian content they recommend, but suffice it to say, it doesn't seem as biblically focused as I would like, also echoing what you said. I totally agree with you that many aspects of classical teaching are excellent, I do hope I continuing to read I can take what I need from the book without feeling bog down or guilted into following anything I don't feel jibes with my homeschool philosophy. Thank you for a great honest overview!!!

So I have come to this realization too. So I’m curious what you’ve come to use. We are trying to just follow the BYL curriculum with a few things added to simplify, but even with this sometimes I feel like I’d like a more open and go curriculum. The tell me exactly where and when to do everything is so appealing to me anymore 😊.

My kids are loving Thinkwell for math. We use Notgrass for history and BJU for science. I’m using Abeka for grammar. And we like Essentials in Writing. I try to use things that are simple. I like clear directions and I really like things that are written to the student and don’t require a lot of me.

I am just planning for my first year homeschooling. I am reading through the well trained mind and while I find it inspiring and idealistic, it seems so overwhelming and I would also prefer more open and go especially for science and history. What curriculums do you use and like?

Lots of workbooks in the Memoria Press Curriculum. My son loves workbooks too and we are really enjoying their Classical curriculum. How I wish we’d started this in preschool instead of middle school. It does take all day, but my son enjoys that too.
