Fixing a $450 iPhone 11 Pro Max - Won't Turn On, Broken Screen -- I bought a broken iPhone 11 Pro Max off eBay to see if I could fix it. The phone doesn't do anything when I plug in the charge cable or plug it into a computer. It has a cracked screen but no other noticeable damage. So of course I had to open it up and see what was going on inside. I checked the internal connections and battery voltage and everything seemed to be working fine. It also looked like no one had tried to "fix" it already which was good. I went ahead and replaced the screen since that needed to be done anyway but had no expectation that the phone would work after that... But sometimes I even surprise myself and that seemed to be the only thing wrong!

About This Video: I bought an iPhone 11 Pro Max that had a broken screen and wouldn't turn on. I tried to charge it and connected it to my computer but neither did anything. Then I opened it up to see what was going on inside but everything looked like it was supposed to. Usually that's a good thing but not necessarily when you're trying to diagnose a problem. After checking internal connections I decided to replace the screen next since it needed to be done anyway. After that I tested it again and the phone started charging! Not sure if this is a common problem or not but at least the iPhone is fixed.

Humble pov: If you are taking the phone repair route, repair androids because there are WAY too much Iphone/IOS repair channels here on YT. You can throw even tablets and weird tech stuff in there. Also, try a wide range of brands. Not only Mac/Samsung. :D

Tronics, Ive seen bad screens causing iPhones not to turn on a good few times. Happens because the screen is heavily damaged and shorting one of the data lines for the display. It makes the phone not see a display, and it refuses to turn on without one.

Yeah, that's exactly what I was thinking. It would make things just worse to push current into the screen if the lines are shorting. It's better if it refuses to turn on.

I fixed an SE with a screen chopped in half and with a new screen it worked fine. It also didn’t show up when plugged in to a computer.

This is nearly always the case. I have managed to fix so many iPhones with "broken motherboard" claim from the insurance company just by replacing the screen. It is quite funny actually. I like it. 😂

Great video! I have some experience with fixing the iPhone 11 series myself. Just a quick note, the “Important Display Message” coming up does not mean that the screen is not original, it will always show up even if it is a genuine Apple display since the screen is paired to the logic board (like the home button on older iPhones)

Also, the phone can simply BRICK itself after an IOS update as shown by Louis Rossmann. Don't buy Apple products.

@@cunnyman AFAIK only Apple with their products is using such dishonest practice. Personnally I went for open hardware : Pinephone, Librem5. You can fix them and you can use whatever free software you like and customize it.

@@cunnyman Umm... It's a phone. The chances are slim? I have had cases on phones and they'll be good quality, sturdy cases and I'll drop it two feet and something breaks. Maybe you should stop living in a fantasy world where phone screens can't break or any display on tech for that matter.

If you want to remove the original display notice, you need to transfer the eeprom from the old lcd to the new lcd. Microsoldering required.

I'm surprised you didn't plug it in with your USB power meter. I don't know the normal value for that model when charging but seeing if it was drawing current at all could indicate the issue before popping a new screen in

Great deal since only the screen was broke ! For the adhesive, you can use an XS Max adhesive without any issue but I'm surprised you haven't found or got one with the screen, good suppliers usually give em with it. The display message you can't go around even if you pull a screen from another one. The only way is to transfer old screen IC and solder it in place of the one on your new screen. You won't get the display message and it will be as if it never got changed.

I’ve done several iPhone repairs, it’s actually what my repair shop is centered around. I think you had two compounded issues going on. First that the screen was shot and wouldn’t display an image and that the battery was so dead and needed to charge. This explains why you didn’t see anything and why your computer didn’t recognize it either.

It is indeed quite common to see iPhones not turning on with cracked LCDs, I'd say 1 in maybe 10 broken phones that I repair behave like that. Not even gonna try to guess why and the physics behind it, but yeah that's just how it is sometimes.

gunnaralv Don’t know if this video is fake, but it’s a big red flag when there’s no iCloud on the phone. Who doesn’t put a password or Face ID on their iPhone. If whoever sold the iPhone couldn’t get it turn turn on before they sold it how did they turn their password off. You can take off the iCloud remotely so if there’s a password you can reset it and not face the iCloud lock, but the password would remain so you couldn’t just turn it on and go right to the home screen like he did. The reason I know even though the video was edited is, he was talking about resetting on iTunes while it was already in the settings menu showing he got in. The digital home button was on while he was in menu hence it was before he reset it. He also said while he was already in the menu with the digital home button on that he was going to reset it indicating he hadn’t already. Very lucky or very fake in my opinion.

I think that "Apple Technicians" have some sort of authorization when they repair Iphones so that part become "Geniue". Even when you take geniue screen from other iphone and put it you will get message. Also I remember once I have change a battery of IPhone 6, and that was the time when Apple put in IOS an option for checking battery health and disabling they stock bottleneck if your battery is bad. But when I change it, I got this is not geniue battery and Iphone couldn't messure my battery health and that option was dissabled. Apple will do anything to stop you repairing on your own

You need a special screen programmer which are about $120 off of aliexpress. This allows you to transfer the information from one screen to another ro authorise it. Not having a "genuine" display dosen't do too much but it disables True Tone which kinda sucks.

What capacity was this ? That price is good even after you bought the screen depending on capacity, I’d say. Also I think I’ve said it before but your repair videos are great. I get mentally/intellectually stimulated (eg makes me want to fix things!) and they’re great to watch and relax to during pandemic lockdown.

I'm wondering, how do you approach fixing a device like this where it's maybe your first time opening the device and working on it? Do you watch some content online to get some information or you just rely on your experience and go with it? Btw, nice repair! I was kinda confused that broken display would cause such a mess with the phone not even being recognized when plugged into a computer, but looks like someone already explained it in the comments.

Isn’t that lock from the previous owner’s apple id when you reset the phone? It will ask for a password when you reset it or erased back to factory settings from the settings menu.

Often you can get people to remoltley remove their iCloud account from the phone when you buy off of ebay as long as the person selling it is the actual owner of the device.

I bent my iPhone 6 a little and then dropped it. the slight bend in the phone (and it was slight) was just enough to cause the screen to shatter even though it was in a polyeuethane case and had a screen protector on it. the touch stopped working, activating itself in weird ways and I couldnt figure out how to turn it off. Eventually the battery ran flat enough for it to put itself into a safe mode where it did nothing. it basically did exactly what this iPhone did. I replaced the screen myself and i still have it as my work phone. I did bend it back before fitting the new screen.

In regards to the “important display message”. Apple now will show that message unless you get the screen replaced at Apple even if it’s a genuine display

That part with the true tone transfer was great since most persons don't even know when you don't have true tome on your iPhone the display screen was replaced and not the original so I heard

This issue occurs whenever you replace a screen on one of these phones. Genuine or not. If the screen isn’t calibrated or “paired” by Apple, you’re gonna get that.

Kevin Jemiolo Yes, but didn’t he do the transfer thing ? Anyways, the only thing you lose is TrueTone and that’s the first thing I turn off when setting up a new device. Definitely less strain on the eyes, but I want my displays to be accurate, no yellow.

Pomerleau Cédric you can still get True Tone, but unless it’s replaced by apple or and Apple authorized repair, it will always have that message. I know because I used to repair them.

Kevin Jemiolo Oh ok then. Well I guess it’s not that big of a deal. It doesn’t stop third party repairs and the user knows it’s not a fully legit repair. How many time did I saw people thinking our local repair shop was approved by Apple and other brands, while they did horrible jobs... The worst I’ve seen is a client getting charged for a repair while the iPhone came back in worst condition than before. Yes the screen was repaired, but the touch wasn’t working anymore.

Pomerleau Cédric yeah places especially in malls do a terrible job. There used to be a third party repair next to us, and they eventually got forced to move elsewhere in the mall. People would come in a lot complaining about poor quality, false touch, no multi-touch functions, blank displays, etc after third party repair. And in some instances...the third party repair costs more than at Apple! Crazy.
